rear cv axle

I have a 2004 rtv 900 with 325 hours on it. It is now making a popping sound from the left rear axle, I believe this to be the u-joint or joints. My question is can these joints be replaced or do you have to replace the whole shaft also how hard is it to remove the shaft?

From what I understand, you can replacejust the u-joints >>>>

Shouldn't be to hard, just a little time will be involved. BUT ,while you have that side off, REPLACE BOTH JOINTS WHILE YOU HAVE IT TORE DOWN !!!! And if your in the " fixin' " mode. Go ahead and knock out the other side !!!

Somebody else recently had to do that. There's a thread here that will discuss it.
Let me know if you can't find it and I'll peek around.

325 hours. Do you suppose that is about the average lifetime of those axles, u joints, etc.? Just wondering.

Nope. If this a bad U-joint on the rear axle, it's only the 2nd one I've heard of.

bordercollie is over 1800 hours with no axle or u-joint problems. A U-joint on the driveshaft going to the front transaxle was replaced but I believe it was one of the very early ones that were notorious for rattling.

BCZoom is right Keifer. I have only had trouble with my driveshaft.(knock on wood) How much out of warranty are you? This doesn't sound right. Have you checked the wheel bearings? It shouldn't be that either but our feed wagon wheel bearing just went out and it made a click every revolution and then sort of an" eeep"noise. Check it out ASAP to avoid serious damage.Good luck and keep us informed.1839 hrs and counting. Bordercollie[&][&]

Something isn't right there, they last longer than that for sure !!!!!

I have 15 hours on my rtv and I went out on the state road last week and i heard a noise coming from the front wheel. I haven't driven it since that happened... I called my dealer and he had no idea what it was. He said to bring it in so I needed some time in the shop to get a project done and said I would bring it in in a couple of weeks. The noise sounds like a brake drum on a grinder when it hitsa high spot and grinds it smooth...........It seems to grind only on certain spots as the wheel turns........Any ideas........

First, a week since you drove it last?!?!?

The first thing I'd check for is ice/snow caked inside the rim as that's normally the cause when I get a similar noise.

Most everything else is sealed so it would be difficult to have something internal make that noise.

I'd consider jacking the front end and spinning the tires to pinpoint the sound so see if it's internal or snow, ice, stick or something rubbing.

Didn't mean to let you out.........Just picked the two names that were contributing at the time........When that happened I took the rtv home and washed it all even under...........Then checked it all out and waxed it........Now it sets in the shop waiting to go to the dealer........Didn't find anything on the wheels.........wasn't even snowing at the time........It was during that 4 day warm spell..............I haven't had it in mud yet......Just flat ground........

Just like bczoom said,

Jack it up and spin the wheels, get another set of ears in there to help you listen. Zero in on it while the other does the spinning. Your probobly going to find out it's something very simple . Is there so sticks hung up under somehow? We had a small stick one time drove me crazy for about 20 minutes, until I took time ( or got to where I could look ) to find out what it was >>>>

What speed, were you in 2 or 4, H, M, or L >>>>>>

Hi, I will third that about jacking it up and listening to the wheel as it spins. Spin in both directions. When you have it up see if there is any bearing slack showing. You may also want to make sure the lugs are tight.I had a truck do the same thing once. Drove it backward and forward ,backward and forward and a little rock fell out. Those sticks will hide and drive us all nuts at some time or another too. If it is hard to get to the dealer,I might would even pull the wheel off and prod around... but the warranty should cover you for anything internal so don't worry. They even gave me a new seat just before mine expired. This one is cracking now though. That UV light I guess.Good Luck with this and keep us informed.Bordercollie[&][&]

Ok, the axle problem....

Removal of the halfshafts requires dropping the axle. You'll want to pull the u bolts on the leaf springs. Then, move one side of the axle back, and at some point it will drop free of the halfshaft, then disengage the other side.

Ujoint failure on these axles is rare, and one of the main reasons I recommend keeping the machine as clean as possible. Cleaner = less chance of failure.

Front end noise...

Check to be sure the "wet brakes" are in fact wet with fluid. If I recall correctly, it should be UTF in the front hubs. If so, then the cv joints are the next likely culprit.

Your dealer will take care of this for you so don't worry about the deep stuff. I changed my fluids in my front axles and it was the color of new.I have done this twice so far and I have 1840 hrs as of tonight.Good luck, Bordercollie[&][&]
