RTV 500 overheating

I have a new RTV 500 that I bought 2 weeks ago.It currently has 4.8 hours on it.Yesterday we were riding and my wife noticed the temp gauge going up.We had gone through a mud hole but pulled through with no problems. We stopped and I checked the screen that protects the radiator and it was clean, just a little grass on it.We went back tto the camp and i hosed the back of the radiator off and didnt really see any mud or the like on it.We werent pulling anything just out riding in the woods.has anybody had this happen before? I rode it for a while after and the temp was OK.Didnt check the water level due to the heat. Will check it when I go back tomorrow.Any feedback is appreciated.

You are doing the right thing by checking the water level& keeping the screen clean. One would be surprised how much difference it makes with a clean radiator. Keep it as clean as possible, grass, mud, dust , etc should be cleaned out as much as possible >>

You say the temp gauge was going up ....Did it get into the red, or just close ?We have900's here, and they have fans thatcycle that kicks in and out to help cool. Does the 500's have the same ?

just a quick note on temp gauges. It's "normal" for the temp gauges to read close to the red under normal/heavy usage. The calibrationison the high side of the tolerance but there is nothing wrong with them technically. As long as they do not read into the red they are good. The older RTV's temp needles read closer to the 12:00 mark or even less than that !!!!

the engine could have burped meaning it had a air pocket in it somehwres and it worked it's way out now the water replacedthe air and now you have a low water level. you could try some alot of utv racers and others use it and they all swear by it

Hi. Several members (including me) have mentiond how the hose clamps weren't tight on some new machines and that they had coolant leaks . Check out this possibility . Those rubber hoses and clamps could probably use a tightening up after getting heated up for the first time anyway. I have the best luck using a socket and rachet for snugging them up tightly. well i posted this on another sight one time and it kinda got everyone thinkin of something diferent. but to find out where your loosing fluid if it's small and hard to find just run the motor til it gets nice and hot then throw some flour on it and wait for a wet spot to appear .the wet spot will tell you where the hole or leak is.

Tommy I had a girl friend like that - throw a little flour - find the wet spot everytime>

Jerry Scratch a dog and you have a full time job!!!

I found the problem. The radiator fan had come unplugged underneath .I assume a stick got it and pulled it loose. Before I found it I could hear a fan running but it was the one under the drivers side. The radiator fan is so thin you cant see it unless you are looking for it.fan is running and all is good now.

Happy you've got it going. Something like that will worry the mess out of me !!!!
