Has anyone found a skid plate yet? I am looking for a full plastic bolt on plate. I have one on my HONDA atv. It is excellent. Absorbs shock when making contact with rocks etc. Helps slide across rough terrain. I live in Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. "Mineral Capital of Canada". Severe rocks, beaver dams to cross on way to hunt camp. Any info is much appreciated!

We have a member here on this forum, tommy 20/69 , that is a professional fabricator. He builds all kinds of accessories for all UTV's... Matter of fact, he's been fabricating manyitems for the RTV's, from what I understand, he is in the process of purchasing a RTV 1100 just for pattern reasons..... so he may fab more items. I know after talking the other day to him, one of the things he was fixin' to add to his product line, is full skid plates, nerf bars, and heavy duty bumpers for the front and back ofRTV units, Give him a email, sure he can help !!!!

He has made several things for my RTV 900, and is in the process of totally bullet-proofing a brand new RTV 1100 that belongs to another member.... He's good, and he's fair !!!

well i don't know about plastic.but i am doing one for the 1100 and i should have some pictures of it after a few weeks . a guy asked for one and i am gonna do it so i guess there will be two but it ain't gonna be plastic.lol i'm workin on gettin mine by the end of the week or m hopefully by the beginng of next week at the latest so i will have a full time model to work off of . but there will be some full under body skid plate system coming in a few weeks.if thats not to long to wait i'm sure the price will make the wait worth while.we don't work by the hour we work by the donations . just enough to cover materials and the electricity and whatever. so . look for them in the future.

mannie where do you live at or where about do you live at. i'm wondering if the bottom of the 900/1100 are the same probably not but if not i can steal twoguns rtv and make some or anyother members 900 rtv that is willing to bring it to me for a pattern i will hook them up with something you know make it worth thier while for doing be a favor. infact if they was to bring me the 900 for a few days so i can make the plates and templets i can make two sets and one set can go home with them for their troubles. but it will take a few days to complete this type of job.

That's pretty far away to drop it off at your house Tommy... [:P] [;)]

well that is far away but all i can tell you is there will be a skid plate system coming for the rtv.s sorry you live so far away . i need to hookup with someone with an rtv900 around the houma/ thib maybe morgan city area that is willing to part with their machine for a day or two at a time. the 1100 is gonna be no problem but i can't say the plates will fit the 900 too because they might not.but i'll find someone or figure something out.

Hi Tommy, thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate your offer to help out. After hitting a protruding rock going at least 40MPH on my HONDA 450 ATV and inspecting the damage only to find the plastic plate scratched, dented, no tears, I could not believe it. I felt the impact and surely thought the machine would have sustained seroius damage but nothing! This was the most seroius incident I can remember. However, there were many more skids, bumps endured over the last 4 years since I installed the plate. I am going to follow through and see if I can find this plastic material and make one for the RTV 900. In my previous post I mentioned the ARMORDILLO web site. It appears the owner is retiring and selling. However, the plate specifications are still there. Steel sounds good but I do believe the plastic has so many more benefits that far outweigh using any steel. I know from experience.

Mannie,

If you find out the type of plastic, please post it here.

Tommie - I agree with Mannie that the plastic may be better due to weight and capability to "bounce back" instead of dent. How thick of steel do you think you would make yours? How much would that weigh?

Brian

well the plastic is fine for a 400lbs 4 wheeler or a 1000k rhino but when you have a 2000k rtv i don't think plastic will help you out much.and most people have loads in their rtvs so add that to the total weight of the rtv's and you get around 2500 maybe 3000k lbs plastic just won't hold up. i going to go with a 3/16 plate that way it will slide over rocks and bounce off and if it does bend you can take it off and smack it with a hammer and flatten it back out again rather than have to buy another piece of plastic skid plate .i know alot of rhino owners who took thier plastic skid plates off and went with full body metal skid plates for protection and safety because sticks was getting shoved through the plastic and coming into the cab area.the skid plates can be made out of aluminum or metal what ever the buyer wants.but the metal ones would be made out of 3/16 metal and the aluminum ones would probably be made out of 1/4 inch aluminum. but i can't see useing plastic as a skid plate i would crack it the first time out . this was just my opinion

Tommy, excellent feedback. You got me thinking again..... The ATV skid plate I have is 7/32 inch thick. After reading your post I will look for 3/8" material. Maybe even 1/2 inch. Let's experiment with both the metal and plastic and post the results. It will benefit all of us in the long run.

i undertsand about the 4 wheeler but it' s a weight isue 40mph with a 400lbs atv hitting something and 25mph hitting something at 2k is a big diference the aluminum plates will ot be any heavier than the plastic but they will be stronger plus if you dent then=m you can hammer them out but plastic cracks it would be good if you got a set of plastic ones and we put on a set of aluminum one and seen what ones took a hit better. your best bet is to try going into some of the offraod forums and see what they use plastic of aluminum.

good deal i always test the thing i make so i will go and run it up onto a big rock or something i did have a website to a offroad guy who have a aluminum full underbody skid plate and this thing had dents in it atleast a 1/2 deepso i know it took a beating. after i get my 1100 i'll kniow for sure how much weight is gonna be involved in the skidplates but i know making it out of amumiunum it will be pretty light.i'm gonna go search for that web sight of that rhino.

if you look at the lineup you won't find any "utv's' my guess is they are to heavy for the plastic to serve it's purpose. unless i missed the utv section??? those basicly looc like mud skids so the bottom of the atv's slid better along the mud sure they will protect some but plastice does breakdown after a while if you don't keep it armoralled plus it willafter time even with care get brittle and crack.just like the fenders do . let me ask you this do you use your fenders as rub ralis to skid along trees?no you can try a set if you can get them to make you some but they might tell you the same thing it won'e suport the weight of a utv. there is a reason they don't make them for the rtv900!!

I am telling you these plates are unbelievable. I would buy one immediatly for the RTV 900. Unfortunately they do not make one.

just think that was a 400lbs 4 wheeler sitting on top of it what would have happened if it had 1500lbs or 2k lbs on itthe plate would have flexed all the way to the diferential and hit it .i would have to see one tested on a rtv before i would put some money into a plastic skid plate.

here ya go this is why i don't think a plastic skid plate will hold up. look at what looks like 1/8th aluminum does with the rocks . now 1/4 " would hold up alot better but this is a loaded rhino with extra tools and stuff on board so i figure the weight at about 1600lbs there is a slide picture in there of the skid plate underneath . i think it should be 14" atleast but it looks like he has 1/8th " thick aluminum . just think what a loaded rtv would do to some plastic ???
