New Rtv 1120D owner question about idling

Hi all, new rtv owner and my first diesel anything. In the past I have seen friends leave there trucks idling for long periods of time saying it's better than turning on and off. How long can it idle without causing problems and should it idle or be shut down during work times such as 15 minutes loading wood then moving then another 15 min loading? I love this thing it's like a little tank. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll welcome you to the forum Sector. Glad your found us. I know what I do, but do not know what is best so ...lets see what others have to say.
I'm more a 5 minute rule ....if I will be stopping for 5 or less leave it running. No clue if this is the 'right' way or not, but it's worked for me. My Diesel kubota tractor's battery lasted for 13 years with no charges from outside other than when engine was running.

I think five minutes is a reasonable trade off between fuel consumption and starter wear. I use that general rule on my Honda Foreman and I believe the diesel is quite a bit more efficient.

I would be very interested in your experience with the 1120 and I will be purchasing ours in the spring.

Thanks

I agree with the 5 minute idea. If it is below 20 degrees (F) I just leave it on if it is up to 15 minutes. As Doc said, the batteries last a long time. I just had to replace the battery in my 2003 B7800 with 2000 hours on it and so far the starter has not been touched. I used the five minute rule with this as well. Good luck with your 1120D. RTV's are a wonderful machine.

Welcome to the forum!

Personally, I probably do less than 5 minutes a lot of times but that's me. I find when I park the RTV to do some work (let's say load the trailer with firewood), if the RTV is running, I find myself working faster than I really want to.

to much idling will cause "wet stack" and isn't good for your engine. the old wives tale that it isn't good to shut off a diesel comes from the days when semi trucks has air starters on them and would leak to much air to start after a meal in the truck stop and then the electric starters were unreliable also so the drivers just let them run. i always let my engine run for a few minutes after i use it hard to let the coolant even out any hot spots then shut it down. i would say the 5 min rule should work just fine.
