Lightly Rubbing

TWO GUNS

Senior Member
Our RTV is now 38 months old. And just as happy with it today as I was back when it first got picked up.
As most know, in the winter, hunting months I run the 27" 589's on this unit. And they have served me well, and still will. But for almost three years, I been telling that the tires are not really rubbing. Well, they are now. And reason is, thinking that the shocks are settling down. Nothing on the Right sharp turn, but on the left, on flat ground, we can hear a small " bump , bump , bump ". The knobbies are lightly touching the inside area. NOthing to worry about, but it is now just showing up. Before, I would have to be loaded down, in a ditch, turned sharp left, and just maybe, it would bump, but now, it is happening on level ground ....
So the ones that has the question, 26 or 27 inchers, I would go with 26'ers.
Thought I would just pass this on.
About the middle of May, be yanking off the 589's and putting back the original ATV's that came with the machine ....

Hi Two Guns, When you trade out winter for summer tires- just for the heck of it- check the ball joints. Mine went out a couple of yrs ago and was providing a lot of slack up front. But I bet you are right with the shock/strut guess. I am having great luck with the 26" 589 's recommended by you. Good luck and good to see you posting! Bordercollie

Jaime- if it is a constant rub , the springs have probably sagged . shocks and struts do not have anything to do with ride height, only bounce.

Bill

It's not a constant rub, only when I turn really sharp to the left . Nothing when turned right.
And really, it's not enough rubbing to hurt anything, but it is touching on that real sharp turn left.

Bill,

If the struts are weak, won't they sag/compress a bit? If I recall correctly, if you add a cab or plow, you replace the struts with the heavy duty ones. I don't think you change the springs.

I think the new struts come with heavy duty springs. Struts and shocks will not raise or lower ride height. All they do is control bounce. I am sure you have heard of gas shocks or struts. The light nitrogen charge is there to help stop foaming of the hydralic oil inside the shock or struts, it does not raise ride height. This is a common misconception that i have dealt with in auto repair for many years.

OK, thanks. Well the strut and spring is a consolidated unit so you have to replace both.
