Max tongue weight, RTV 1140

If I recall correctly, the sticker on my 2011 1140 says max tongue weight is 110 lbs....and tow capacity is something like 1300 lbs.

Neither seems like much to me. If I stand on the hitch, I exceed the max sticker capacity by 100% and more.

Now, I do understand that everything has its limits, and for a reason.

In the case of tongue weight, I'm wondering what the primary consideration is. Seems that it might be related to the following, but am wondering if any of you folks have additional insight.

  1. springs, bearings, steering will be harmed
  2. frame will bend, either front or rear
  3. legal worries...unless a low limit is advised, some idiot will use a crazy load at high speed and horrible terrain and sue Kubota for the results

That said, I just hauled my first significant load...in a small manual dump trailer which takes 3 FEL scoops of material. I guess it was about 2000lbs trailer included. Tongue weight doubtless several hundred lbs. Now, I don't expect to do this daily, maybe a few times a year.

I drove slowly, maybe 5 mph max on the gravel road, slower in the pasture. Conditions were dry. Traction was no problem. I did back the load into a ditch to assist unloading and noticed that the brakes would just barely hold the load prior to dumping. Pulling the load up the slope was difficult but accomplished....seemed I was running out of power rather than traction.

Anybody have towing experiences, positive/negative either at or over the posed tongue and total haul weight??? Words of advice??

I have an 8x11 trailer I pull in the field. Had it loaded with rocks. The torsion axle is rated for 3500 so I know when to stop loading when the tires touch the plywood floor. It seems to handle it quite well though I did not go into any deep ditches. Tongue weight has to be in the 125-150 range. I just couldn't pile rocks in that pretty box although that is what it is designed for.

juss load dat baby up and go!! i wish i still had my hpx right now or an rtv . i been movin so much stuff around in the past few days my hands are raw.that 1140 will pull pretty much anything you hook to it. i used to load my hpx down til i couldn't fit anymore or the hitch was about to touch the ground and with 589's on it i never lost traction (atleast not all times).
