I have bought a new rtv. I took it out for the first time last weekend and it performed well. The only thing bothering me is when it gets warmed up the power steering unit makes a whissing sound when turning. Is this normal for these units?``

Is the sound coming from the front hyd. cyl? If so, I would say that's probably normal. I haven't noticed it in particular when it gets warm. I normally hear it when I'm turning at idle or the RTV is under a load of some sort (like coming down a hill into a turn with the cargo box loaded).

Yes it sounds like it comes from the front end. Kind of like you can hear the fluid moving through the system with a whissing sound.

Next time you're at the dealer, mention it just in case there's a problem. Without being able to hear it, it's hard to tell if it's a normal sound or not. You also may want to drive one of the dealer's RTV's around the lot to see if it makes the same sound.

Are you in 4wd, on hills, under load, turning at low RPM'sor anything else that may make the power steering work a bit harder?

PS. Can you register or sign-in? Nice to see whom I'm chatting with.

In that case, I would concur with the dealer that it's normal.

I talked to the salesman today and he said that they do not drive them around the shop long enough to get the units warm. He is going to check into it with his contacts. I told him it does not do it until it is warm, apx 30 miinutes, and then it does it all the time. Thanks for you suggestions and help.

If your terrain/conditions permit, play around with it. Try 2wd, higher speed and/or RPM's when turning... It may quiet it down. I live in some decent hills but rarily need/use 4wd for traveling.

If you can hear it over the noise of the engine, I would say it is not normal. Is it coming from the steering valve just under the steering wheel or from the steering cylinder in the front of the vehicle between the front suspension A-arms? It sound like it is the cylinder...it's not that hard to replace...ask your dealer to replace it under warranty, if it really bothers you that much. It will probably work fine but it shouldn't make a lot of noise.

I put another 12 hrs on my rtv and it makes no difference if it is in 4wd or 2wd. It does it only after oil gets warm, it makes the same sound power steering units make when you have turn past the stops. I can see the problem at the dealer with a cold unit. In the morning when it is cold it takes about 2 hours before it starts squaling, then it does it the majority of the time. It appears if unit is leaning left and you turn right it is more defined, the same thing if leaning right and you turn left. It makes no difference ot high rpms or low, the warmer the oil the more noise.I will call dealer again mext week, and tell him about our chats with other owners that do not have this problem. Thanks again.
