Transmission drain plug

I was trying to do my 50 hour service on my RTV 1100 and I ran into a problem with getting the drain plug out of the transmission. What size of allen wrench fits it. I tried a 10 mm and a 3/8 size and they seem a little loose. The drain plug seems to be on there real tight and I don't want to strip it. I have a parts and work shop manual but they do not tell the size. I tried a search through this site but have not come up with any answer. Before I break something, I would like to have the proper size wrench. Thanks</p>

Hmmm! That's interesting...The drain plug on the transmission of a 900 is a 6 sided standard plug that takes a socket (at least the one on my 900). Wonder why they went to an allen???</p>
 
The drain plug on the rtv 900 is hex shaped with a magnet on the inside end and located on the bottom of the trans. If you get under it , look for a hole in the flat plate under the transmission { in between the two rear wheels). There is a slightly sloped plate in front of it. The plug is up in this "hole" and you can feel it with your finger . You should get about 2.6 gallons of trans fluid out of it. Be sure to not operate right after changing the fluid because it could damage the transmission. Could you possibly be looking at the side of the transmission on that allen plug?? It seems like I remember running my speedometer attachment cable thru one of the allen plug takeouts but that was over 4 yrs ago. Good luck and let us know if we can help. Bordercollie</p>
 
I just saw that you have an 1100. I have a 900 (2005) so my info pertains to my type of unit . Good luck figuring it out. If it is an allen type, see if there is anything in the cavity preventing good contact, sometimes a slight tap of a hammer will help snug an allen wrench up. Good Luck. Bordercollie</p>
 
The plug I am trying to unscrew is on the bottom in the plate you mentioned in that hole you talked about. I didn't check to see if there is a hex shape to the allen screw but will tomorrow.</p>


The picture in the workshop manual shows a allen screw only but does not tell the size of if or if it's metric or inch.</p>


I guess I might need someone with a RTV 1100 to chime in.</p>

It will most likely be a 12mm allen. my 900 is a hex plug as well. Every allen bolt I encounter on mine is metric. make sure you get a good set of metric allen as they make the bolts ungodly tight at the factory. I had to use a chisel on the head to break the rear guard button head bolts loose. Replaced them with hex head bolts.</p>
 
Thanks muleman, that explains why it felt loose with the 10 mm. I didn't want to really beat on it until I knew I had the right size. the largest size I had was 10mm. Off to the store now.</p>

After looking at the drain plug and calling my dealer, I found out that is was indeed a10 mm drain plug. I took off the cover and checked it out closely and after cleaning out the dirt in the allen screw ,the allen wrench fit a lot tighter. It took quite a bit of force to break it, two foot extension, but once it was loose, it came off easy.</p>
