Well starting to build a ballist box for the yanmar.Iam thinking almost to heavy right now for the tractor probley 650-700 lbs and not done.I have about 50-75 lbs to go.I dont want to load the tires i use it to mow.I have no idea how much i need for sure.joe

I'm assuming you want to offset what you're lifting with the loader. What materials are you lifting?
What are you filling the ballast box with? I'd suggest using something that's easy to add and subtract from the box (steel scraps, sand, stone..., not concrete).
I'd go with your current 700# or so (or less), lift the heaviest thing you plan on moving with the loader and see how the back tires feel. Are they lifting? Do you have adequate traction without using 4WD?
I'd think your tractor should handle decent FEL loads without ballast at all.

This tractor is rated to lift 1200 lbs.??With the box on i have lifted a full bucket of gravel and moved it.I do worry about the rear wheels lifting but the biggest reason is to take the weight off the front axle.My box started as a rear scoop bucket then added 4 100 lbs of barbells on a shaft so they dont move. Then a plate across behind the barbells this makes two compartments beside the barbells for chains then chains across the back in rows this gives me room for the chainsaw.I think i have 8 dollars in it everything else i had.LOVE the frontend loader.

I'm missing something. Your front axle is rated to handle whatever load the FEL is rated to handle. If you have 1000 pounds of material in the bucket, adding ballast to the rear would not change the weight on the front axle, but would put a greater overall load on the tractor. At least that is how I see it. What am I missing?

I use my bush hog which only weighs 600 lbs as my ballast. Since it has a rear wheel the rear is not even holding up all the 600 lbs but it still provides enough ballast for lifting the max with my FEL (1100 lbs)

If you have a front end loader on a tractor your front axle is almost maxed out empty.Adding weight to the back will take weight off the front axle.Messiks has many good videos on this subject. He put car scales under each wheel and ck/d weight while adding weight to the bucket.
