Newbie here! So, to repair or replace?- that is the question

I'm on my third RTV900. The first- A 2009 I traded in on a 2014. The second, I still have. The 2014 is the IRS model-- which is (was!!) light years beyond the straight 2012 RTV900 still used by my farm hands.

A pipeline runs across my farm and about every other month some idiot inspector will leave a gate open and 40+ Black Angus take the opportunity to explore 100+acres of hay and oat fields. It was a Saturday afternoon two weekends ago-- no one around and the herd is loose. I throw a 100# sack of standard fitting in the back of my IRS and drive off to lead everyone back to the main pasture... (everyone is 'grain trained'). Everyone goes back except one four month calf.

Just to fit the picture together, my 240 acre farm occupies a valley between two ridge lines. The ridges are roughly 450 feet above the valley floor some 500 yards downhill.

So, I park the RTV pretty much near the ridge, aimed down hill (first error), pull the p'brake two or so clicks (which is usually enough to hold it)-- hop out and begin 'walking' the calf down hill to a large open gate. All is going well, and we (me and the calf) are about 300 yards downhill from the RTV when I hear this awful noise--

I turn and look in time to be clipped by my rolling, unmanned RTV as it careens wildly down hill, jumps a three foot diversion ditch and literally flies into the barn's cement wall.

I cut the front upper bumper off to gain access to the radiator (damage assess)as it had 'stove piped' all of the plastic parts against the windscreen. I took it to the dealer for damage repair estimate. Requires pretty much the whole front end (plastic parts, lights, and bumper) plus a whole new chassis.
All of the engine, Tx and mechanicals seem OK to the dealer.

Insurance company paid out and now the conundrum: fix to 'new', fix to a highly mod-ed condition, or part it out and buy new???

I found this site when I commenced the search for parts and goodies to mod. Then I got to thinking too much and so I decided to share my tale of woe (so to speak)... I paid $14K ($7K cash and my '09 trade) a year and four months ago. The unit has 175.1 hrs since new. Insurance paid out $7K in line with the shop estimate for 'repair to new' option.

It is obvious you all know way more about these than I do and I got to wondering what would you all do???

I'm just curious , ? (It is still "purdy" to me. :) I think I would have a heart to heart with that pipeline boss. They come through here once a year and it is trouble and would be expensive for them if they left a gate open.

I wonder if you could keep the 7 grand, and sell the bota as is .I'm thinking the chassis could be "fixed" by a person good with a welder such as Peanut. You need to get a good portion of your money back that you actually have in it . Thinking, if you could get 4 or 5 grand for it as is and then the 7.... Good luck collie.

I've had the chat several times... They always claim it was "the new guy" and they will talk to him/ her... I think I'll just pad lock the entrance gates and make them find me before entering from now on. The incident was really more my stupid that the inspector's transgression... but, I'm usually too easy on people!

The unit still runs, doesn't leak fluids or make 'strange noises.' If pressed I could still drive her 'as is'!! The problem is a personal one in that I try to keep my equipment in good 'knick' as I make a living from it. And loosing two or three inches in the cabin from chassis folding... well, it just doesn't feel right!

Collie, your point two is well taken... and the reason I started this conversation. I have MIG and TIG welders on the farm and a nice little machine shop, generally will (or can) fix most anything.

You are suggesting sell the 'core' and move on-- which isn't a bad idea as I have too many projects anyway. But winter is coming...

I found you guys looking for insights, options etc for modifying the whole thing into something more (turbo, silencers, more ergo seating, stretch the chassis a bit etc.)...

But like I said in the post, I got to thinking too much about alt paths...

I say modify it!! and take many many pictures so we can all enjoy your efforts. I also have property with rite of ways across it also. i always wondered if at the school were they train such employees that there must be a gate of some sort for them to open as part of their training and if they shut it behind them they fail the course and are asked to look for employment elsewhere.

Aurthuritis, This is a similar experience of my row cropper neighbor: He had cotton planted around an oil well on my b-i-l's property. So this oilfield fella goes in there to control weeds around the oil well. Spray something like Grazon (which hates cotton. ..drift is bad ).. costs the company 5 or 6 thousand dollars in damages. I felt really bad for the guy that did it because I could be in his shoes ... that is why I get so nervous where spraying pastures after the crops are up. Yea, I get all up tight with concern. If only it was a simple matter like closing a gate.. I would feel so much better and sleep better too. collie

I think you have to decide if you are after appearance or functionality????

If you are after appearance, then use the insurance money and let someone fix it.

If you are after functionality, then use the insurance check to recoup your money paid in the last trade and use it.

I'm driving my Super Duty truck with a wrinkled bedside from a "Stupid Human" trick such as you did. I pocketed the $2500 insurance payment and ignore the damage. Some other incident will come along and "redamage" the bedside anyway. I use my truck. It's not for looking pretty. :)

OK. If it were mine, I would take the 7 grand and fix it myself. I guess it depends on how bad the chassis is sprung and if the driveshaft still lines up along with other vital components . I have seen a plastic repair "welder" don't know if it would work but it may be something to look into. decisions decisions....It has so low hours.... collie

Transmission

I don't know if the trans would fit an older RTV900 but I will find out tomorrow. Think about it..

if you decide to part this out i would be interested in one of the front bottom A arm.Peanut and i are trying to develop a stick stopper for the new suspension and what would be a better template than the real thing?
