You guys are right, as a general rule, you should never use disposable batteries in a digital camera. That being said, be careful to buy good NiMH batteries and a charger that will properly recharge them. They are not "all created equal", believe me. Of course many digital cameras have their own proprietary battery.

I bought some NiMH batts at Sam's club that were total junk. They performed ok right out of the charger, but wouldn't "hold" a charge more than a couple of days. When I'm shooting weddings I take about 350 shots with flash on most of them and the batteries are still good at the end of the day (using the batteries in my Nikon SB800 flash).

A great place for batteries and chargers is: Thomas Distributing. I've been using them for years. Here's the link:

Hope this helps,

Matt

No, they are not ~~

I've used many brands from many places in my digitals. Use 'em quite often in my business' and in the woods. But so far, for the money, the best ones I've found for long service is the Duracell Rechargable Accu NiMH . I know they are many more inspensive brands & types. And maybe some aremuch better .But for what I use 'em for. These has lasted me the longest yet ....

I'll second the plug for http://www.thomas-distributing.com/index.htm they are good to deal with and if you get one of their chargers your batteries will last a lot longer. The chargers that come from Wal Mart with their batteries are not good and will fry good batteries in short order, the Maha batteriy chargers at Thomas are controlled chargers and they work.

I am on my second camera and I bought the Olympus SP-550UZ costs more but it is sure worth the price. It is the first digital camera with an 18X optical zoom lens, 28mm Wide. I have a one gig SD card that you can place all the photos on that you want. The camera also takes videos with sound.I have had the alkaline batteries in it for almost a year and like most cameras I thought it would eat up batteries so I am amazed. I bought the Charger and lithium batteries from Cannon on line but have never had to use them yet. I also got the plug in power adapter so you are not using the batteries when you are editing or down loading to the computer. Set for life as far as cameras go and you can sure shoot some wildlife photos with that 18X lens.

The camera cost $500

Amen on the Maha chargers. I have three of them and have used them heavily for years. Don't compromise on your chargers and batteries. It's not worth the few bucks you save. Actually, I've seen cheap department store batteries selling for more than what you would pay at Thomas Distributing.

Rusty Anvil, there are basically two ways to get your pics from your camera to your computer:

1. Hook up the camera to the computer with the supplied cable and software that comes with the camera (or software that you already have on your PC). Most cameras will come with a USB cable and will work with any computer with a USB port.

2. Buy a flash card reader which plugs into your USB port, unless it's a firewire reader (faster), then remove your card from the camera, plug into the reader and pull the images off the card to wherever you want on your hard drive. Some card readers will take multiple card formats. Make sure the one you buy reads your card, i.e. SD, Mini SD, Compact Flash, Memory stick, etc.

I prefer card readers. You may leave one hooked up all the time and when you need to transfer pics it's quick and simple.

The card readers I have in my computers, for work & home, is the SanDisk, it takes ALL cards, we use several types of cards, and the reader accepts every one of them. Software comes with it and works flawlessly !!!!

Rusty Anvil,

It's looks like the camera you ordered has a rechargeable lithium ion battery and charger included. This is a proprietary battery that fits your camera and should give you very good battery life.

You should not need to order batteries or a charger. The most you would need is an extra battery which will be specific to your camera. You will only need this if you want a fully charged backup on hand (handy if you anticipate shooting a lot of pics at one time).

Matt

PS Check out www.dpreview.com for a review on your camera and info on batteries, etc. Great site!
