Think we A'skert 'em off????

Hey Junk

Lay off the BBQ and get with the OATMEAL :pat: :pat:

You'll feel like a new man in no time. You won't like the new man, but you will feel like one. :yum: :yum:

I'm not like'n the old man very much right now. He's been makin' me a feelin' a might poorly of late. My wife had surgery back in December and I wasn't about to worry her with knowing I wasn't doing well. So I did what any man would do.... I hid it and acted like I was feeling just fine. And to top it all off, I let her know last night what I'd done. :shitHitsFan:

So, the doctor about ripped my head off, The wife finished that job, and all 3 of my kids have left messages on my voice mail today threatening to kill me if I didn't quit trying to do that very same thing my own self. :pat:

FWJ, my doctor told me a few years back how to lay off the food that is essentially bad for ya. He explained it quite well actually. He told me to take a small bite, see if it tasted good. If it did it was to be considered bad for my health. :yum:

Sorta the reverse of what the doctor explained to me yesterday. His theory is, if you had a hard time getting your kids to eat it when they were little, it's good for you and safe to eat:rolleyes:

I spent a few minutes browsing through the "don't eat/safe to eat" list in my dietary restrictions while I was supposed to be working today. :hide: I wqas suprised to find a few things I really do LIKE on the OK side of the ledger. I've always been an ice cream fanatic. Of course, ice cream is a NO NO. But, ICE MILK and SHERBERTS are OK if consumed in moderation (Moderation being the key)

I was also told to follow the "white rule". "If it's white, it ain't right" (ie most breads, pastas, potatoes, white rice, whole milk, ect)

One of the real killers is going to be nuts. I LOVE walnuts cashews and pecans. Near the top of the NO list.

This isn't going to be fun at all:eek:

Sounds like just about all that's left is Carrots, peas, lettuce, and all those other things.

you gonna share that "no sugar" KC style BBQ sauce recipe?:tiphat:

my dad was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006 and didn't bother doing anything about it until he got blind enough from diabetic cataracts that he couldn't see to play video games. Now that he's on meds, he's doing MUCH better, though. (well, that and the bilateral cataract surgeries):pat:

and I don't hold the forecast against you - we got pretty much what I was expecting here THIS time, but the way patterns evolve around the flint hills & Kansas river, we can have totally different weather between me and my closest neighbor in any given storm! (like one storm when we lost trees and had flooding and she only got sprinkles 1/2 mile away):letitsnow:

Erik:

This is my version of Kansas City Style Sauce. My friends like it. You need to adjust your own "heat". I left the rub mix out. If interested let me know. Everyone seems to have their own "best" rub mix  . I like all of them
Kansas City Style Sauce
“Ketchup” makes around 1 Cup:

1- 8 ounce can of tomato sauce
¾ Cup of tomato paste
2 TBspns Splenda
2 tsps onion powder
2 tsps light soy sauce
1/3 tsp ground allspice
1.5 TBspns malt vinegar

Sauce:

Sauté the following until tender:
2 TBspns smart balance, or butter, or canola oil (calories are all the same)
½ Cup of finely chopped celery
3 TBspns finely chopped onion
Your choice of garlic clove #’s
Your choice of hot peppers (I like Habaneros) and #’s

Add:

“ketchup”
2 TBspns fresh lemon juice
2 TBspns cider vinegar
1+ Tbspn of Worcester sauce
1 tsp dry mustard
Fresh ground black pepper

When I am in a rush and/or am making a “dedicated” BBQ sauce I sauté the veggies, adding the liquid ingredients as the sauté finishes up and then throw in all the other stuff.

Simmer the mixture for ~ 15 minutes covered under low heat and let cool.

Farmwithjunk:

I can definitely relate :respect: . I have had a long, long history of putting everyone else first as well as working, playing, and partying too hard. I also always toughed everything out, never complained, always under-reported my situation, and never, never asked for any help from anyone. It finally caught up with me big time :shitHitsFan: . Now I literally have a cast of 100's "supervising" my activities, but not before each and everyone of them took my head off for my poor judgement . As to your dietary restrictions I suggest you look into the "South Beach Diet" materials. With little modification it can be adjusted to a diabetic diet (and allow you nuts). I have a diabetic specialist NP dietician who is following me weekly as to my management of my diabetes which is definitely a challenge with all the Prednisone I have been on. The dietician has been pretty comfortable with my food management. You need some dietary guidance, but you should be able to work some of your desired foods in once in a while  . Hang in there. Jay

Update on the sugar level. Tested as soon as I got home. 168. Down Down 217 points since yesterday afternoon. Not "cured" by any stretch, but positive steps in short order. Best part is, I FEEL better. A LOT better. Meds are doing their job with (so far) no noticable side effects.

Just imagine if you will. Ol' Dougster had his hands full with a tired, sickly, weak old man. Soon, he'll be a'messin' with a spry, healthy, tough YOUNG man:yankchain: :smartass:

Poor boy ain't gonna have a chance:forgetit: :yum: :yum: :yum:

It had better snow then:letitsnow: Dougster is going to need all his strength, and there is no way he is going to be at his peak living on gruel and:starbucks: .

Where is the Old guy anyway. He hasn't been around all day. Maybe he is sitting in his truck waiting for the snow to start. :letitsnow:

I lay out a few Dougster treats, he'll come a running:starbucks: :starbucks: :starbucks: :starbucks:

FWJ,
One thing I learned two years ago when Dad was told he had high blood sugar count is that the levels can vary widely from just one meal to the next.
Listen to the wife and kids:cool:.............they are the best sounding board you have and they can actually hit your when you mess up.:bash:

The old Dougster was at Conex Connecticut all day... same construction equipment & services show as held in Boston two weeks ago only mucho bigger and better. And yes, John Deere equipment was on display at this show (including a new JD 110 and 410J).

Only downside: I had to look out at an awfully funny looking steel skeleton of a building across the way. Now who the heck would build a silly looking building like that???

I can see that Junk is almost back to his usual crotchety, crusty, half-delusional, trouble-making self! That's a very good sign. :D

Poor old Junk. :o Nuthin' but rabbit food... and hold the salt and butter! :(

If it helps, I should probably send Junk my famous recipe for Dougster's Gruel. :)

Don't know if that's on his diet plan or not.

Jeez Dougster... all you have to do is read my bio to know that I have 5dogs.
Oh, I know that Kid! :thumb: The old member was just taking a little poetic license with that post! ;)
It is not a flaw.:soapbox: My small hands get called upon often at work to reach into small holes and start a nut or screw. Funny thing, at work using my pneumatic drill and rivet gun, I squeeze the trigger with my middle finger.:thumb: I tried to do that on the Kimber, but the slide is vicious and I don't want to get bit.
hugs, Brandi
Yikes!!! That would be a good way to lose that undersized trigger finger altogether!!!
keep it up dougster and you may find the difference between a short trigger finger and a hair trigger! (which must not be too short or she wouldn't be able to put that kind of pattern on paper!)
I think the non-infamous diminutive trigger finger is just an excuse for not shooting an even tighter group!!! By Texas Tractor Drivin' Lady's Club standards, that was actually kinda sloppy shootin'!!! :yum:

Dougster, at $1.67/hr, are you using the excuse that it is cheaper just staying home?:poke: OOPS...:sorry: (Old Member)
Actually, the correct figure is $1.57 (net) per working hour. :(

Jay, Glad to hear you are back. The Dougster was getting a little rowdy. WOW, just 1.3 miles? Is that a typo? I work 62 miles from home and just last fall turned down a cushy day job just 5 miles from the house.
hugs, Brandi
That is a correct figure... 1.3 miles. Amazing to be sure... but I can even beat that now. I work a mere 33 steps from my bedroom! :)
Well, I am glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that. That would have been a mess. That puts you up to a hoot and a half today.
hugs, Brandi
I'm sure there is hope that one day your trigger finger will achieve pistol shooting greatness. I just hope I'm not on the business end of that Kimber thang when it happens! :)

This reminds me of that pathetic incident recently wherein I tried to save a few bucks by combining two doctor visits into one... but that meant going about week without my HBP pills. Well, my BP skyrocketed without the meds and I ended up in an emergency doctor visit being told I had to go immediately to the hospital and check in overnight. I refused, of course (dirt poverty... remember?). Doc made me sign a release and gave me my pills. I was fine again within hours of restarting the meds.

Dougster :starbucks:

Ya know Doug I'd bet a dollar against a donut you would never run your tractor low on oil, yet you run yourself low on meds. You know what it would do to the tractor. Now you know what it does to you.

 You didn't substitute :starbucks: did you? :yankchain:

Some of mine got "lost" in the mail over the holidays. After two trips to the VA and post office and back the VA refilled them. The USPS only had records of them getting to the local PO. One was signature confirmation and one was delivery confirmation. VA meds have distinctive packaging. Temporary holiday help? Last year (holidays) they were two weeks late.

I had to buy a watch with 5 alarms on it to help me keep track of mine. I have 3 I take every 6 hrs, 1 every 8 hrs, 1 every 12 hrs, and one every 24 hrs (and 1 30 mins before the doorbell rings :yum: ). Thank goodness there is no diabetes in my family but my brother and I both have back problems.

Hey Jay that looks like a big green egg.  Did you ever see Caveman with Ringo Starr and Dennis Quaid? Watch out for whatever laid that thing. :yum: They cook good don't they? I think they were invented in Korea eons ago.

Ted

Nope... wouldn't let the Mahindra run low on oil or grease or anything else... but my "incident" seemed different (and an obvious opportunity to save a $15.00 doctor visit co-pay fee).

I mean, think about it: Two primary doctor visit appointments ~1 week apart. First one to check on and renew HBP meds. Second one to review facial pain caused (apparently) by 3 recent (and rather dubious/painful) root canals. Just waiting for the dental x-rays to be released and forwarded for the latter visit. I decided to combine them... a very logical cost-saving move. Only problem: I was just about out of my old HBP meds and Doc wouldn't renew the prescription by phone before the HBP check-up visit. In fact, because that HBP med renew visit had already been delayed previously, I was even out of my "emergency" back-up supply.

One other fact: I had gone off my HBP meds previously for up to 3 days without serious ill effects. Further, I have been known to stretch those meds with reduced doses when there was no money for the refills... again, with no ill effects. In fact, at times I have felt better off the pills than on them. :o I figured going a week pill-free would be possible... no big deal.

But this time was different. It was a stressful time and my weight was at an all-time high. Probably NOT the best time to try this experiment. I ended up with super-high BP, blurred eyes, a killer headache and was barely able to drive. Doc said I was ready to stroke when he saw me (hence the demand that I go straight to the hospital). I knew I just needed the damn pills... which he finally gave me after making me sign the responsibility release. :o

So I didn't save the $15.00. :( But at least I did recover. :)

Yes it is a BGE. I was a 20+ year Weber man until wifey bought me this unit for the holidays last rear. I still have two functional webers for "overflow cooking/grilling/"hot smoking". I usually use the webers just to fire up the charcoal chimney for the BGE now. I really like the BGE and I use it uear round regardless of the weather:chef:. I love its operational and controllable temperatures- ~140* through ~700+* . Jay

I was quietly relaxing (which is hard) reading these posts  and drinking my fuu-fuu :starbucks: until now  ! Dougster if you do not start taking care of your body- your body will start to take care of you and trust me it is not pleasant and I speak from surreal, but real current life experience. I worked with too many stroke victims to wish that on anyone. There is also a direct correlation between weight and BP higher weight usually raises BP. Does GF know about all this? Weather report delayed- I need to check my own BP right now. Jay :letitsnow:

Farmwithjunk:

How are your sugars today? Sugars will fluctuate throughout the day and can be influenced by a variety of factors including prescribed medications. I am glad that you can take a pill form medication without side effect challenges. I was stabilized on oral form until I got sick again now I am back to testing 6X per day, orals, and injections again. I log in all my daily vital sign data as well as my calorie and carbohydrate-gram count intake for all the doctors scrutinizing my care which is keeping me out of the hospital. Jay

Well, it's easy to look back at it now and understand in retrospect how stupid it was to cancel that first scheduled visit. But at the time it seemed like a perfectly logical and reasonable way to save $15.00... which is a lot of money to a guy laid-off and more-or-less incomeless for well over a year at that point and facing other staggering medical and dental costs to get everything tooth/teeth/pain-related back on track.

Remember that my nurse GF had seen me do this "suspended med/reduced dose" thing before with essentially zero ill effects... so she was not all that concerned. This time, however, the result was very different. :o I have since ordered a huge supply of back-up pills and vow that this will never happen again... regardless of my bullheaded stubbornness and/or the similar bullheaded stubbornness of my doctor. :o

Brandi:

Not a typo. I live just 1.3 miles from the Academy at Swift River, a college preparatory coed therapeutic boarding school :pat: . I also get free meals there (and a lot of intertainment from the kiddies) . I have driven both of my tractors to work when I till the School's rather extensive garden areas  . I almost walked there once, but I did not have the "character" to turn down an offered ride from one of my colleagues  . I just hope I can return to this job once I get better as I really enjoy working there- it appears that something in the work environment is triggering this respiratory issue that I currently am dealing with  .
