I'v e had this one since it was new in 2004. It just seems to have very limited power when backing up steep hills on dirt. Is this normal? Been kinda agravating and have to think twice when working on hillsides. I tried each reverse combo 2wd,4wd, posi = same deal engine winds up and wheels don 't even spin. Fine in all other respects and well maintained so Any clues?

First off good pic. :thumb: Beautiful country and very nice looking decked out RTV!

So, I think you are saying you do not have this issue when going forward up the hills, only when stopping on your way down and needing to go back up the hill in reverse. Is that correct? Interesting ....and I have no cure, just trying to be sure I understood the question.

Doc, You are correct. Trying to backup even a 20% slope from stopped is "iffy". On dry pavement it does ok in reverse but on loose soil its another matter. Its like the trans is spinning freely with no power to wheels. The 6000# warn winch has been used more than once to get me out of predicaments where i could not backup.

Thanks for complements but all the mods on the RTV were easy and necessary. The Bed liner reduces sound to under 75dB and save the bed, The bumpers (Ft and rear) protech the undercarriage and provide mounts for 2x2 attachments. The diamond plate covers and real chain tailgate "chains" were needed to actually do the work expected from this vehicle/ SOme more mod pics if interested. All are "one hand" fab'd from scrap trailer steel, leftover syn decking and donations recycled from defunct dotcom companies.

Nice looking ride. Let's talk about your add-ons in another thread so they don't get lost here.

Here's something that can help (well, it won't fix it but it'll help you know where the RTV stands).

Take a 4x4 or 6x6 and lay it on the ground. Back up to it until the rear tires touch. Now, try to back up/climb over it. Normally, it'll climb over it if you have it in 2wd without diff lock. Try again with diff lock (2wd). Try again in 4wd.

Basically, the more tires you try to spin to get over it, the less likely it's doing to do so.

Looking at your pics, your machine is running a bit heavier than a stock unit. That may cause some issues as well.

I'll try it tomorrow. The backup problems have been same since way before mods. Its really not serious so far but an irritant.

It's been so long that I forgot. Maybe BC can recall how I changed the settings on the injector pump. I can't remember and the pump on my RTV1100 is completely different.

By the time I got rid of my RTV900 it would pretty easily run 30 mph and seemed to have twice the power it had when I bought it. I think about half of the difference was tinkering with the pump and the other half was breaking it in. I had one of the first production units that was horrible about sticking in gear. It was standard operating procedure to have to shut it off to get it out of gear. Kubota was no help on my machine. On newer machines they made changes but never helped original owners like me. I still have a burr in my rear about Kubota for doing that.

After having to shut it off a dozen or two times in a day to get it out of gear I generally ran the dog piss out of it. I not only ran it like I stole it, I ran it like I was pissed at it! As far as I was concerned, there was no variable throttle; it was either on the floor or my foot was off of it. :tiphat: Strangely enough, after a couple dozen hours of doing that, it became considerably more snappy. When I first got mine, if I were sitting still it wouldn't climb over a bump as big as my pecker!:wave: Spinning the tires when climbing a hill was flat out of the question, especially when I added more aggressive tires. BTW, I still have those tires, Maxxis Bighorns, and I love those tires. I've noticed that a lot of machines come with them from the factory now.

Anyway, maybe BC will recall which direction I turned which screw on the pump. Otherwise, run the piss out of it every time you take off. No kidding. It made a huge difference in mine. Good luck!

Dang Brent, you made me dig pretty deep to find it. Not sure if you keep your e-mails but you sent it to me between January and March 2007.

Here's your notes (and you were going from memory so it may not be perfectly accurate):
On the rear of the injector pump, there's a cover with tamper proof caps over the nuts.
Remove the caps and take the nuts off.
Inside, there are 2 adjustment screws (or bolts?).
I "think" you turn the lower one in about 3/4 of a turn. Play around with them but remember (better yet, write down) the initial settings so you can revert back if/as necessary.

I remember when I switched to the high-rise air cleaner, my power went up considerably, so maybe that would help. It also keeps the dust from being a problem as the air cleaner is away from the bottom of the vehicle.

Do you ever have this problem with same load going forward up the same hill in M? I think the gear ratio for R is about the same as M.

No. Going up a 300' 30% incline with a full load of wet oak, never a problem. Trying to back up a 20% grade empty or full --problem. Been this way since day 1. Wheels won't even turn much less slip if they did. Design problem?

This is a adjustment thing. Need to get a pro Kubota mechanic to take this and set ALL up for you. I know of one down here that acted strangely like that. Would do good in one direction, but was weak as a kittlen in the other. They brought it up to a Kubota mechanic about ninty miles from here. When it returned, it was not only stronger, but strong in BOTH directions !!!!!

And the high rise intake. I'll have to try to find you a picture. But heck yea, it does give you more power and does let your machine breathe better !!!!
