Now I know why I got my RTV so cheap

Since I bought the thing I haven't run it for more than a few minutes at a time. Hauled it to the farm Saturday and after about 20 minutes it died, overheated. Combustion gas blowing out the radiator and water coming out the exhaust. Gonna pull the head tomorrow after work, hoping I didn't bend a rod. Haven't gotten my service manual yet(wasn't expecting this). Any tips? Off I go into the archives!

Well, that is terrible news. Is the seller local?
I had my '05 run hot many years ago and it was my fan not working but I caught it quickly- see cooling fan post . http://www.nettractortalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13665&highlight=cooling Got an aftermarket much cheaper than oem that was better than the oem. Also, other members' hose clamps and actually hoses have been bad in such situations . You may can download a manual instantly from links members have posted on the forum
I wish you the best and keep us informed. bordercollie

I couldn't resist so I pulled the head tonight, surprisingly easy job. Rods are OK but the head is cracked. I'll make a quick attempt at posting pics.
Anyone have a head for sale?

Welcome to the forum. You should be able to find and get input in order to fix the problems you're having. That said, its a bad deal if someone knowingly sold you a bill of goods. I wish you the best.

First of all WELCOME ABOARD!!!! Lots of experience and knowledge here to help you out. Glad that you must have some base mechanical skills and obviously enough tools to get the job done. I truly hope the folks that have done what you are doing, of which there are many, see this and come forth. Obviously the stand back and tell you what you should do will come in; but mainly folks like Border Collie and some of the DEALER TECHs that hang out in the back ground will answer your questions with tips and hints........

There is a very powerful search engine on here so get help thee for sure. Messicks is a great source for parts and advice. They have a parts break down that is emailed to you one page at a time so perhaps someone will have that on hand; but its easy for you to get and refer to......God bless......Dennis

I'm not too upset. If the seller had told me it had a cracked head I would have still bought it. I've known him for years and he drinks enough he probably didn't remember what happened. It sat for a year in his barn and all he could remember was that it died.

How do I know what model my RTV is? The VIN plate shows RTV900, serial 14XXX.
I'ts a 2004 with hydraulic dump and full cab, orange.

The engine is the same- in the early models 900's anyways. The difference is in the hyd or manual dump bed , front bumper or not, and whether it has the hook up for hyd tools. Back then in the early years, it was the WS ,-( worksite) with bumper and hyd dump , GP General purpose - no bumper and manual dump-( I think), turf with extra features. ? and the recreational-( usually camo) I am sure members will chime in with more exact information. You can tell the year model by a certain number of the serial. I can't remember if it is the 7th or not.
I had a 2005 WS and now a 2011 WS no cabs though.
Like Dennis was saying, we have some good folks on here. Messicks Eqpt has parts diagrams to download from their website and wonderful parts people on the phone to help you get the right part and they can find the year machine you have- just give them the numbers on the plate there across from the the battery. You will sure like the diagrams they email to you instantly. Just choose the category. bordercollie

edit, we also need to figure out why it ran hot so it won't happen again. If he didn't do maintance , it coulda been just a clogged radiator.

Also check Ebay. There are some sellers there that sell used parts from machines that were dead and they salvaged all the good parts for resale.

Welcome to the forum. Wish it was under better circumstances.

The RTV you have has the Kubota D902 engine. If you want to replace the whole thing (head, valves, valve springs...) they're available at many places online for about $900-$1000.

I must say I'm really impressed with how the RTV is put together. I've ran a repair shop for 22 years and this little engine and accessibility so far is great.

Cracked heads are the common failure in overheating situations. With some shopping patience you'll find what you need. Kubotas in general are easy to work on
Post your progress.

My '06 must have ran hot before I got it since the cooling system was not complete. The spigot below the thermostat for the by-pass hose was broken off and missing. I got a 1/4" pipe tap and threaded the housing then screwed in a piece of brass 1/4' pipe to connect up the by-pass hose. Then I discovered the water pump was dripping out the port under the shaft. When the new water pump came in I discovered there were no fins left on the impeller so it couldn't have pumped much water. Once I got a system that held coolant I have had no more problems, other than the air cleaner housing was also missing, that I got a good used one from Dennis.

Got my new used head from ebay, hopefully I will have time to put it together later. It has fewer valve cover bolts but otherwise looks the same.
