SEATTLE—Starbucks Corp. has laid off 220 employees who worked in field operations and at the coffee retailer's headquarters in Seattle. It will leave about 380 open jobs unfilled.
Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Schultz announced the 600 job cuts Thursday in an e-mail to the company's more than 170,000 employees.
Saturbucks says most of the laid-off employees worked in the U.S. None are baristas or store managers.
Starbucks, which has been struggling amid a faltering economy, its own rapid growth and increased competition, also is realigning its U.S. field operations.
The company's East and West divisions will be replaced by four new ones: Western/Pacific, Northwest/Mountain, Southeast/Plains and Northeast/Atlantic.
