rtv 1100 noise

I haven't had to take mine off of the 2011 thankfully. The '05 900 original has ujoints- member Mark Sibole had some pictures of that model in a thread. I don't know if they are similar or not. I will post that link when I find it but think it is in the" rear u joints needed again" thread. I do know that make a GPS that will steer it for you. but $$$.I saw it last year when researching a gps for spraying. bordercollie

edit Mark's post with picture: http://www.nettractortalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13788&page=2 His post #25 has the picture of the original style joint for the 900.

Welcome to the forum! Before you get too much into it, look at your splines. Primarily the pinion shaft on the front differential and the mating end of the driveshaft. These will get loose and wobble up an down when you are riding causing a knocking noise. If you reinstall the driveshaft on the front diff. and try shaking it up and down you will see it move (play) on the pinion shaft. This will eventually wear out both sets of splines. Unfortunately this happens on both set-ups, the 1 piece and 2 piece shaft setups. I believe Kubota went to the 1 piece driveshaft to try to fix this issue, but the length and weight of the shaft still allows it to happen. We have started using a washer followed by an o-ring on the pinion shaft to help give some tension to the driveshaft and make it run more true. I had found an article from a fellow who originally did this to his. Drill the inner hole of the washer slightly smaller than the O.D. of the pinion shaft. I think we use a 29/64 drill bit. Tap the washer on the pinion shaft to the groove (looks like where you could install a snap ring) then follow the washer with an o-ring. You may be able to substitute with a sealing washer from a garden hose. This will help you temporarily.

My son works at a chevy dealership under warranty repair and they warranty stuff like this all the time if out of warranty even after it runs out.
I used to years ago to and we did the same thing all the time for customer service....you want to keep em coming back.
Back in my day you only got 1 year warranty....we went back up to 6 months. I had something wrong with my 900 I used to have and it was 3 months pass warranty but I told them before warranty ran out something was wrong with it.
When it finally messed up they came and pick it up fixed it and brought it back all free of charge.
There are all kinds of tricks they can use.....hell they all warranty stuff they never do just to keep in business.
Really its there fault for not finding the problem in the first place.

So you should not have a problem and if you do call kubota and tell them you had it in there for this problem and they messed finding it.
The dealer does not want to be red flag for bad service from kubota and take a chance of loosing there dealership over something stupid like this since they missed the problem in the first place.
You paid big bucks for the machine....you should have no problem getting a replacement.
I had a front hose for the blade on my 900 after 2 years because they did not tie it up to the frame and hose wore threw riding on the power sterring shaft. They gave me the whole kit both hoses and all that came with it and they came to the house and replaced it all free.
On my 1100 had a problem with the blizzard blade blowing the fuse they came and got it replaced the whole main wire cable brought it back and never charged me a dime.

Like I said they want your business they will keep you happy and I have bought 2 tractors from them before and they had to pick one up for some warranty issue and they came and got it and brought it back all free of charge to.
I know I got a good dealer.....but good dealers do this.

Good Luck and you should not have a problem with this IMO.

Hi again all,
Mine were stiff and one end was worse than the other, noise was more like a rattle than knock and would increase with intensity and frequency as speed did.
More pronounced in the 15-28 mph range.
The splined shafts at Diff and Trans have a ORINGs on them also to dampen this, make sure they replace those also with lots of grease. Mine were flat from the stiff joints.
Since you had it in the dealer prior for this, they should and Im sure will honor this as warranty. Pretty sad if they do not....
This shaft turns all the time, when engaging 4 wheel drive you are bringing in the front Diff.

I agree, It should be covered. I had hoped that this new drive shaft would be IT and solve our infamous rattling problem. Keep us informed because we are all in the same boat and we want to see you treated right. Yamaha had the same problem with the stator on certain model grizzlys and will cover that even out of warranty if you raise a stink. $1000 otherwise. bordercollie

I noticed mine in 4 wheel drive in high gear makes more of a noise than if left off. So I only use it in low or med. anymore.
On the dirt or grass you don't hear it in high....but get on a paved road and u notice it right off the bat.
Makes me think when you are in 4 wheel drive the front diff and back diff are off a little....meaning not 1 to 1.
Pisses me off you pay all that money in 300 hours it starts costing money to fix.
You hardy ever replace u joints in driveshaft in a car or truck......yet the RTV can't make it pass 300 hours....wtf
I'll have to jack mine up and run it....bet its outa round and not balance either.
That will take any driveshaft out fast.
Am begining to think only thing kubota makes is a good engine.
This year I did not even use the 4 wheel drive not enough snow.
Guess I'll only use it when I have to.
I can lock the rear end in so both tire's turn at the same time....works just as well as 4 wheel drive most the time anyway.
My manual says just replace it....no parts to even try and fix it.
Since COV62431 said the splines on the driveshaft wear out....must not be a good fit or something is not made right....also can't be good on the splines of the rear and front diff. to.
Guess I'll have to take it off and make sure there is plenty of grease in the splines so it can move back and forth without wearing them out...maybe even drill and tap and put a grease zerk in them.
Nothing like fixing there f ups.

Well here is the story, I stopped at the local axle shaft out fit and they told me that they are unable to get these joints. He told me they are in the works but they are roughly still six months out from being produced by the aftermarket company. I have to believe that their word is gospel, they are the place to go if you need any kind of shaft built or balanced or whatever. Thats not the results I was hoping for.

I called the dealer and they were very receptive to helping out with the labor but they didnt have any parts in stock to do the repair. They were also unsure as to whether or not Kubota would do anything to help out with the cost of the parts. I am eagerly waititng to hear some positive news back from them.

Its to bad its not like the good ole days when we used to have lock out hubs on our trucks. If that were the case we could have this shaft remain still until we needed 4WD. My machine has 180 hours on it and I figure if it were a vehicle it would roughly equate to about 8,000 miles. Its pretty pathetic that the shaft is bad with the equivalent of 8,000 miles on it.

One more thing; the guys at the axle shaft shop both said how dry both joints were for such little use. Kubota probably forgot to grease mine!

As soon as I know something I will share the news. I appreciate all the feedback.

If it is the CV joint and i know it had to be replaced eventually Id poke a small hole on the boot and pack that poppy full of grease and plug the hole with some RTV sealant. Its a short term fix till you can afford a new CV joint.and whewn you replace the joint you will want to replace the boot anyways

So it sounds like we may have to take the boot off of both sides also to make sure thery are lube right?
This gets better all the time.
Buy something new take it apart to make sure the job was done right from the factory......no wonder they give you what is it now....6 months or a year warranty?
For the price of these machines should be 3 years....they cost as much as a small car.

Its not the issue of being able to afford it, it is more of an issue that I shouldnt have to be doing it yet. I would understand if I had 3500 hours or something but I buy new equipment and keep it updated so I generally dont have to worry about it. however you bring up a good idea that I will implement if I have hard time locating the parts to fix it.

I bought one of those band tools for crimping the CV bands so i could reinstall the bands after I replace the joints (if Kubota doesnt do it for me). Mine were as dry as a bone and both boots are in great shape so it didnt get washed out.

So you took it apart and it was dry right?
If so that looks like my next job.
I'll take it apart cause mine u so far outa warranty and am dam sure not going to spend 400 to 600 for a new one.
Explains why the splines wear now.......ffffff bota.
Thanks for the info....I'll take it apart to make sure it has plenty of lube cause mine is just a little hum in 4 wheel drive.
My manual says nothing about it.....how you take it out?
Seems like there would be a bolt somewere you have to remove to remove driveshaft right?
Like to know because am in a wheelchair and don't want to get all my crap out just to get down there to look.
Info would be nice since repair manual says nothing on it.
If they won't replace yours my as well clean it up....lube it and try it.....you have nothing to loose.
Thinking about it I may just drive it up on the car hoist for that job.
I got so much crap I got a car on the hoist cause am outa room......lmao
Keep us informed whats going on.

Thanks.....Art

I took a few pictures to help show the wear I mentioned. The first 2 pics are good splines, all the others are showing the wear. Look at how the splines are wore to points on the front view of the shafts. These are the 2 piece setups, but the wear is the same on the one piece shafts as well.
