Split Oak

I have a nice size oak tree in my pasture, that's doin' the split. I think "Charlie & Gang" had something to do with it. There are still some large limbs hanging in it. Heck, there's big limbs still hanging in most of the bigger trees around here from Charlie. And that was 4-1/2 years ago!

cool looking tree - you going to euthanize, drill and cable to try and save it, or let it die a natural death by disease and bugs?

That's a nice tree, I'd try and save it (drill and cable routine). That pasture wouldn't look the same without it.

Probably just let it die in peace. Yea, I'll miss it, but it's kinda hollow, (that pic didn't come out) and I don't think the cable would extend the life many years. I also have other large oaks on the place. Maybe I'll get a chance to get some pics of them one day.

I had a goodly sized oak come down a number of years ago and all I can say is that when it does come down, you'll have a bunch of work ahead of you. It took me almost 3 weeks of cutting and burning to get rid of my sucker. Strange, it must be a sign of the times, but I couldn't give it away. There was one guy who would cart it off if I cut it and split it for him. I thought that was pretty big hearted of him.

What are you going to do with it when it bites the dust?

Probably burn it, right on top of the stump. I don't think "THE CLAW" will have much trouble piling the limbs once I cut them off the trunk.
We had one this size, maybe bigger, fall in my dad's yard several years ago. Yep, took a while getting it out of the yard.
