Smoking intake heater glow plug

I have a 1533 that the check engine light keeps coming on after a few hours of use. I had the the hood up today and noticed when I turned the key on the intake heater glow plug beginning to smoke. As soon as I turned the key off it stopped. The top of it is pretty corroded. Could this be causing the check engine light to come on?

Guessing the tractor had been running a few hours when you had the hood up and saw the smoking glow plug. Right? And yes, I would hope that would cause the check engine light to come on.
Replacing the glow plug would be my first step.

No, the tractor had been off for a few hours. I checked the oil, made sure there was no water in the fuel, then started the engine. I noticed that the glow plug was smoking, looked electrical. I turned the tractor off, cleaner the corrosion off and put the key back in but didn't start it and the plug started smoking again.

Does your tractor have individual wires going each glow plug or 1 wire to the first plug then in series to the others?

If it has individual wires or if the smoking is coming from the first plug in series, did you check the temp of the wire going to the plug? If it's hot, the wire could be bad (internally corroded or bad connection). If it's cool, I'd replace the glow plug.

The manifold heater should not be smoking whether in use or not, and certainly not be in play with engine stopped and key switch off. Must be a relay or something shorted out. You should remove the wire from the heater (and probably disconnect the battery as well) until you get it sorted out.

I did. My plan is to replace the glow plug and check the wiring and replace if needed. I had to break off the terminal lug on the stud because the nut was so corroded. It doesn't smoke in the off position, it smokes when the tractor is on or the key in ACC position.

I think it is the individual wire to each plug. Haven't traced all the wiring out yet. It has one wire going to the terminal on top and then a ground wire below that.

Should be only one plug. It's a manifold heater element, not a glow plug. The heater is not the problem, rather it's the control circuit for it.
