Any suggestions on the best wiring setup for one of these roof mounted spotlights for the RTV 1100? I was thinking maybe an easy to access ignition gated circuit would be the best, but any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Brian.

Brian,

Are you asking ways to get wiring to the roof area or options on wiring it?

It's been a few years but as I recall, I just tapped into a hot wire block that I already had in the ceiling/roof area. That wire block was on a fuse but the GoLight has it's own fuses.

I see the remote pictured. You'll like that. Where's the hard-wired control? Hope you got one but it's just not in the pic.

BTW, be careful with your mounting location if you plan on fitting in a standard 6'6" garage door ever again.

What I'm asking is where is the best place to tap into the ignition protected power? I hoped maybe someone knew of a factory circuit powered on only when the ignition switch was on that could be easily tapped into. I can figure out several options for near direct or direct connections to the battery, but wanted to avoid that option to keep one of the monkeys I have around here from accidently turning on the light and running down the battery.

I want to mount on the rooftop. Unfortunately as you point out, mine won't fit in the garage when mounted in that location. The other option was to mount on a bracket in front of the cab roof just above the windshield, but I'd have to give up the full 370 degree rotation of the light beam in that location. I decided since the light can be easily removed from its mounting bracket with the removal of one screw, I'd connect the light to the power wires using male/female plugs for easy disconnect.

Thanks.

those are some nice lights.how far away will the remote work the light?thats pretty nice if your workin in front or rear of the rtv and need to move the light just hit the button and walla it goes where you need it.

Fused Taps

A little searching turned up these fused fuse box taps. They come in 10, 15, and 20 amp versions. Replace standard fuse in ignition hot slot with one of these (www.accessafuse.com). Will let you know how it turns out. Brian.

How old are your monkeys? I really wanted to have the light not keyed because there's a lot of uses for it when the engine isn't running (or the key on, clicking on the hour meter).
I trained my monkeys to keep their hands off. My light controls are near/on the ceiling so it wasn't too hard since the hard to train (small) monkeys couldn't reach it easily.

Which mount did you get? IIRC, there's a magnetic mount version. If you got that one, you could just screw a 8" square piece of steel to your roof and stick it to that. At the end of the day, you slide it off the roof and stick it to your rear cage. A small tether from the light to the roof will keep it from hitting the bed should it slide off the cage (or snag a branch or whatever). I had some strobe lights and I used that approach. Worked well, and knock on wood, the light slid nicely off the metal roof plate when I forgot they were up there and pulled into the garage.

I actually order one of these as well. It arrives today. Planning on mounting it on the roof. Decided not to key it and will leave it hot all the time. Let me know how your install goes.

My monkeys are all teenagers. While they have been trained, trained again, and retrained, they are still teenagers. They occasionally leave things on they have been trained to turn off or leave things out they have been trained to put away. Minimizing the possibility for mishap has served me well over the years.

As far as using the light without the iginition on or the engine running, I probably wouldn't be comfortable doing something like that for more than 10-15 minutes tops. And even then, I'd probably rather run the engine for that 10-15 minutes when operating something like a spotlight. Furthermore, if I were doing a job that required lighting for significantly longer, I'd either do it during the day or probably run a generator.

I'll post a pic or two when the installation is done.
