Lesson Learned 50 hr service

Just did the 50 hr service on my RTV X900. I elected to change both engine and HST oil. I didn't realize how much oil the HST took. Between the oil in the Hst under the bed and the resovoir under the seat it took almost 4 gallons at 22$ a gallon. Should have just changed the filters and added. The magnetic drain plug on the HST did have some metal/sludge on it.

Bud.....Life is long and if that is the worst thing you have spent money on then you need to get out and do some more livin........Seriously, I assume at that price that the fluid you put in is Super UDT 2......GOOD STUFF.....Who knows what was in there. Yes, some type of Kubota stuff but now you have the peace of mind knowing that you have the BEST. Second thought is that unless you do some serious strain and drain on the dump bed and trans that you will be going a VERY LONG time before you need to do a change.........

So, all in all, pat yourself on the back. Compared to a lot of folks that come on here telling about how they put Billy Bob's Super Store Universal Tractor Hydro fluid and are proud of how they treat their new vehicle/tool YOU ARE WAY AHEAD OF THE GAME.......God bless.....Dennis

Thanks Dennis. I have never regreted using the good stuff in lubrication. I use this little machine a lot on our cattle farm. So far I am very pleased with it once I learned how the hydrstat works and after I added the manual throttle and winch. Great little work horse. Runs every day doing something! Have a blessed evening. Kenney

Dont regret the change .Change the HST fluid yearly now and you will be golden.I do all of mine in 1 shot in the spring thats all filters and oil and hydro fluid and mine still runs strong and its a 2004

You will be glad to have it done and out of your thoughts shortly. Unless a special break in oil is used, I like to change everything being used at the 50 hr service on a new machine. I don't use my dump so I don't change -that just as Dennis says. tiphat: collie

So I have thought, and that by itself should alarm you.

It is likely that we use the bed hydraulic lift sparingly; however, the little pump that produces the hydraulic flow for the lift is running anytime the engine is running. Am I right?

So yes, I have not change the hydraulic lift fluid as often as the HST fluid, but since the lift pump is always engaged, shouldn't we be changing the lift fluid more often?

By all mean, tell me if I'm wrong or possibly smoking something, although I truly am not smoking anything.

Share your thoughts, please.

Yes the pump is running all of the time but bypasses things until the lift is enguaged.and for what little it is used I dont hthink it would need to be changed to often unless you use it for some of the hydro attachments that run full time. When I added the hydro dump to mine after market it has one small pump and like a 1 quart res for fluid.I use tranny fluid in mine and its still clean and strong after 4 years and I use mine all of the time.If one were to NOT use the RTV to often and just use it for funning around you could probably get away with a 2 year change maybe longer but when you use it like I do with hauling wood non stop in the summer and plowing in the winter you can see a difference in fluid color at the end of the season. A few years back when i had little to no snow to plow when i changed fluid in the spring i thought hell i could have went another season on it.There is a definate color diffrence between the colors. Now when I do changes or maintainance I always change filters but fluid color determins if a fluid change is needed.you gan get a good sample on filter changes when you pull one filter if its dirty ill drain the whole thing but if fluid looks good when i pull a filter ill just change filters and top off hydo with what little i lost during the filter swap.
