Good free antivirus?

Anyone got any recommendations? There are loads out there, but its hard to tell which, if any, are decent.

AVG is about the best totally free there is in my opinion. But "A-squared" is very good also as it found some virus's on my computer that AVG missed...I actually use both now.

:D you guys already hit on both I was going to mention.
I use AVG and it works well. I've recently 'heard' that Avast is even better. But the statement was not backed up with any info as to why it was better. So, I would classify both as good and reliable.

Cheers guys.

I've heard good things about, and used in the past, AVG. I'll get him to load that up.

I know its a paid one, but how does Sophos stack up against the rest?

I've been using AdAware for a few years now, and it seems to do the business. Anyone have any suggestions for anti-adware programs that might be better?

I have Avast on some of the seven family computers I support, and AVG on the rest of them.

Mozilla Firefox with AdBlock Plus is on all of them.

The above programs are free and everything works well.

As I recall I switched my wife's laptop from Avast to AVG (maybe it was the other way) because she was complaining of slow boot up. We take that laptop out to the ranch then home again so sometimes it hasn't been online for a couple of weeks. When the virus scanner was way behind in its updates, it took a long time to download the update, install, and do some kind of preliminary scan, before the machine could be used. I never notice this on my own laptop which is running Avast, but this may be because it is used more frequently.

Aside from this slow bootup issue, I don't see any difference. I think both AVG and Avast are in the top group of free virus scanners.

I suspect the AdBlock Plus deters a lot of mischief because it intercepts requests to download popups etc, that otherwise would arrive along with what you intended to see.

With all of the trojans and malware stuff masquerading as free spyware...I think this is a case of buying your spyware stuff from REPUTABLE AND KNOWN COMPANIES...

Dang! Last week I was saying nice things about AVG. But now I have needed to request its daily upgrade manually for the last few days.

I also have free ZoneAlarm firewall on this home desktop. I think it quit recognizing AVG as a good guy and won't let it call home.

That's what Zone Alarm is supposed to do - it deflects unwanted inquiries from outside, and also is a gatekeeper preventing unwanted outbound communication. But occasionally it fails to recognize an upgraded version of an acceptable program until an upgraded ZoneAlarm is installed.

If I continue having problems I'll switch this PC to Avast.

ZoneAlarm stays. It is the surest insurance that this PC, which is left on 24/7 when I'm home, hasn't been made into a spambot.

Guys, can anyone give me a link to the free AVG version? I downloaded one but it looks like its only a free trail.

Cali, I used to use ZoneAlarm, but found it slowed my computer right down. I also got fed up with it blocking programs I wanted. Ended up uninstalling it.
