I"M GOING ORANGE on my horse farm....I think

I just bought a ten acre horse farm.I know nothing about horses, tractors or UTVs, but theproperty was ridiculously underpriced and I had to pull the trigger. Plan to get a tractor (the GL3240 looks intriguing) andprobably a RTV900. After a furious internet search, i think Kubota is the way to go. Am going to stop by the local dealernext Monday to do a test drive.

I'm not looking to use the RTV as a tractor, but am wondering if it might be able to pull a sand rake around a 90'X250' riding arenaon occasion? Also, does the touchy transmission takequite a while to get used to?Can anybody with horses verify thatthe 900 is quiet enough to motor around the stall aisles delivering hay and taking away manure?

The land is flat and anything over 25mph isn't needed. Guess I just am looking for some words of wisdom and a slight nudge in order to make the purchase. I own a company and don't have a whole lot of time during the day to shop other brands if Kubota is going to serve my needs.

Your worring about something you don't need to. Take that step, both on Tractor & the RTV.

Double Orange, uses both, and he has some horses on his farm. Give him a little while, he will show up on here and give you some stress relief. Your going to do great !!!! Shop no Further, Kubota will be there & serve all your needs !!!!!

Yes,Yes,Yes and Yes!

Nice combo: GL3240 and RTV.

The RTV is a WORK HORSE! The Grand L 3240 has excelent proportions. With the R-4's she's almost 70" wide at the rear, which equals great stability, and a good low COG!

Dogs have Masters!....Horses have Caretakers!.....

I'll send you some more info

Go Orange!!

Hey DoubleOrange, where are you from on the Eastern Shore. Anywhere near Hooper's Island?

I appreciate the kind words, felllas. I see that the Orange fraternity takes care of its own. Would it be a good idea to get the High Mount Air Intake? The grounds are high and dry, so can I assume that regular worksite tires are ok and i won't need turf tires? Are there any other considerations you can think of that might make sense- any other implements or additions that'll make farm life easier?

Concerning the tractor, the pastures are in pretty rough shape and i pretty much need to start from scratch. i think the previous owners were spreading ALL the horse manure of 25 horses, whether composted or fresh, over the pastures. Are there any specific implements (power rakes, etc.) that would work better than others to get the pastures green and healthy. any specific brands?

thanks for all the help. I own a plumbing company. if i can answer any plumbing questions let me know. LOL

You say your ground is high & dry. So that means dirt & dust !!! You asked about the High Rise Air Intake !!! IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA. You'll be doing the machine a big favor. For the air intake filters that come with the units from the factory, are set low, beind the cab, where a Vortex of dust stays & stirs constantly . You will be surpised upon how fast and much the filter gets in them. And the filters are not cheap by no means. I had no hours at all on mine, when I first checked it, and it was very dirty & dusty, and it was winter time here when I purchased mine. That's when I went instantly and purchased the High Air intake, installed it, and checked it the other day, almost nine months later, and the filters are just as clean as they were the day it was installed. It being high and out of the junk, the filters will last forever. As you know, you don't want your RTV sucking in dirt, dust, and dirty air ,for it's not good for the engine at all. ~~~~

Hi there
I still have trouble getting used to the way it stops.
Hard to get used too.I tried slow stop lever still hard to get used to.Hard to shift too unless you pull trans dump, which is on same side as shifter awkward to use sometimes.Diesel motor pretty loud but
probably wouldn't scare horses,The hi mount air cleaner works ok but when using tractor to load body
it gets in the way sometimes. Some people on the forem just runnin intake pipe up higher to get cleaner air.I think that's a good idea if loadin with tractor a lot. my 2 cents

How many hours do you personally have running the RTV. You should be getting used to the stopping effect. It will get where you can cushin this thing down like a Huey Helicopter. Just takes time !!!!!

After coming to a complete stop, hold down on your brake just for a moment, heard that helps on the shifting. Also, have you done your first service yet on your unit ? Might be, your idle might be set to high. If you bring your unit to the shop to get the service done, get 'em to check the rpm idle speed ....

What is your Total hrs on your RTV ? '

After I serviced mine, and went back with the Super UT tranny fluids & Kubota Filters, like Kubota recommends. Shifting became so much easier. [:S]

Two guns
I only have 35 hours on it so far.The idle seems to be fine.I have not changed the oils yet.MaybeI should try that. You put this rtv in reverse and try to go ahead and it won't come out of gear unless you pull unloader.Tuff when you are mixin and filling try back into a spot. The stoping is always an adventure too unless I really concentrate on it.I hada mule before
and that shifted hard too thought this would be a lot easier.I'll try fluids changes and see what happens!
Thanx for the help

Go ahead and put you another 15 -20 hrs or so on the machine. Change the fluids, and filter, be sure to use the Kubota Super Tranny fluid & filters. Stopping the unit will take some practice. but , in time, trust me, you will get as used to it as blinking your eyes.....

The shifting, Is never going to be as easy as your standard pick-up. For one thing, that's a lot of pressure and fluid moving in that transmission. But, it will ease up for sure. More break-in time will take care of alot of it. Being only 35 hrs, the machine is still really, really tight !!!! Now, when you have a big load, or have the unit on ground that is not level, or should I say, putting the drivetrain in a little bind while sitting still or changing directions., they all will be a little more harder to shift. But it will get better, your machine is still tight as heck !!!!

Hi Piranha 2, Consider getting a boomless sprayer for the RTV. I bought a Fimco 60 gallon 12 v tow behind with a boomless sprayer. The boomless sprayer is a real plus because you can go thru gates easily but still cover a lot of ground with its far reach. With that manure all out there, especially with all that hay seed, you will probably need to control weeds.I later up graded this sprayer with a gas motor and a pump from surplus centerbecause I sprayabout 200 acres.Using selective herbicides, you can have a beautiful pasture and kill those bad weeds with out affecting the good grass. It also has a hand wand that you can switch to usingthe y connection .I have a Restricted Use License so I use Grazon on these fields. These are easy to get.. you just have to spend about 2 hrs in a class given by the county agent. If you go this way , I can give more detailed info. A do all would also be nice to level out those piles. What I call a do all herehooks to the tractor pto for moving and turning then dragging what looks like a collection of grader blades and chains behind leveling clumps of manure or disced land .Looks real nice and smooth . The real ones won't bounce and do a good job . Good Luck , Bordercollie[&][&]

Bordercollie,

Looks like you have good taste in equipment. We also use the Fimco spray units out on the farms & plantation . They are great units & the Fimco company, will stand behind their equipment 100% .

We have 'em hooked up to the Honda Rubicons , and some trailers pulls also. Was thinking about hookin' one up next spring in the back of the RTV, doing the deer plots , and going to the remote sections and spray in comfort this coming up spring time .

Solitude, We have 2 old JD4020tractors among others on this farm, Sometimes to start them you have to rock the steering wheel to reduce the hydro pressure. Then they will crank right up, Just rock your wheel as you try to shift and see if that helps. It helps me. Also if the RTV doesn't want to go in one gear try another and then shift back into the one desired . Sometimes I have to do the Y pattern before getting her to slide in the right gear Good luck. Piranha 2, I own 9 1/2 acres and I run horses and goatson the property. As far as the noise that the machine make and spooking the horse it might make them look at first but once then figure it out they won't even pay any attention to you. Working the arena if you are gointo use a chain drag it will work slick shouldn't have a problem. . Sorry I couldn't reply eariler I was In the So Cal on the fires. Jon[H]
