New front fender wells

Has anyone had to replace the front wheel wells on their RTV?

Mine are rotting out and I'm trying to determine how best to approach the issue. Right now my only guess is cut out the existing and weld in some new plate. Not a fun proposition, but so far I haven't thought of any alternatives.

Thanks.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, Happy you joined in !!!!!

.... that is the first I have ever heard of . Been running in salt ? Acid and/or corrosion chemical ?

Is it just a spot or two, or the whole panel plate ? One or both sides.

What about the rest of the unit, does it show rusting out anywhere, if so, need to get a hand on it now !!!!

.......... two guns

I had to do one before. I had used some sheet metal. The problem I ran into is that the metal on the RTV was thin so I had to be real careful about melting it, so watch how hot you weld it. I was lucky due to it only having small holes from rust. Longest was on one of the bends. Didn't have to replace the whole fender well. Check for soft spots, I found a few that I was able to cover when I welded the sheet metal on. I had also sprayed a rubberized coating over it, inside and out, when I was finished. I agree with Two Guns check other parts of the rtv. The unit I worked on was in a corrosive plant, and I did find some other things I needed to address. Good Luck.

Thanks for the welcome and the information.

I use my RTV on a poultry farm (chicken litter and water leads to a lot of rust). The issue has mainly been having the time to tackle the problem, since we use the RTV daily (and of course, it's just been getting worse). Now I have a nice fender/floorboard problem to tackle.

Just need to bite the bullet and jump on it.

Once I get things fixed, I'll definitely have to spray something on the underside to slow down any future problems.

thanks

OUCH. Yes its a tad rusted Maybe Peanut can can make you some replacement parts to weld in or screw or bolt over to help firm it up

that would be a simple fix it was in my area .i would need the rtv to do the work to it but something tells me you ain't to close to my neck of the woods.

East Texas is my neck of the woods. I don't think it will be a real problem, it's just finding the time to do the work. I replaced the rear u-joints and started on the floorboards this weekend and I've already had to switch to another, more urgent, problem.

I'll get it finished eventually.

jeeze man that thing was ate up .look at it this way atleast you can show off your good work to your friends and have be able to say hey i fixed it all by myself. nuthin like doin the work yourself it makes you even more interedsted in doing other things too.keep us posted on the progress .

Finally got back to it yesterday. I don't know if I'd want to show it off very much though. Let's just say it works (it's ugly, but it works).

I'll put up a final pic when I get a chance. Between the new sheet metal and the new bed liner coating in the floorboard, it should last a little while.

Bad news there. For those of us who want to protect our floorboards and fenders, what kind of paint or other protective coating might we consider?

to me the best protection is maintance. when i had my hpx it had all metal floor boards and i would check it all the time when i washed it and would primer and paint anything that got scratched. if you leave a scratch on it somewhers it will just rust up and end up being a rust hole.there is no bullet proof coating for these things .anything will get scratched when metal is involved and it will eventually rust so just keep a wire brush and a can of primer and some paint and take care of any scratchs or chips in the paint right away.

Best thing going for keeping the undersides from rusting is Fluid Film....last year when I bought my new Super Duty pickup that was the first thing I did....got under it and sprayed inside all the body panels, under the truck, the frame....anywhere else I could spray with Fluid Film got it. The stuff flat out stops rust....if it's started it will supposedly prevent further rusting....I'm not sure about all that but I do know it prevents rust and also keeps my battery connections from corroding...I also use it to lube everything up, I've got my snow plow on my RTV covered with it as well, keeps all the pins and springs from rusting.

It's available at most John Deere places and the Kubota dealer where I got my RTV carries it as well. I buy it by the gallon and spray it on with an undercoating gun.:tiphat:
