JD 2040 - rear hydraulics not working

When I start the tractor, the rear hydraulics lift fine. In a short time it stops working and will not lift the bush hog. Then, later it will start working again. A mechanic friend thinks it is an O-ring in the hydraulic pump for the rear. Any ideas? Serial number is 375013.

If you raise the mower and then shut off the tractor, does the hitch drop right away? Do the hydraulics get hot? You could have blown orings in rockshaft control valve or steering valve. Also could have low presure from pump. Do you have a pressure gauge to check hydraulic pressure?

When I raise the mower and turn off the tractor, the hitch drops immediately. I am not noticing that the hydraulics are getting hot, but I will pay particular attention to that and post it. My mechanic friend can test the pressure and we will do that.

Hey everybody: I just wanted to add that the gears grind and have difficulty shifting also. This seems to worsen when the rear hydraulics won't lift. Could this be a problem in the transmission pump gears, similar to what member Bigtomm described in a thread in July regarding a 2040? Ideas?
