RTV 500 windshield

has anybody made a windshield out of Lexan or plexiglass?I am looking to add a windshield but dont want to spend the 300.00 to do it.Just curious about how the lexan handled the bend of the front frame.

I can't speak for a 500 but I made a Lexan windshield for my 900.

Last time I looked, the materials to make a windshield cost more than buying one.

I don't like plexiglass as it scratches too easy.

I just did a quick search. Lexan MR10 at .188" thick is almost $400 for a 48x48" piece.

I made one, cost less than 50.00. It handles the bend great. I secured mine with plastic ties, but think I will move to stainless steel ones I saw at the hardware store this week. The biggest drawback is that to open the hood, you have to leave about a 8" gap between the bottom of lexan and the hood. I am looking for someone to sew a piece of canvas the shape of the opening, so I can secure it to bottom of lexan and top of hood. 1/8" lexan I think, so it would bend.

I just ordered the SS rubber coated loop clamps from Mcmasters Carr.Pack of 10 was 7 bucks and change plus shipping.I may do what you did and go with the 1/8 Lexan so it can bend to match the cage.Where did you get yours Mike1234?HomeDepot had the .222 plexglass for 55 a sheet,36x48.

I looked everywhere for something like those rubber coated loops, thanks for that info, I'll look into that. What size did you order?

I just tookmeasurementsand ordered from a local glass shop I do business with, I do a lot of business with them, so Iprobablygot a pretty good price at 50.00 I think I had it cut 48 X 36, but had to do some trimming from there, very easy to cut and drill. I also put a lexan cover over the top, because it was very light, cheep and no overlap (I rub that roll cage against trees pretty often), and easy to install.

Just to throw it out, I found a nice clamping system for windshields or anything else you would mount to the ROPS.

Look for 1 1/2" O-clamps for DJ lighting. They work very nicely for mounting to the rops. That's how I mounted my windshield.

Here's where I get them. The picture is fuzzy but if you do a search for O-clamp on their site (or in google), you'll get some good pictures.

Here's a thread on the site with my windshield using these clamps to mount.

I like your mounting system, looks good. I can't find the hood rack you have, I have looking for one since I bought the 500, but no luck. Can you give me the link? I am on the greene mountain site, searched for hood rack, but don't see it.

You have a nice set up. Do you have a stereo in there someplace? That has been a challenge to figure out too, a marine unit I guess, but not sure where to mount it or the speakers.

Do you have a method to cover the space between the bottom of the windshield and the hood? I am going to get a tarp or canvas and cut it to size and fasten it, if I can make it look good.

Tommy...If i remember correctly dont you make add ons for the RTV's???? I live north of Baton rouge and was just curious if you make a brush guard for the RTV 500?Wanted to do something other than the stock model.

Mike,

I haven't yet seen a hood rack for the 500. To be honest with you, it doesn't get used much.

I do have a stereo. It's mounted into a ceiling panel I made. I have 2 speakers mounted in the roof panel and 2 more mounted to the ROPS, again, using those O-clamps.

For the gap between the windshield and hood, I used a piece of rubber from a truck bed mat. It's rigid enough that you only need to secure to the 2 ends but flexible enough to cut/contour using a utility knife. It also bends/flexes out of the way when you go to open the hood. For mounting, I just put a small (probably 1/4") hole near each end and zip-tied it to the ROPS below the windshield.

For the stereo, ceiling panel or other accessory information, start with the link below. This is where members listed options and accessories added. If you find something you're interested in, do a search for it and you'll get a list of threads on the subject. If you need more info, post a new thread (or bump an old, related one) and we'll give you a hand from there.
