Storing the RTV

Where do you store yours? Any particular benefits or problems you've found in your normal parking spot?

Mine gets stored in one of my buildings. It can no longer fit in a standard car garage door due to height. I used to have a strobe light on top but ripped it off pulling in a different building that didn't have a high enough door. Oops. A little solder and it'll be back in action.

Mine is in an unheated area which causes some issues in the winter. Block heaters are a big help. Another thing I watch is freezing in the undercarriage. It's not unusual for me to have to drive through freezing water then park in an even colder building. I've been careful so it hasn't happened yet, but I've frozen my ATV's so much that the whole underside looks like a block of ice and won't even move until you get the ice off the drivetrain and brakes. If a freezing condition appears likely, I pull it into the heated part of the building (the shop) for the evening.

I have a cat that comes through my buildings at night so I haven't had any issues with mice or whatever chewing on wires and such (as far as I know...).

I store myrtv 900 in my unheated pole barn. Last winter was my first one of ownership,it gets pretty cold here in michigan, but no hard starting issues, and I plow snow with it also.Ialso use stanadyne pf and primrose 405 diesel addtives in case of gelling issues.coobie

Bump.

Coobie and I are the only ones that store our RTV? I don't think bordercollie ever gets off the RTV so no storage is necessary but what about the rest of you?

I ask because I'm wondering about rusting and such. A lot of the RTV's I see on e-bay have rust everywhere and the engine looks terrible.
Here's an example.

This one is a 2006 model and there's rust everywhere.

Mine is a 2004 and probably has less rust than my 2005 truck.

Two Guns RTV stays in a unheated metal building that was built just for the unit .. We don't get really bad freeze down here in the south. I also have a commercial car cover, that I keep on the RTV when parked.... Just a extra plus to help take care of it. As far as mice, rats, & other varmints, Lazy shop cat & Winchester takes care of that !!!! I keep " Son of a Gun " protectant sprayed all the time on the machine. Top, Inside, & bottom >>>>> Not only does it help the looks, but mud & dirt just fall off of it when hit with the water hose.

From the looks of the picture, it seems that someone applied some aluminum acid cleaner, easy-off oven cleaner, or some very harsh cleaner in the engine compartment. That stuff will make something rust bad.....

And I do believe, if you take half-way care of anything, it will not look like that picture. That is from someone who don't care about his equipment. That is just crazy for someone letting this happen to a perfectly good machine. All it takes is very little time to take care of something >>>>>>
Brain,I use my RTV about every other day summer and winter.Ihave boughta product called fluid film to keep the rust off,it comes in gallons or spray form. This will be the first winter with trying it,I bought 2 gal. and just finished brushing the under carriage. The fluid film is very thick so I am trying to find a good air compressor sprayer to apply it withbetter.coobie PS,I just looked at that 2006 on Ebay that puppy is very rough,my 2006 does not have any rust,of course I am pretty anal about keeping mine clean[:D]

The RTV 900 in the photo was a rental/purchase unit. No owner pride / care involved in this unit. 503hrs. Use abuse and drop off at dealer! Frank

coobie

Thanks for the information, I just might give this stuff a try ~~~~ Can't Hurt ~~~~ For this is a investment I would like to take care of !!!!

mine is stored in an unheated building also. aside from longer glow
plug cycle on real cold days it does fine. my fuel is always treated
for winter in my 300 gal tank so i don't do anything specific to rtv.
my case backhoe that sits outside always gets at least 5 gal. of
kerosene so it will start and keep running for snow removal. fluid film
works great for snow plows and anything that sits out in the
weather. Bill

How often do you have to apply this Fluid Film, what I'm really asking is, do I have to apply it after everytime I wash off my RTV from coming out of the muddy woods, or does it last awhile ?

Coobie,
This will be my first winter with my RTV 900. I also have a snowplow with mine and I am wondering how well these things push snow. I plan on using mine to clean a paved lot throughout the winter.
We live on a private road, gravel(self maintained)and I plowed about 1/2 mile out to the main road.I can say the RTV never had a problem pushing some pretty big snow drifts,it plowed very well. You should not have any problems snowplowing on pavement.coobie
