New BX2360 oil leak

Hi, this is my first post. Two months ago I purchased a new BX2360 with the 60 inch mowing deck. I have a 3+ acre lawn and I bought it for this purpose only. It has now 12 hours on the engine. The dealer is coming to pick it up on Thursday under warranty but I thought I would post the situation here because I'm really curious as to what it could be.

First of all, up until today, the performance has been incredible. I could not be happier with this unit. However, after mowing for about one hour today I looked down and noticed a black oily carbony "mist" deposit on the front and sides of the mowing deck and in the rims of the front wheels. The misting is a little denser on the left side of the tractor. I took some paper towels and wiped off the misting and within two minutes of mowing the oil was back. There is also some misting on the orange painted metal surface directly below the seat. I checked the engine oil level later on and it is fine. I am wondering if it is coming from the actual mowing unit.

I'm confident that the dealership will take care of it but I'm really wondering what it could be.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

My B1700 engine exhaust soots up my front wheels after a while when that diesel is working hard. If you are into heavy grass that little diesel is working hard. Maybe just exhaust soot you are seeing??????

Thanks for the response Kanook. Unfortunately it is not just soot; there is oil misting and it appears to be coming from the mowing deck; possibly one of the spindle shafts. It's under warranty, only 12 hours on the unit, and when I find out what's up I will post it hear. It wasn't working hard at all. We have been having a ptretty severe drought here in PA and I only used it to keep a few weeds under control growing out of the pretty much dormant, brown, grass.

Mower gearbox has a seal leak......hope you did not run it to long that way.....they will probably just replace the seal.....ask them if there was any 90 weight oil left in it....if they have not pick it up yet check it....and if there is no oil in it demand a new gearbox as the parts cost almost as much as a new gearbox.
If they just add oil it may go bad after warranty then you are stuck buying a 1,000 gearbox....gears for the box are 800.00 and if you need a bearing....my as well buy a new gearbox.
Your manual says to replace the oil seals every 2 years....I don't I just watch for any oil leaks.
I did replace mine once like 2 years ago....nothing wrong with them just a winter project.
I had to take the whole thing apart to press the shaft outa the pulley.
I fixed that with a ball hone so it just slip over the shat put anti seize on it so next time will not have to take the whole damm gear box apart which is a pain.
I have the 2350.
I think it comes with SUDT....but the manual says you can use 90 weight gear oil which is much better pressure lube for a gearbox.
I have a old MTD belt driven hyd that I have had for 18 years and all I have replaced is blades and a drive belt as the belt was rotton.
I use to repair lawn mowers and first thing I did with the old mtd when I bought it was take off the engine pulley and put anti sieze on it cause if you don't you will never ger it off after a few years.
I cut many of those pulley off to replace a belt and ther not cheap and takes a lot of time not to wreck crakshaft while doing it.
Job did pay well back then......200.00 or go buy a new mower.
Manufactuers should do that when the put it together sure would save a lot of pain....but they want you to buy new.
Really I like using my old MTD just as much as my kubota....42 inch deck saves triming just takes another hour to mow is all.
Always need a backup incase one breaks down....hell you need two of eveything nodays.....lmao

Thanks Art454,

I just checked the oil level in the mower gearbox by taking out the top(check plug) bolt. Clean oil started seeping out of the hole so it appears that no oil was lost from the gear box. The dealer is coming for the unit today and when I find out the exact cause I will post it here. Thanks

Great. I am glad to hear you called the dealer already and he is going to come. This early in the life of the tractor this kind of thing should only be dealt with by the dealer. I'll sure be interested in hearing what the cause was once he gets it solved. Good luck.

You probably got the hyd. loader valve installed as most come with them today.....wonder if one of them is leaking.....on my bx23tlb 4 lines under the oil pan and mine connect there is only thing I can thing of.
Thought for sure in be the gearbox.......guess we gona find out.
Engine oil is up close to full also the hyd.oil?
Only thing I could think of is would be crankcase oil seal is leaking or the front 4 wheel drive as they have seals up there to.
Let us know what they find.

A thought a little late in coming but worth mentioning.

If by chance you believe this (or any other mist/spray) of an oily fluid is related to any part of your hydraulics, exercise extreme caution in your quest to find it. If you have a pin-hole in a hydraulic line, it could have serious pressure behind it. Have heard stories of people running their hands along the hoses and found the pin hole. It was about 1/2 second after that bead of oil flying out nearly (or did) cut off their finger.

Yes be very carefull....I seen a guy put his finger over a small hole hit the hyd and went right threw his finger.....he did not loose it but it took and hurt for a long time till it healed.
Great post bczoom....it is so easy to make that mistake when your mind is on the problem.....ty
