Mid Mower Vs Rear Mower

Being a mid mount mower owner I always thought that it was the greatest thing in the world. It was easier to get around things and pretty level at mowing grass. After two years of taking it off an putting it on I have had enough. Now I'm looking for a rear mount 72" finish mower. I'm tired of trying to go up in the woods with the mid mount attached. It hangs up all too often. If it hangs up and you do not catch it in time something always breaks. Any idea as to who makes the fastest cutting mower on the market? I couldn't find any information on blade tip speed on mowers. Whatever mower I buy must have four wheels so that I can free float it. I mow a large field for my neighbors that is not flat. I was thinking of buying a slightly used Woods PRD7200. They look well made and it would do the job for me. I also want a rear discharge mower.

JimR..hello .. we have five finish mower all about 8ft...2 befco C70-090---2 rhino and 1 woods/froniter cant think of their #...we use them as commercial mowers everyday...mainly along road side with curbs all redischarge...I (the owner) not opertor anymore like the Befco the deck is alot stronger(thicker) to me it mows better the wheels for us are set in farther so they don't fall off the curb if we get too close...The woods/froniter made by J/D...is tought just not too strong on the wheel set up just not happy with the dealer here .... Then the rhino bought one than another before we ready got to use the first...Too lightly made but cuts good...Please remember we use ours 50 to 60 hours a week they do not make a COMMERCIAL grade for us...but yours use could be different...Befco and the woods uses the same blades which I like.... also they have blades set up to stop if you hit something..the rhino has a fix blade like a lawn mower dont like.. can't tell you how many time we put a new set on and the next day have a bent one...all mower are belt driven another draw back I dont like...one day I will make a finish mower out of a light duty mower just put 4 wheel on it and go...problem is we not a welder...hope this help... sorry I thought I had more pic on these Howard

Thanks for the information. Total use for this deck will be around 60 hours per season. I can do my field in a little over an hour. It takes 2 1/2 hours to do my neighbors place. I might use this 4 hours total every 10 days. We have about a 5 month growing season which makes it about 15 mows for the season. My mower deck will be paid for this season from that one job.

I have a Rear Finish mower just sitting in my pole barn. It's a Bush Hog brand 72" finish mower w/ rear discharge. I used it three seasons and then we got a Scag ZTR for the up close mowing. The Scag can cut so much faster that it's all I use for mowing. My rear finish mower just sits. I've kept it just in case the Scag breaks down, but have never had that problem. To bad your not closer Jim, we might work out a deal.
I went with RFM for the same reason you are considering it. The mid mount mower to often gets in the way and removing and remounting it is no fun. I kinda like the RFM. It did a nice job for us, but was slow compared to the ZTR (but everything is slow compared to them).
If you get Pat's easy change system that makes changing out the 3 point implements even easier! :thumb:

Doc - how wide is the deck on your Scag?

PB, Doc is not at home, he's at work.

I'm headed over to Doc's place this afternoon to leave the diesel and get the bush hog. I'll stop by and get you so you can pick up the Scag. You might want to leave 6 or 7 gallons of diesel for it.

Sounds good . . . oh price jump again . . . I'll leave 5 gallons maybe 4 by the time I get there!

That diesel will probably be worth more than both tractors the way things are going. :pat:

PB, the Scag has a 62" mower deck. Purrrfect for my uses. :thumb:

Yup, your a bit too far away. There are quite a few of them for sale around me for around $1000.00 like new. I was also thinking of the ZTR. This field I mow has some serious wet spots that require 4WD to go through it to mow without getting stuck. I mowed the place today and would have been stuck in the mud had it not been for 4WD. I guess the RFM is the only solution. I spent four hours today getting my MMM to work properly again. Every year something else needs to be fixed on it. If it is not a wheel, it's a hub or a bracket or linkage or a belt. It is always something. I didn't break anything today so that it a good sign.

I agree a RFM sounds like exactly what you need. 1000 would be a good deal on them. Mine was 1800 new. while the mid mount mower would have been 2400. I saved a bit on my mower and was able to get the front end loader! :thumb:

ZTR's get stuck much easier than I would have thought. One soggy place where I could mow in 2wd with the RFM found me stuck last year with the ZTR.

That confirms my thoughts on getting a ZTR stuck. I'd also bury it in my own field a few spots. Now to search out a great deal on a RFM.
