Winch mounting?

I went to Tractor Supply and got their Champion 3000 lb winch that is on sale this weekend for $79.00. I have been reading all i can on winches since this is my first and i have seen that there are mounting kits but i don't see a reason to buy one at least for my application and i don't know what they look like. I opened the hood lifted the lid and everything sits down into the spot for the winch but i will need to drill two holes in the RTV to secure the winch since none of the holes there come close to lining up, the winch itself has two holes in it's body to secure it so they must figure two will be all that is needed. Am i missing anything?:hide:

What ever you use to attach it remember that you will be putting a lot of stress on the bolts and use good grade 5 or 8 bolts. The RTV is heavy to begin with and if you have a load in the bed you may exceed the capacity of that winch. A good heavy power supply cable is important to get enough juice to the winch.

No winch is meant to be mounted with just 2 bolts, more usual to have 4 bolts. Look again to be sure. A 3,000lb capacity winch will rip itself off the mount with two.
:pat:

Been installing it this morning and i i have drilled it out to 3\8 and have used grade 8 bolts and there are only two bolts in the winch frame but the plate that goes under the winch that holds the rollers i was able to put one more bolt in it to help, how many amps will this thing pull, would like to put a breaker in line.

Did your winch include a contactor?

Like this one?

Also I'm not sure which RTV you have but on my 500 the winch was bolted down with 4 bolts, 2 doesn't seem like enough to me.

Gotcha, I think any fuse or breaker large enough to handle the load of that winch is going to be huge to the point it's not likely to trip anyway. You might want to install a switch that allows you to cut power to your winch when it's not in use....if you have any type of melt down on the winch it could be a huge asset, it will also prevent having something bump your winch switch and ruin your winch or fairlead.

Something like this one

Not sure which model you have, but here is one of their sites with manuals, just pick the winch model and got to the manual page.

Looking at a couple of manuals it easy to see why you pay so much more for a good Warn.

But at the price you paid you can afford to toast a few.
