Is your RTV covered?

Is your RTV covered byINSURANCE that is??? Is your RTV covered by insurance againsttheft and/or liability? You think you are huh? Are you sure about that? Got me to thinking after reading another post at a off-road riders site. A guys side-by-side ( and several dirt bikes) was stolenoff of a trailer at a locked storage area in his sub-division.End result, at this point in the story, the machine was not covered my insurance although the owner thought it was. All sorts of questions came to mind as I read the story: Can I cover my 'future' RTV under my homeowners insurance? Do I need to get a special rider on the policy to cover the RTV? What if it is registered in my state of Pennsylvania? When is it covered by insurance? Is it covered while 'off my property'? What insurance companies can be recommended? What does coverage cost? Of course, If everyone was honest and law abiding this issue would not be a concern.

Insurance varies greatly by state and type of policy.

In Pennsylvania (which is also where I live):

It used to be that you could cover it under your homeowners but that's no longer the case.

When PA established the law that ATV/UTV's need to be registered, they then became a titled vehicle and insurance companies treat it as such.

It's also a requirement (law) that you carry liability insurance on the RTV.

If it's solely for farm use, as I recall, you can get special exemptions.

Apparently, the forum search isn't working right we've discussed this a lot in the past. I'm working with Neil (Admin) to see what's up.

Until the search works, I don't have all the details so I'll go off the top of my head.

Progressive Insurance is the cheapest. I'd propose you get it through an independent agent as opposed to getting directly from Progressive. As I recall, there's 2 divisions within Progressive. One division works directly with the customers and I think this division is terrible. The other division only works with agents. The latter is a much better place to be.

In PA, liability requirements are something like 15/30 and if you only get that, it's cheap. I'm thinking $70 a year or so.

Personally, I carry collision and comp on mine and have the liability at 100/300 or 250/500 (I don't recall). I think my policy is around $200.

I pretty sure I'm covered when off my property but don't recall the specifics.

Keifer I have a seperate policy on my 1100 just like Bczoom. It costs $213 per year and is well worth it. I live in upstate N.Y.

Mine is covered by a separate policy here in Texas. I have coverage with State Farm, cause they have my house and cars. The coverage is for only for comprehensive (Fire, vandalism and theft),and not for liability and it only costs $76 a year. They tell me I'm covered for liability as long as I'm on my property, but at 25mph most people can get out of my way, so I'm not too worried. I thought that was very reasonable, since the comprehensive on my tandem axle trailer is $50 a year.

My insurance covers my 900 like it was a motorcycle. I have full coverage w/liability, comprehensive, etc. My 900 is licensed and I probably use it 50% on road. I believe the cost was like 135. per yr. American Family. When I first went to get coverage I called one of the companies that was advertised heavily on TV. I ordered a policy and when it arrived I found that the insurance did not cover my 900 when I used it on road. A couple of friends of mine had insured their 4 wheelers with the company and used their 4 wheelers on road (Licensed). After reading their policy they immediately cancelled and bought a different policy. I would recommend that everyone read their policy to make sure the insurance provides the coverage YOU need.
