Hello I am back

Hello Everyone:

I have not been able to get on the forum in some time. I am loving my RTV. So far I am happy with all the mods, I have done with the help of the people here on the forum. I do need the heavier duty shocks up front. I did go with the Maxis Bighorn tires like Brian has. I have some rubbing and Brian does not. I had wondered about the heavier shocks when I bought this. Brian has the plastic roof, and something for a non glass windshield. I have the metal roof [which I think is 100#'s heavier. and the glass windsheild. I also have a heavier front rack.

In a full left hand turn the tire rubs on the inside. It has not been a big deal to not turn as far,but I still plan to get the heavier duty shocks. The tread of these tires have been more than enough for my use.

Welcome back Glenn!!

I too was getting the rub on the full left turn but only when going down hill and a load of firewood in the box. Are you going to install them yourself? If so, you'll need a spring compressor but it should be a piece of cake. There's a thread on here somewhere that had to do with the lift kit but I believe there was reference to a technique that made the install of the shocks easier.

I'll be watching this thread closely because . . .

I just installed my new STI MudTrax tires sized 26x11x12 both front and rear on the ITP Type 7 machined aluminum rims.

Also have the glass windshield, roof, and Ramsey 5000# winch, all adding considerable weight.

Tires are rubbing on the frame (at the rear of the front wheel well where it makes the radius from vertical to horizontal) when turning just a normal amount.

My question would be how much will the front heavy load coil springs lift the front end? 3/4" to 1" of lift would solve my problems.

Really wanted to avoid the lift kit.

Hi Brian:

Thanks. I did remember you had some rub, but it seemed in more extreme situations. Mine will do it on flat ground with no load in the bed. Yes I think I will try to replace them myself. I do remember the thread you mentioned where they put in spacers. It sounds like a pretty easy job. I just need to find a spring compressor.

I will probably not change them right away. My time and money are focused on another project at the moment. I will of course post feedback. Where Brian only has a little rub in more extreme conditions I figure the heavy dutier springs will get me back to that "spot:"

Of course now I wonder if I should also lift the front a little, when I do it. ???

Around here, car parts stores lend them for free. They're part of a national chain so it should be the same where you are.

Glad to report my rubbing has been fixed.

Today I bought the V4219 Heavy duty front coils. Took the struts off myself, the dealer charged me 69.00 for the coils and 25.00 to remove old and install new coils on the struts.

Went from rubbing on flat ground to 1.25"+ of clearance. Tested it with two adults and 350# of grain in the bed and went down steep hills with sharp corners at the bottom. All is now perfect.

Wife and I just returned from a 2 hour ride. We both prefer the ride of the new stiff coils and the new STI MudTrax tires.

glad everything worked out great for you.

I might one day end up doing the same, the glass windshield, steel winch plates, winch ,steel top starts running into some heavyweight on the very front ~~~~~ I have norubbing, but would be nice to pick up the front alittle, without the lift kit thing ~~~~~~~~

I was going to start a new thread, but that option does not seem to be showing up anywhere right now.

I did buy my springs today. I was going to wait, but I guess I was motivated by the others that have changed theirs. Last week I received a spring compression tool for my birthday. This afternoon. I did replace one of the springs. I was probably close to 2 hours doing that. I removed the struts and changed out the springs myself. I seemed to have a little difficulty holding the strut in my vice. I was worried about damaging it by clamping it to tight. It took a little bit to get the new spring to stay seated in the ends as I was putting it back together, but managed ok.

It seems as if the directions have you take it further apart thannecessary, I will look at that further tomororw.

That side does sit noticeably higher now. I suspect I will do the other side in the morning, and suspect [hope] that that side will go faster.

I will let you know how it goes.

Ok the second side is changed. This one took me 60 to 65 minutes. It felt much much better. Perhaps I am just not understanding the directions but it seems they are telling you to take apart more than you need. hmm now re-reading it, again. On the lower arm.. they want you to loosen the vehicle side and unhook and seperate the knuckle case side. I was first looking at un hooking both, which did not make sence. To me it still seems easier to unhook the lower arm on the vehicle side and leave it all fastened to the knuckle case.

installing the spring. This time I wired the spring in place to the lower seat, that helped it stay in place. I probably saved most of my time in not having to fight getting the new spring back on.

I have not tried it in an extreme situation, but did try it out. No rubbing .... yeah. It sits noticably higher. 11/2 to 2" higher. you feel it getting in and out, and reaching into the front rack.

So now I will be able to take tighter turns, have more ground clearance, and more travel in my suspension.

Good Morning Fellow Forum Members:

I couldn't sleep last night because i was so excited about the new adventurous enterprise that TOMMY has undertaken. Because of his fantastic skills as a steel fabricator, he came upon this idea to have an apartment complex that would be Katrina and Ike proof. Tommy is already underway welding his Katrina proof structures. Two Guns and Bordercollie have already purchased an undestructable apartment from Tommy. As we talked over a cup of coffee this morning, Tommy said he has more people waiting in line to buy his apartments. If anyone wants to get in on the ground floor and become a partner with Tommy, all they have to do is dig deep in their pockets. This is a ground floor opportunity to become rich and famous. The picture you are about to see is the first photograph ever released of this worldwide undertaking. A project of this magnitude only happens once in a lifetime.
