Transmission filter replacement

I would like to know if I have to drain the HST oil if I am going to only replace filters. I am not sure if I can get by just replacing the filters without making to much of a mess. Thanks.

a mess can easily be cleaned up but replaceing a machine because of not doing a full fluid and filter change will cost you more so your gonna have to think of how much is a little bit of soap and elbo grease worth rather than a new tranny?

The transmission plug has a magnet on the end of it and you would be surprised at the tiny amounts of metal that collect on it. I had just put new filters and fluid in my RTV 900 for maybe a week or 2 when the rear u joints went out. Maybe it was 25 hrs or so on that change. I cleaned the drain area and washed my machine real good then drained the trans fluid into a clean container. I let it set for days while I worked on getting the axles out of the bumper and when I did pour it up, there were ever so minute evidence of metal in the bottom of the container- like a tiny trace amount of graphite . It's always important to change it at the same time.I don't change mine as often as recommended but do change it a couple or 3 times a year. I have 3923 hrs on my machine. bordercollie

On my new 1100 they just say replace filters now at 50 hours.....I did not loose much but about maybe a pint....my old 900 was fluid and filters at 50 hours....look at your manual as they have changed that on there RTV.
Always wondered why u needed to replace the fluid so soon as it goes threw the filter first before it is used....why there is no screen to clean.
I have to look again but think it was either 200 or 300 hours or even more before you had to change the fluid on my 1100.

You did not say what you was working on though is why I said do as your manual says.

I dug it out on my 1100 says change tranny oil first time at 400 hours....which would be at your 3rd filter replace.
I'll do mine at 200 if I live that long.......lol

Wil have to get my manual back !!!!

But, I would have to bet, The RTV 900 manual said on our machine, to change both engine and transmission fluid and filters at the first 50 hrs.

*** Then, change only the engine oil and filter at every 100 hrs.

*** Change the transmission FLUID & FILTERS every 200 hours

Now that is on the 900 series units four years ago.

*** My owners manual is still in Mississippi with much of my paperwork. Have not finished bringing back from safe keeping of the water situation here. That is about all left I have to bring back to the shop , and I hate moving filing cabnets !!!!

Would another member please take a look at their manual and see exactly what it states.

THANKS MUCH !!!!

Engine oil and filter first 50 hrs. then engine oil every 100 hrs and filter and oil every 200 hrs.
transmission oil and filter change first 50. Then both filters and fluid every 200 hrs. **For the small price of an oil filter which is less than $10 , I change both the oil and filter at the same time. bordercollie

it's best to change all the filters and fuids as soon as possible right after breakin.when they assemble these things just like all other engines and trans there is still some milling shavings in those parts and while breaking the engine in it shaves parts also so that they all fit together. this is where you get your dirtiest oil and fuids that come out the engine/trans.i don't think i would let the fluid change go to 200 hours even if they say so. you could just change the filter and run the fluids through a few coffee filters and reuse it but if it was me i would just change it and go with new fluids and filters. i also think it really depends on how hard you worked the rtv for them 200 hours. putt/putting around isn't as bad as workin the rtv really hard for them hours.
