tires for Christmas

Thanks tailrotor for the advice on the tires and wheels. I know I have sure been enjoying the Kubota rtv. Here is a pic of what it looked like when I first got it and a pic of the Polaris that I traded in on the rtv.

Thrunderdome your welcome, looks about like mine when I first got it then I started installing all the goodies that night. It's amazing how the wheels and tires, lights transform them into what they look like now.

Great!! Great machines.

I think you will like the evolutions brookshire. I sure like mine. I hear the grims are good too chickenfarmer:tiphat: collie
edit.. I just hate stumps and those pieces of stubs the bush hog leaves... They have gotten me 2x !!

Ahhhhhhhh Someone got them a set of reapers.I can spot them a mile away.I know you will love them!

So far so good, the night a got them a few calves got out into the wrong pasture. I had to chase them through a mudhole around a hay rack and back into the correct pasture. The tires did great in 2wd, I have chased cows in the same area with the older tires and always got stuck

Rather than start a new thread:

I now need new tires for my RTV. One has some wear on the tread and another has multiple thorn and rock holes kept together with copious amounts of tire slime. All are seriously age-checked.

Would the GBC Grim Reaper 26x12x12 fit on my RTV 900? The specs call for 25x10-12 or 25x11-12.

Thanks,

FTG, what kind of tread are you looking for? I have the Blackwater Evolutions . The tread is deep and is lasting and lasting. I have the 26" the width is 9 in front and 11 in back.
I have heard lots of good comments on the Grimreapers but have never owned them. Also check out the sticky for great tire information.
edit: these tires have between 1500 and 2000 hrs- well maybe near 1800.. on them !

I'm looking mainly for the 8 ply rating i.e. hopefully the toughest tire out there. I have Carlisle AT489s right now and I think they are only 3 ply. They are shot, age checked and I have one that has about half the tread gone.

With the 8 ply, I *should* get a better load rating as well. As far as tread pattern, the Grim Reapers looks as good as any other that I can tell.

It looks like I'll have to go with 26x10-12 in the front for clearance and rubbing issues; and 26x12-12 in the back. I've heard a lot of bad things about lifting RTVs and going with 27" tall tires. With 26x10 and 26x12, I can still use the same wheels - hopefully.

I plan to go to my local tire dealer later this afternoon. I'll see what kind of price he can get me.

Thanks,

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought you should only go 1" narrower or wider than the rim. Going beyond that can cause issues since the tire can't stretch or shrink properly to the rim.

The OEM rims are 10x12 so I "think" you should be sticking with 9x12, 10x12 or 11x12. Ask your tire dealer about that.

So you could go with
taller tires with
26x9x12
26x10x12
26x11x12
or
standard height tires with
25x9x12
25x10x12
25x11x12

Good point but I misspoke earlier: there are other tires sizes listed for the Worksite including 25x11-12 (rear only). The regular RTV 900XT General Purpose lists tires sized up to 25x12-12 Turf tires, front and rear.

So I think I'm OK on the x12 width. But I do plan to ask at the tire dealer and see what he says. I trust him to give me good info even if it costs him money.

Thanks,

ETA: Does anyone know what "HDWS" mean? Heavy Duty White Sidewall????

All of my 2004 OEM tires (all the same size) are doing just fine approaching 2.200 hours. If I outlive them, I'll get more just like them.

The evolutions are 8 ply and hard rubber so the side walls hold up well. It is hard to tell if they are low.. but yes, you can tell if they are flat .. never had that happen yet and ...no slime.. :) Just to add information not to push them.

Good to check with your tire guy.

The "General Purpose lists tires sized up to 25x12-12". When it says "up to", that may mean different rims to match those wider tires. The General Purpose is a bit different machine than the rest of the RTV's.

HDWS = Heavy Duty Work Site

Well that didn't go the way I expected......

He didn't recognize the GBC name since his distributor doesn't carry them. He looked up the tire sizes I wanted and there was not much available from his distributor, most of them were Carlisles - do not want, and I told him why.

Then he asked why I wanted to replace them. I told them that one had a slow leak - he handed me a bottle of slime-equivalent. I told him about the age checking - he said "so what?, it's an ATV tire not a Daytona 500 race tire".

Then he said that he would be happy to order me the tires at the same place I probably would end buying them (off the internet) and mount them for $6 each, but unless I just really really needed to spend +$500 right now, why not just go with what's on there until they fail or don't do what you want them to do i.e. won't make it up my hills.

Couldn't really fault that logic, especially since I gotta move my son again this saturday plus it looks like it's ACL surgery time for my older dog......

Having said all that, based on another thread here, I found out about STI Rocktane tires in 26x11-12. What I like about these tires is that they are 8 ply (like the Grim Reapers) and have a 996 lb load rating, which is substantially higher than most other UTV tires, even the GRs. They are also non-directional.

Comments/suggestions?

Those tires look a lot like the Maxxis Bighorn's which is what I have been running for years with zero complaints.

Did you get a chance to talk with him about the width? Can you safely put a 12" on a 10" rim?

As for running with leaky, dry rotted tires, I'd think about chancing it if I lived on flat ground. When running on the steep hills I have (and especially when hauling a heavy load of firewood), a tire failure, especially on the down-hill side of the vehicle could end up being a catastrophe. I'm tippy at times on 4 good tires. If one blows, it may be enough to lay the RTV on it's side or worse yet, tumble down the hill.
