rtv900 stopped running

I've been having problems with fuel (cutting in and out). Last week I changed the fuel filter and run it with still some problems. Would work good then go back to it's old ways. While working in the woods with the unit it finally stopped running all together. Could not restart. I towed it back to barn and took out air filter then tried to start with no success. This morning I took of the fuel lead from the tank to the injector and tried to see if fuel supply was there at the injectors.....NO FUEL!

Is there a screen or another filter in the fuel tank? Is focusing on the fuel tank the right direction? What other test should I perform?

The unit was bought new in 2005 and has 300 hrs on it. Obviously, it's a diesel.

Welcome to the forum ! I have an '05 also. So when you changed the fuel filter, did fuel run out of the fuel line as you changed it? On the front of the filter as well as the rear before you finished hooking up both of the hoses? Mine will . If it doesn't , then something may be blocking the uptake in the tank. I have heard of folks blowing air into the tank through the fuel line just before the tank- this will just stir up any crud in the tank but will let you know if fuel starts coming out the line after the momentary blast of air that you need a tank cleaning. I have 3900 hrs on mine and have used a lot of diesel so it never gets a chance to settle . Also make sure the filter installed in the right direction. I'd put the fuel filter back on immediately before any cranking at all because if any crud gets in the injectors then it's a mess $$$. Check the fuel lines too and I'd replace them if you need to clean the tank. They have a limited life after a few years or so and can later cause problems. Good Luck, bordercollie

I agree with bordercollie 110%. Check fuel filter direction. Might want to think about running a fuel line to a mason jar ( with fuel filter attatched to line ). And see if it will pull from there.
Cut you a piece of line, run from fuel filter to mason jar. ( with jar full of fuel )/ See what happens. If it cranks and runs. REMOVE TANK AND CLEAN. Pick-up line could be stopped up.

Removing the tank is a no brainer. I witnessed a tank swap-over when my RTV was brand spanking new. That was when everbody was having tank/cap leaking problems.

Don't ever run fuel into your machine without it going to threw filter, it don't take but one mistake, and there goes the $$$$$$$..

Also, I have herd of mean people putting stuff like rags and stuff inside tanks for just being mean. And we all know how big the throat of the RTV's tank is.

Just my two cents worth >>>>

does the rtv have a hand primer pump? if not you could install a boat gas tank bubble pump that way if you run out of fuel you can prime the system up.a lot of the older rhino's would air lock and a few people put them hand pumps in to solve the problem.sounds like it's air or a loose hose like bordercollie said check them hoses deisel engines don't like leaks .the littlest leak will kill the engine.

rtv stopped running

thank you all for all the great suggestions. i'm going to start with two guns suggestion so i can figure out which direction i'll go next. i'll be back with a report.

.... while you are there, go ahead and put yourself a new filter on the line. Even if you just put a filter on it.
Also, go back with a whole new batch of diesel fuel in tank. When you do the test mentioned, use new diesel, don't use ANY fuel out of the tank.
Do you see any fuel in the filter at all ?

Well, armed with all these great suggestions, i slipped out the back door and went to work. after being sure that the issue was in the tank, i removed it. i couldn't believe my eyes when i removed the fuel float and all three connections to the tank. They all were contaiminated with rust and dirt. The bottom of the tank had crud, worms & whatever you can imagin. it was the worst i ever saw and you would think that the tank was on the unit for 50 years instead of just 299 hours.

last year i started using a 300 gal storage tank that been sitting idle for at least 4 years and now with hindsight, it looks suspect. the only other consideration would be the unit sits for 6 months while we go south, however, it has never bit us before. i'm also very careful about clean fuel (you'd never now by the condition of the tank). i got picutures, but being a newbee to this site, i'm not sure how to download them.

well, time to get new parts, put it together, bleed injectors and go back to work with a running rtv900.

thanks so much guys. your suggestions and insight was just what i need.

God bless you all.

.... hey, it good that the tank is plastic. And it also good you use a filter. Let's just thank
God it didn't get to the pump. Then you would of had troubles.

Have you ever heard of a Mr. Funnel. They work great. Need to look into one as a superior investment to your equipment. We use this little contraption on every fill up on the RTV. Matter of fact, on most things around here, we use it. And have save us much trouble.

Posting pictures is no problem. Go to below this area that you post, you will see Manage
attachements, click there, and then browse, pick your picture and post .....

Something to consider for the future is when you know you are going to have it sit for any length of time is to top off the tank. Where fuel is, air can not create moisture from condensation. You would be amazed at the amount of moisture you can get from a tank that sits around less than half full. Same can be said for your bulk tank. When I get below 1/2 tank on my 300 gallon tank I start watching the price and get it filled as soon as possible. That was January this year and with the price jumps lately I am glad I filled then.

just got to the computer this morning. See you done found a Mr. Funnel.

They do work. Mister, that is one horrible looking picture.

Keep your tank full at all time when you can. Don't let one sit half full. Problems will arise.

Condensation. If you have to let your machine sit up for any period of time. Put you some
Diesel fuel stabilizer in the tank.

.... ey8675,

about your pictures, you might have to downsize them some for them to post.

but looking at that one picture, i got the idea. BAD, BAD , BAD >>>>

Let us know how it works out.

Instead of the large bulk tanks (that we used years ago) we started storing diesel in the 5-gallon cans - as suggested by a friend of my late Dad's that worked @ the bulk plant. I have a couple 2.5 gallon can's that are much easier to pour from, and to keep the smaller amount's in if I only have couple gallons left. And I keep my tractor's tank full.

05 with 300 hours that thing just sat there . like the others have said it's best to top the tank off when not useing it . i top off my tanks when i get back from riding even if i just have to add a half gallon.also for deisels you might wanna try adding a bit of 2 stroke motor oil to the tank. when i fill up my truck i put atleast a quart of it .the fuel they have today with that low sulfer is burning up stuff everyday people use it .some even filter out their oil from their engine after a oil change and add it to the tank. deisel is basicly a thinned out oil but with all the epa stuff they had to cut out a bunch of lubricating additives from it so adding a bit of oil to your tank helps out alot .i add 2 stroke oil and a half bottle of slick50 cetaine boost .just by adding the 2 stroke oil i notice an improvement in my mileage and with the slick50 additive it gives me even more mileage. but never add atf to the fuel some say it works but thats faulse it will eat away at the seals just use good old 2 stroke motor oil i would say a pint to every 10 gallons maybe 2 pints would be better.
