ok fellas, I bought a used 2005 rtv 900 at auction, all kinds of problems with this money pit and im trying to get her purring again as cheap as possible. I got it with a cracked head, replaced it and had a mechanic get her running. now I have massive rattling in the driveline. its a 1 piece driveshaft and completely worn out. I saw some nice links to fixes for a 2 piece shaft with u-joints, but I don't have u-joints on old shaft. I am trying to buy the replacement oem shafts and support bearing that attaches to frame, but I cant seem to find the serial number, as the data plate has been removed or fell off. the only serial number that I can see is 50958 written on the left frame rail under the dump bed and a serial number on the back of the cage reading 50589. can anyone help me with part numbers of assembly numbers or any info on this Kubota. any help to do this as cheap as possible would be great. thanks for any help.
 
Hi Jetwelder10. Welcome to the forum :) . I had an 05 and it had a 2 pc shaft with u joints and a carrier bearing in the center where the front and rear shaft meet at the frame. I replaced mine several times before I sold it. Member Mark Sibole has worked on his as well. Someone must have updated your RTV with the one piecer because the early ones were 2 pieces with a carrier bearing in the center from the factory. Many of us had tons of rattling issues with the 2 pc model . I have been very very happy with my one pc design on my 2011 RTV900 though.
I seem to recall that in order to update the RTV to the newer 1 pc design, some metal cutting must be done where the carrier bearing originally was. I'd make sure that yours would accept the old design with out getting into having to rebuild that part to hold the old style 2 pc components before I ordered the parts.
Does this one pc you have currently have rubber boots over the shaft ends? My new style has been great as far as holding up for the 2,900 hours I now have on it. If I remember correctly the old style last a fraction of those hours and it did rattle. Many nicknamed it the rattler. There are several threads on this forum about the old style and Mark has a picture of the shaft he redid with aftermarket joints. I will see if I can find a thread for you to view or you can do a search at the top of this forum. If you are pretty sure it is an 05 or in that range, then the parts men at Messicks equipment can help you figure it out and they are a sponsor here. You can also go to their web site , enter your address and view a parts diagram of the RTV and since the shafts are the same on the early models you should be able to get a parts number there. Thanks for replying bordercollie, yes I agree, someone must have upgraded the driveshaft to a one piece at sometime, but it is completely worn out and sloppy as all get out. it may have had to be cut a little to accept the one piece, being a welder by trade wouldn't be that big a deal to replace to fit the two piece, but it sounds like the one piece is the way to go in your opinion, which I will definitely do if that seems to work the best. the one pc does have boots on it, looks almost like a cv application, is that how the new ones come or are the u-joints? seems messicks is the way to go, im pretty sure its on 05, the original data plate is missing, however there is a s/n written on the frame rail on the drivers side under the dump bed that reads 50958 and on a data plate welded to the back of the cage it reads 50589, so im pretty sure its on 05, any info on those kinds of numbers? messicks will probably know. thanks for you feedback.

look at 10 /20/ 15 post has a picture of the shafts ,carrier bearing and the part numbers. The 2 pc shaft is cheaper. in the short run. last time I heard the one piece is about 2 1/2 the price of the front and rear with the carrier bearing + or minus . bordercollie

edit: I sold my 2005 with about 4232 hrs on it when I bought this 2011 900. I still have the original one piece shaft with boots and no issues with 2900 hrs. however had replaced the 05 2pc type front shaft several times while I owned it and it still rattled. Too much of that rattling will wear out the shafts that they connect to so be careful of that also- in other words, I'd take off the shaft you are unhappy with and inspect the grooves on the shafts that it connects to , this would be to eliminate the possibility of those protruding shafts being worn and causing the one piece replacement to rattle. The protruding shafts on my 05 were well worn from all of the previous rattling and even with a good shaft continued to have a bit of slop. It would also be a good time to check out the finding under the boots and it it could be repaired. I would make that my first thing to do if it were me. I am a tight wad and have to be so yes, would definitely see if the shaft could be repaired first of all. Good Luck . :) collie

THe 05 should have had the 2 piece shaft as i dont think the 1 piece came out till 2007ish.Best way to tell is look at it .The 2 piece shaft is larger in diameter and will go from the front case to the tranny.If a 2 piece it goes from the front case to the carrier bearing on the middle frame then to the tranny.If you have a 2 piece i strongly recomend replacing it with the 1 piece as after the original oem carrier bearing goes out the replacements do NOT last as Ive been having to change the carrier bearing yearly.Ive never had an issue with the rear drive shaft only the front shaft u joints.When you pull the shafts check the splines on the front case and tranny.Hopefully they will be ok and good to accept the new shafts.If the splines on the tranny and front case are bad then you have 2 options.Replace the splines which will be a lot of work and expensive or you may be able to get away with JB weld to bond them together so they wont slip.Good luck and please keep us informed on your progress and if we can be any help feel free to ask as many wuestions.Bordercollie is out guru for everything TRV here.She is a valued member with a wealth of information. Welcome to the forum.

You found 50589 on the ROPS and hand written on the frame so we're going to assume both are correct. The ROPS # is supposed to match the last 5 of the VIN so they know if the ROPS has been replaced (indicating a probable roll-over).

Serial # ending with 50000 were built in December 2005. Not sure if that would be considered a 2005 or 2006 model.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate your feed back here, yes it looks like it had an aftermarket 1 piece put in, however, the old 1 piece shaft didn't have u-joint configuration, more like a cv housing to slip over the splines of the front case and tranny. do the new 1 piece shafts have u-joint set ups? that would be even better I think. thanks for you reply and feedback. Boredercollie has been amazing with info and feedback, I am a newby when it comes to the rtv's so it is much appreciated. I like the jb weld idea, the front case shaft and tranny shaft to look a little worn. so we shall see.

Thanks collie for that info, great view of the parts, helps tremendously. yeah unfortunately the old shaft looks shot, the shaft looks really worn, where it has been rubbing, so it has worn spots, and the cv ends look bad as well, It also appears the splined shafts from the front case and tranny look worn as well, so I am getting more bummed about this project. Mark mentioned getting the 1 piece with u-joints if they have that, I haven't call messicks yet, but im just not wanting to rip into those cases if I don't have too, but It looks like I might. I will try and get some pictures this afternoon to show you. Thanks for all your help collie, much appreciated.
