need help with rear axle

okay my rear left axle is stripped along with the hub. so i got new axle hub bearing seals. know i just got to figure out if i can do it with out droping both sides. dealer told me to unbolt leaf springs and let the rear drop wich would let the axles seperate. does this sound right?

unbolt the leaf springs, take the clamp off the slip joint on both sides, mark the silp joint halves to make it easier to put back together, slide the axle each way till the axle shaft falls out of the slip joint.

the bearings go in from the front and the backside.there is a spacer in between them, and the seals are 2 different ones.when putting the axle shaft back in you need to keep the bearing from coming out .the shaft will push the bearing right out when you try to put it in.

so i have to take both sides off? can you just use a hose clamp to hold the boot on when reassembling? also do you take the leaf springs loose from the fram or the axle?

out of the housing is which side, the trans side or the axle side??the trans side is 3 bolts and the flange comes off with it. the axle side is the pain side, you need to take the axle nut off and hit the center of it with a brass hammer or something soft, not hard enough to bend the end over to not get that big cotter pin back in...it comes out of there hard, ive bent a axle end on one getting it out.

okay got it out liked to kill my self. LOL!!! i bent the end of the shaft(after soaking it in aerokoil its what we use on turbins) but that don't matter since i was replaceing the axle anyway since the spline was stripped.but then there were the bearings.the inside one wasn't bad but the outside was a pain n my tale. but finally got it. know i have to clean up the machined surfces with emory cloth, mic every thang to make sure all is well, and start reassemble it.but since i done that i found out the other side u-joint on the upper half wondering if the on one the bad shaft would fit and how hard it would be to change?

oh ya i got that thanks

Good to hear you are having success.I would sure check those ujoints if it were me. They wear out pretty quickly and it might be worth it to get new ones. Are yours the greasable ones? Mine were not and went through two sets in 3800 hrs. That bearing puller I made out of a big bolt and washers the right size and an impact wrench helped me get out my bearings- they were also stuck real good. I think there is a picture of my bearing puller in that thread I mentioned. Good Luck. bordercollie

It "would" work, the only prob. you may have is that you may damage the u-joint when you pull it. They can be tough to get out, like your expierience with the bearings. It can be done, but honestly I would consider going back with new. It's enough of a pain to pull all this down, then gamble on the lifespan of a used u-joint. Just my opinion. Either way you go we have plenty of people here that are more than happy to help you. By the way, wait till you put the rear axle bak on the rtv. That's when the fun starts! Just have to hold your mouth right. Good luck
