Ramsey 5000# Honcho Winch - Any thoughts before I order one?

Hello - I've done some research and decided on the Ramsey 5000# Honcho winch.

Will be using mainly for pulling trees and logs to the trail and pulling scrap out of the rivines.
We bought our 50 acre farm from folks who owned it since 1946 and over the years a couple
of the rivines have accumulated many large items like refridgerators, stoves, hot water heaters,
scrap steel, oil tanks, etc.

Our RTV900 and 5000# Honcho seem perfect for the tasks at hand, saving my back another day.

Will be ordering the dedicated front mounting plate and 12' control lead as well. Not really
interested in going wireless at this time.

Any thoughts, concerns, questions, ideas, or..., before I order?

THANKS.

That's a Super Choice ....

I have run just about every winch on the market for the farm & equipment . Ramsey IS the quality winch. Never has had any problem with the at all. They are a little slower, but you can depend very much on them ~~~

I myself, have a Ramsey 3000 on my RTV. Rocker Switch / NO wireless

Why not the wireless? The way I look at it, it's easiest to be at the location of the thing being towed. If you're driving a go-fast or whatever and get stuck, you don't need the wireless since it's you that's being towed out. I have a Ramsey 3000 with the wireless and found that I use the wireless much more often than the switch/harness that's at the RTV.

When dragging logs, pulling out scrap... I like to be near the stuff being dragged out. I can therefore watch it closer and adjust to avoid snagging and such. I also find it handy when felling trees where I need to guide it with the winch.

If you're not using it for a plow, I don't see a need for a mechanical brake. Don't know if the 5000 comes with one automatically but the 3000 doesn't.

What's the amp draw on the 5000?

Got a pic or link to the mounting bracket?

Wireless might be the stuff.... But when I purchased mine, they were out of stock, so being I never owned a "wireless" system, Didn't think I would miss a thing !Plus, couldn't wait just one or two days, for I was excited about the new RTV and it'sgoodies !!!!!!!I told them to send the rocker switch style along with a mounting plate for the RTV 900 Kubota. The mounting plate fit perfect, everything fell into place like things suppose to. The next Ramsey winch I purchase will be the wireless model, unless they come up with a voice activated model !!![:)]

Voice activated would be nice. Ditto on a log splitter.

Where did you mount your dash switch? I received the little toggle switch so I drilled a hole through the plug that covers the flasher switch (since I don't have flashers).

Installed it inside where the Flasher's switch suppose to go. I also, have no flashers !!! Pull out the blank plug, turned it upside down so the small support bar wouldn't be in a contour of the dash. Had to drill small hole for support screw. Works perfect. Only thing is, the in & out reads upside downs, but, I'm the only one that will be using it , it doesn't matter how it reads.

Thanks for the help and tips.

zoom - Great point on the wireless and it seems you have just spent a bit more of my money!!! The idea of being near the log, scrap, etc., makes perfect sense. I was just trying to KISS.

The Honcho 5000# will not fit inside but Ramsey makes a dedicated plate for it. Here is the link showing the Ramsey Honcho 5k on an RTV900.

http://www.ramsey.com/atv/honcho5000.html

Unsure of the amp draw but it uses 4 gauge wire for the terminals.

Looks like I'll have to start reading the archives for installation tips for wiring and all.

Maybe the Honco 5000# is to much for my needs. It weighs in at 32 pounds, will I need to beef up the front suspension for it?

bczoom does have a great points on the wireless ... I personally don't believe you would have to beef up the front end of the RTVfor the 5000# Honcho. But also, Ramsey3000# winch, with wireless remoteisa total of 379.00 ~~ Plus the cost of the mounting plate (48.00) ~~~ Now by my order book from allterrainoline, the Ramsey Honcho 5000# runs 489.00, plus the cost of the Honcho Wireless Remote Kit is 149.00, and the Ramsey Honcho Mountng kit for the RTV runs 90.00, that's a total of $728.00 ~~~ compared to the already set up wireless winch of 3000#, total is $427.00 ( winch & mounting plate ), difference of $ 301.00 between the 3000# & the 5000# ~~~~

Now you may need the 5000# winch for your work, for I don't know. But I have useda 3000# many times doing many, many jobs ~~ and if I thought it was going to be a tuff one, I used a snatch block, which I like to use anyway for the reason it doubles my pulling strength, and saves alot of wear on my equipment. From looking at my books, the Honcho winch wireless partshas to be purchased separately,( unless they changed things ) for which is going to cost more money ... Also, all winches from that company we order from is shipped free, and that's is a big savings in itself !!!!!!!!!!!

TWO GUNS - Another great point made. When all is added up, the 3000# with wireless is a huge savings.

It seems the 3000# will move anything the RTV900 can hold down.

THANKS for the pics. Email sent your way.

High intake is next on the list.

I have found that doing a straight pull (no snatch block), the 3000 will bog down but can actually drag the RTV with the emergency brake on so that's enough for me.

TWO GUNS - Why do you need a mounting plate? Is yours mounted externally? The RTV has a winch mount already integrated into the front. The 3000 fits in there but just barely. It's a little hard to get to the lever to freespool but its doable.

Seery - No suspension changes required for either winch. There's been other discussions on the winch including mounting. Do a search but start with this thread.

Installation isn't hard but save a few hours to complete the project.

Also, when ordering, make sure you get the right fairlead. There's 2 bolt patterns. You'll want to make sure it matches the 2 bolts on your grill guard.

Another thing to consider. If you have the spare $50, consider switching the cable out and installing Amsteel rope. It's a lot easier to use as well as safer. I haven't (yet) switched mine but will be doing so in the near future. If you are considering taking this approach, check around to see whether a Hawse or roller fairlead is preferred for the Amsteel.

Yes, we installed ourexternally. I knew you could install them internally, but I chose to do the other, for reason it would be easier to run the winch and also, and for when it came time for the cleaning the lines and mud / dirt around the winch motor. When I'm in mud & water up to my knee's, didn't feel like I wanted to get on my belly to engage or disengage. Just a matter of what the operator wants.

Everything with the Ramsey 3000# installed on the mounting plate matched up perfect, including the fairlead ....

Been trying to attach a pic, but for some reason, the website keeps throwing me to the at&t page saying uploading page not found. They need to fix that !!!

I bought a 4000 # gorrilla winch on ebay it was for a mule but with the camo rtv I didn't have to have any extra mounting plates and it came with a rocker switch and a 12 ft hand held remote . I paid 189.00 with free shipping I pulled a10 in 30ft oak tree with it this weekend.

Are you saying that when you try to attach a pic here it's sending you to an AT&T page or is the place your pics are kept (e.g. photobucket) re-routing you to an AT&T page?

If you want, e-mail me the pic(s) and I'll post them for you.

Just as it completes loading up, ~~~~ it will blink over to a at&t page saying, the uploading page cannot be found. I will try again later !!!!! If it don't work, I'll send them your way !!! THANKS....

Sounds like you got a good deal !!! I myself, never has owned or used a Gorilla brand winch, but if it works, go for it. If you can save money, great !!!! I looked it up on the net, read the guarantee, it stated that ~~~~~100% purchase satisfaction GUARANTEE that your product will arrive in new condition.Sure hope so, that what I'd be a buying, a new winch ~~~~~~~ anyway, they are suppose to be waterproof & metal gear driven, that'sa big plus.

Hang in there ~~ You will be surprised what you can learn here !!!!

Must be something on your end.
First pic (these are TWO GUN's winch pics)

I installed the Ramsey 5000 on my RTV and am very happy with it. I also bought the wireless kit and it works great even though I did drill a hole in the dash for the toggle switch...
2 notes though..... the 5000 is very powerful and it does drag my RTV with the parking brake on. The other is I bought a rubber doughnut for the hook. It will keep the cable from getting pulled in too tight. You can get them on Ebay..

Installed the Honcho 5000# today. It took longer than expected since it arrived with no directions!

It's a beast. Was only able to pull a few logs around to try iy out.

Will post few pics tomorrow after work.

Did any of your Ramsey winches come with a front hook? I had several laying around but would have thought they would ship with one.

Thanks folks for all the help and comments.

The hook on the end of the cable? If so, mine did. If not, what hook are you referring to?

Just a heads up but be careful with that winch. A Ramsey 3000 will bog down before it starts dragging the RTV around. That 5000 has a lot more power. Just be careful that when dragging a log or something that you're going to be OK if the log gets a snag and stops otherwise you're RTV's going to start dragging towards the log.
