Clicking noise in rear wheel / axle

She's at the doctors (aka dealers). I'll let you know when I get the call. I just took her there Saturday after getting more frustrated trying to figure out the problem and not having the time or inkling to tear into it myself. I'd probably screw it up more then take it to the dealer and have an even bigger bill.

I would like to trade for an 1140 or a 940 (if they make one ... a 900 with two rows of seats) ....but I'm sure I cannot afford that. My 25 yr old boat broke and I'm most likely replacing that with a slightly newer 14 year old boat.

I got the call. As yall suspected it is the U Joints. One bad the other not far behind. Getting both replaced with greaseable ones. Hope that helps them last longer.

Be sure to get a written estimate.. That keeps everything friendly.
The greasable ones on my '11 model have 1700 hrs on 'em. :)
Good Luck , collie

To late for the written estimate. Good idea but I've dealt with these guys before. So far they've always been straight with me. I sure hope it stays that way.

How often do you grease em bc?

Well Doc..... The manual says (I think) every 50 hours... I go further.. maybe every 100+ hrs. but only because I use a good synthetic, high pressure and high temperature grease that doesn't not sling out and that can handle moisture.. There are several brands out there...Amsoil, Red Line and Royal Purple. I won't use the cheap generic grease in those joints... they deserve the best and my pocketbook says thanks in the long run.
Greasing them goes so much better if you can jack up the entire rear end and spin the wheels to line up the access hole and grease fitting on the outer joint ...and What about that Doc, the early models don't have that access hole... how will you access the outer joint? I drilled some access holes in my bumper/axle on the '05 when I replaced the old style with greaseable ones... Wonder if they will do that for you?? or maybe you can reach it...but the angle is sure difficult.. anyways, let us know how it goes.. collie

ps somewhere on here there is a thread with a picture showing that access point... hey...here it is http://www.nettractortalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13788&highlight=ujoint&page=4 look at post 54 dated 02 02 2012

Awesome Info. Thanks BC. If you think the angle is difficut, I have no doubt you are right on. I will ck that out. I'm calling them right now. I agree, the best grease is worth the price and your time for not having to grease as often.

They hee hawed when asked. Agreed that the outer joints were hard / impossible to get to . Then said IF the u joints are greaseable we'll address that then. The joints are on order and not in shop yet ...he thought they would be greaseable ...now we'll see. He said he gave me a price break because he thought the prices were to high ....not sure what that had to do with greaseabble or not but will keep you posted.
Thanks again BC. wouldn't do much good to have greaseable joints if you can't get to them. :bonk:

I do think he was shocked I had a clue about that issue. :yum: Ahh the power of forums. :D

On equipment, we use the Amsoil NLGI #2 grease.
That has same us so much $$$$$$$$$$.

Once you get the old grease pumped out, and everything in full of the Amsoil grease. Your greasing is just about over. For we know when one is busting up
fields, that is the hardest on bearing and the disc itself.
And every morning it was the chore of going from alimite to alimite pumping grease into the disc bearing, changing tubes and on and on and on ....
Once we got this grease ALL in there, and there was no other. You can try to get it to take grease, but hardly can even to get to do that. That grease don't go anywhere. IT DON'T BANG OUT !!!!!
It went to replacing six to eight bearing a year in this old disc. To absoluty
NO bearing trouble. On just this disc alone, going on maybe in 7-9 years or so.

It's worth the $$$ .... IT HAS SAVE US BIG BUCKS, TIME , TROUBLE all around.
We went to putting about two or three pumps (hand grease gun) every two or three cuttings on the Zero turn mower. To nothing, tried it yesterday. Wont take any grease at all. That grease don't pound out, it stays right there doing it's job.

........ two guns:wave:

From having the RTV several years now Ive come to the realization on the u joints they would last a long time under normal riding conditions and very light work.
It seems when you plow or drag logs out of the woods and put a real strain on them is what kills them.when i first tore mine up plowing it was with NO weight in the back end for ballast. Now that I add 400 to 500 pounds of weight in the back it decreases the angle and they last a lot longer.I only relpaced 1 joint with a greasable one and only got one season out of it.I went back to the non greasable ones and been fortunat as im on my second season with them and that was plowing, dragging logs out of the woods and pulling dad out of the snow banks all winter.

Thanks Mark. Good info. I'm hauling gravel with mine to various places on my trails. I will have to ensure I do not overload the bed. Easy to do with 2 to 3" gravel.

Hell i always over load mine.It wouldnt know how to act if it wasnt over loaded it keeps them back shafts straighter.Glad you got it fixed. In the future you can easily check them by raising up the back end and spinning the tires and see if they are tight or flop around.Easy repair for a do it your selfer

She's supposed to be ready to pick up at 1pm today. :D I've missed her. Heading out to get the truck and trailer and give my girl a ride home. Can't wait. :D

I got her back. All is good. They said outer joints are simply not greaseable. My mudholes from last year helped cause the issue. They said mud had pushed it's way into the Ujoints and pushed most of the grease out. I have fixed the mud holes so that issue is not an issue any longer.
Just glad to have her back. :D

Glad you got your baby back Doc ! Your post has motivated me.I am going to try and service mine today. collie

Good luck BC. It was sure hot here that day. You had to be sweltering if you got the service done. Hope it went well.

Thanks Doc. I serviced the Kubota zero turn instead. Your post and the talk about grease put the necessity of doing it in my head. The blades were so dull that it was almost embarrassing so I sharpened them and greased everything- good to go now. RTV is next though. You are right though the humidity is something else. :) collie
