i just traded my polaris ranger for a 06 900 rtv, after riding a little this weakend i have a few quest.first, i am not sure if my 4 wheel drive is working properly i got it stuck in a little mud whole and it seemed the front tires were not allways spining.also, i can pull it up to a tree and it will not spin all the tires it will bog the engine down in four wheel drive but it will spin the back tires in two wheel drive.also, i have a popping noise that sometimes comes from the front end. i would like to put a coast valve or make a adjustment to the machine so it will coast.and if there are any small mods that can be done to enhance performance i would like to do so.and last were can i get somekind of manuel or information on how to service it and what fluids to use and how often to do so.thanks for any info.

Welcome to the forums. First up how many hours are on your machine? If you send me a pm with your email I can send you the procedure to adjust the valve to let it "coast". It is two word documents that I can attach one at a time to an email. The popping noise, Is it when you turn or does it make it when you are running along? As far as the 4wd it should have one front tire driving as well as both rear ones when the diff lock pedal on the floor is depressed. You may need to reverse to get it out of 4X4 and sometimes you need to blip the throttle. Do NOT force the shifter for HLM or 4wd. Depress the brake pedal and hold it to shift. Some folks turn the steering wheel and find that helps also. Forcing it gets expensive! Bill

Ife found to get it out of 4 wd turn the wheel to the right and shift it to reverse. It generally comes out of 4wd easy like that. The popping noise could be from a bad u joint or low grar oil in the front differential.Thats a hard one to diagnosis without more info.
Muleman ILl drop you a PM for some info from you.
The lack of power is most of the time from the HDT being over heated or the fluid is broke down.A filter change and fluid change remedies this issue.

what fluids to use and how often to do so.thanks for any info.

Welcome to the Forum.

First suggestion would be the machine being "new to you". Change fluids,
PERIOD.

In the transmission, I would Replace ONLY with Kubota SUPER UDT. And use
the KUBOTA FILTERS.
Engine, Use Kubota or a quality filter. I and others use WIX .
Engine Oil: Use quality DIESEL OIL !!!

How many hours on your machine ?
Why do you want a coase valve ?
A Kubota shop can fix it to "coast" You might find out in time you like the "braking",>>>>
What are you plans to use the RTV for ?

And DO use the expensive Kubota fluid for the trans. Cheaping out on that has caused a lot of aggravation for folks. Rotella or a good diesel oil is fine for the motor. Consider a set of stick stoppers if you ride in the woods.

thanks for the replies.i plan on using the kubota to hunt off of,i hog hunt with dogs and haul them in the kubota once i get to the woods.the problem is not getting it out of 4wheel drive i am not sure if it is engaging or something i got stuck last night and the back tires were pulling but the front were not i can tell it is working sometimes but i dont think it is all the time it does not make since and last i want it to coast i hate the way it stops all the time i know it is good sometimes in some cases but i think it puts excessive were on drivetrain. think about it your double working everything.i know it is not a speed demon like some other utvs but i did not know if there were some mods to make it a little more sporty

did you check both front tires to see if they was spinning? it has a limited slip front dif unlike your polaris that had true 4 wheel drive where all 4 wheels spun. i think the right front passenger tire is the one that will spin on the rtv just like my old hpx did. another thing about limited slip difs is if you just put a little pressure on the brake peddle it will fool the dif and both front tires will spin. it used to work on my old hpx and it works on just about every 4 wheeler that has limited slip. there is nuthing wrong with havin a limited slip front dif i verey seldom use full dif lock on my rhino because when i lock up the front dif it is really hard to steer and just wants to go straight so i keep the front end unlocked and run it like that .

i got off the buggy and it looked like neither tire had spun but when you lock it in 4x4 it feels like it is in when you are driving it.

Don't forget that you also have the differential lock right there by your left heel with the orange knob there by the lift lever to lock it in place. For me, the 4WD is fine for keeping me moving; but once I bog down or have to start in the slippery stuff, I just lock the differential, rear wheels, and it takes off really well.............Though I have a wench have really never had to use it to get out of being stuck.......NO I DONT LIVE IN THE SWAMPS thank you.......the N. Georgia woods.....lol

For getting out of 4WD by the way, I back up perhaps 10 feet, and usually it just shifts back into 2WD quite nicely...........For the hard shifting a throttle blip gets the job done nicely for me..........

+1 on getting those fluids changed. 2Guns has the perfect advice going above................God bless.......Dennis

I believe it is engaging. When you try 2wd and the wheels spin (rear), then try 4wd and the engine bogs down it generally does this because the added traction of the front wheel. If you push against something that will move slightly you can probably get the front wheel to spin. A light pole has no "give" so for the most part your just deadheading the trans. I'll be back with more info at my break.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your RTV.

All these traction/getting stuck comments begs me to ask, what tires are you running? If you're using something like worksite tires, you're going to be in trouble in the mud even if you had 16 wheel drive.

it has 26 in mud witch tires on it they pretty good tread on them.i may be crazy but it just does not seem like it is working properly,i did not know if some of you guys had similar troubles.i am going to jack it up and see if the tires spin.i also want to service it do the front ends take 90 weight oil or do they take something special.also there is a cable that runs to the dash and the guy said it was some kind of release for the trans. but it is broken do yall have a sight to buy parts from or do you have to get everything from kubota store?thanks

are you sure they are mud witch and not swamp witch tires? the tread on the swamp witch tires is very aggressive and and they are pretty heavy tires at that. it would be hard for the rtv to spin them when nosed up to a tree . they seem to have a 589 tire pattern and those tires will grab rather than spin infact if you was to nose it up to a solid pushing point and really try to spin them your gonna end up snapping an axle.i have some outlaws and i had 589's before and i would never try to spin them like that that would be like spinning them in the mud and snagging a root and thats very bad for the drive train on any atv or utv.can you get some pictures of the tire you have ?

I agree with peanut. You wont be able to spin the tires in 4wd due to the tread. The cable that you were describing is a pressure relief. When you put the trans. in a bind and the motor starts to bog down you let off the accelerator and you can't get it out fo gear, you are "suppose to be able to" to pull this cable and release the pressure that is built up in the trans. (keeping you from shifting) but it doesn't always work.

Just a suggestion check to dsee if the front drive shaft is there and in one piece. If the old style shaft it could be a broken u joint ot yoke and even though it is en guaged it isnt spinning the front differential.
It may be the noise yoyr hearing also

you are correct swamp witch

did you check to see if any of the front tires was spinning when you was in the mud? like i posted before it would be hard for the rtv to turn them tires on dry ground not to mention what kinda damage it could do to your drive train. that popping noise you hear from the front end could be your cv joint going out. does it make the popping noise when the 4x4 is engaged or does it pop in two wheel drive? if it just pops when the 4x4 is engaged it could be some stripped teeth on the splines of the shaft . if it pops when it's out of 4x4 then look at the cv joints. if you go to youtube and look at a few videos of people destroying thier front and rear diferentials you will see that they are putting them in a bind with aggressive mud tires then all of a sudden you'll hear it start to click. i have never broken a shaft or cv joint in all my years of mud riding because i never give it full throttle when going in the mud and i also know that when i stop moving that means i'm stuck and it's time to use the winch i got just for that purpose some people will sit there and give it full throttle trying to think that more peddle means they'll move but most times more peddle means a higher repair bill when you snap a axle or cv joint.

not to be askin a bunch of questions but the more questions we ask the better the guys in here can help you out with your problem. did your rtv come with those tires on it already?did it pop after you drove it for a while or did it make the popping noise when you bought it? also try to look around on the rtv to see if you can find some traces of mud stuck in tight areas and also places that have been repainted too this will tell you if the old owner was doing alot of mud riding in it. it you could post alot of picture of your rtv that would help us out too the guys in here are good at seeing thing in pictures that you just can't get across in words if you know what i mean.
