Fuel cap wrench

IMO the "Diesel" marked fuel cap isn't the answer. I've had the new tank put in, have 4 caps, one marked "Diesel" and the tank still
leaks with ALL the caps unless it's torqued to a ridiculous level. None of the 4 caps are easy to get off after being tightened. Seems
Kubota needs to be reminded that this isn't "Rocket Science"!

For now I just don't put in more than 5 gallons and this helps, but it still will leak if I boogy on the steep hills on my property. Arghhh!

I agree with you seery, we tried several caps on my unit when it was brand new, including the on marked " Diesel ", and that one just made it pour . The only fix was when the RTV was new, the dealer changed out the whole tank, which came with a cap. And it stopped the leaking. Now from what I was told, that some of the caps, has a different threads, not much, but they are not matching up as close as should be, But even with the new cap that comes with the new tank. It's still uncomfortable taking it off..... Maybe they will come out with a metal cap of some sort >>>

While I do like the idea of a metal fuel cap, here's another idea to temporarily fix the "fuel cap" problem on the RTV's.

What about cutting a thick ' diesel fuel compatible' gasket to fit snuggly inside the plastic fuel cap lid. Sort of like the idea of a replacementgarden hose washer. If that works, one might not need to torque the cap down so tightly to keep it from leaking and maybe it wouldn't be so difficult to remove either. (Free ideas are sometimes worth what you pay for them... lol.)

Keifer, a RTV wanna be

you mean they don't have a rubber gasket on the inside like a garden hose does ?? if not i think that would be the main problem right there.and hat about a vent line on the tank does it have one?or does it have one on the cap?

The new cap that came with the new tank, has a nice gasket. Also, my dealer let me keep the old cap and just went out to the shop and checked, and it also has a gasket on it also. I was told, it was the threads not matching the threads of the tanks, even though it screwed on. ( nope, it don't make sense ),But, don't know what's - what, but do know the cap that came with the RTV new, POURED so bad, I would hate to be the automobile that was behind me when towing it on the trailer, for the whole back of the trailer would be glazed with diesel fuel, just from bumping and bouncing down the road to the farm .....

I guess mine isn't so bad afterall. If I fill the tank to the very top, I get a little dribble out the side but never lost more than about 1 cup of fuel in the last 4 years.

I was thinking the same thing about the rubber gasget. Not near my RTV right now but it sounds like all caps already have it.

OK, thinking out of the box as others do. BTW, How am I supposed to think out of the box when nobody ever lets me out of the box???

How about putting something like teflon tape around the threads on the tank. Same stuff you use in plumbing. I don't think diesel would eat it as it's used for thread sealer in other fuel applications. My concern with using it is that it's normally destroyed after un-threading. So, anyone know of something like teflon tape but something that's a little stronger so it can be re-used?

DO NOT use teflon tape. It is the worst thing in the world for pumps and injectors! I recently put vaseline on my cap but have not run it much and I think my gauge shows full all the time now. will let you know in a day or so if the vaseline helped. It was still cold when I fueled last time and it was a total wrestling match to get the cap off. Also the craftsman strap wrenches break when you try to loosen cap with them. I must say this is by far the biggest complaint I have with my 900. At $4.39 a gallon I hate to see it slopping out. Bill B.

Just filled my RTV up at the truck stop, 5.546 gal @ $3.959 per >>> Total $21.96

Forgot to pick-up some fuel conditioner today, so I just put about 3-4 oz. of theMarvels Mystery Oil. That should hold me till next go round !!!!

Happy that the RTV's gets the milage / hours that they do. Wish that is all it took to fill up both tanks on that 3/4 ton truck !!!! That's why I running my Honda Accord EXeverywhere I can. It get's 32 MPG, compared to the 11-13 MPG of the 'olework truck.

$3.95!!!!!!!...You lucky dawg!!! Diesel ia running $4.10 - $4.29 gallon around here, up from $3.99 about 1-2 weeks ago. My F350 on empty is a $170.00+ fill-up.

i wonder why the deisel prices got higher than the gas? it used to be cheaper than gas.

BC It must be more than low-sulfer driving up the price of diesel. We here in California have had low sulfer for over ten years, yet our prices have recently spiked to almost $4.50 a gallon. Don't know f it's true or not, but I was told that taking the sulfer out of the fuel can cause older o-rings to fail. I know that I had to replace a seal in the transfer pump on my caterpillar shortly after they took it out. The crankcase filled with diesel.

I tried NAPA's anti-seize compound on my original cap with limited success. However the new cap works great (on the original tank) without any type of lubricant.
BC It must be more than low-sulfer driving up the price of diesel.
There's several related reasons. E.g., Now that the USA is running the ultra-low -sulfer, our refineries are now making the diesel that meets the EU's requirements so a lot of our diesel is now getting exported. They spend about $8.00 per gallon over there.

Global demand for gas/diesel is also increasing prices.

This whole leaking cap sounds to me like it should be easy to fix and someone has hit on the fix. With all the problem with the hard to remove caps and the still leaking fuel, it sounds as if the threads are binding before the gasket is contacting the top ot the filler neck. Seems to me that if there was a thicker gasket that would solve the problem, maybe add and O-ring under the original gasket to get it to contact the filler neck before the threads get tight, I don't think the threads are supposed to seal and hold the fuel in, if that were the case there would be no need for a gasket in the first place. Just my little pea brain rambling......

You know Milkman, You've might have the right answer. Thread are not there to stop the flow, the gasket is. And the " hard " threads just might be a keeping the gasket from sealing proper >>>>

milkman - THANKS so much for sharing your thoughts.

Did a little experiment just now.

1 - Removed (with large Channel Locks) the cap.

2 - Cleaned gasket and applied a thin film of Nyogel.

3 - Installed and tightened the heck out of the cap.

4 - Removed (with large Channel Locks) the cap.

5 - Checked the gasket, no seating ring evident on gasket.

6 - Said to myself "Hmmm....milkman is onto something!"

7 - Removed the gasket from one of my extra caps.

8 - Installed 2nd gasket on my cap, sits perfect under the flange.

9 - Cleaned 2nd gasket and applied a thin film of Nyogel.

10 - Installed and tightened cap and felt it make contact on gasket.

11 - Removed the cap, didn't need Channel Locks.

12 - Checked gasket, seating ring clearly evident on 2nd gasket.

13 - Smiled out loud!

14 - Tomorrow morning I'lll boogy the hills and see if she still leaks.

15 - Will report back.

I just read back through the thread and it was "another RTV wannabe" that got me to thinking on the gasket idea, keifer, got the pea brain ramblin, sure hope that it works for you, and maybe Tommy can fab up some POSI-SEAL DIAMOND PLATED fuel caps, of course he'll have to make the CAMO versions also.[Y]

milkman:

When us RTV wannabe 'peabrains' (and others) work problems out together its not impossible to solve alot of Kubota's problems-- LOL. Come to think of it, alot oftodays problems could be worked out if everyone worked together for the common good andnot just self-interests.Hey...I think I'm on to something here. lol

WOW, you inspired me to add a signature and an avatar, couldn't put a picture of a RTV and since I like to raise a BIG garden, I just used a pic of a squash blossom.[:$]
