Rtv 900 pump upgrade

I'm considering using oem hydraulics on my 05 rtv 900 to power a wood splitter and would like to upgrade, or replace, my hyd pump. 7-8 hom would be enough , I think. Does anyone know of a place that beefs up our little 5 gpm pump ? Thanks for any and all suggestions.should read 7-8 gpm, not hom!

Welcome to NTT tmar04. :) :) :) I think David69 has a utility model. The utility model of the older days has a dedicated , larger pump I believe. wonder about adding one, possibly off market to your machine.? collie

Thanks ,BC. Maybe someone with first hand experience with a venture such as I am contemplating will chime in with opinions . Stay safe .

Welcome to the posting crowd! I see you joined in 2009 but these are your first posts.

If you're just contemplating and looking for opinions or suggestions, I'll toss in my 2-cents.

Personally, I prefer a stand-alone splitter with its own engine. This frees up the RTV to do other things. It also puts all the hours on a $200 6HP Briggs instead of the $2000+ RTV engine.

If I'm bringing logs that need split to the woodshed, I toss the logs in the RTV then back up to the woodshed. The stand alone splitter is sitting there and I take the logs out of the bed right onto the splitter. At the end of the day, the splitter stays at the shed (just turn it off and walk away) and the RTV gets pulled into the shop.

If I have logs where I'm doing everything in one area, it looks like what's pictured here. Buck the logs on the left side of the pic. Put them on the splitter in the middle then tossed into the RTV & trailers to be hauled to the pile.

Wow!! What a set up . You are probably right. I was more or less trying to figure out a way to utilize my hydraulics for more than occasionally raising the dump bed! I will probably follow your duggestions. Biggest problem is I am 77 yrs old and lifting those chunks of logs gets old quick! It just seemed like it would be easier to split in the field ? Then load small pieces onto trailer for transport to shed at house. Need a vertical type stand alone splitter that costs 1,000 minimum.(new) my plans were to buy a used 3 or hitch type and use rtv hydraulics. Thanks for pics. (Don't suppose you have another splitter you'd sell)

Thanks for your liking of my setup.

In the field, you're going to tow a splitter behind the RTV regardless of how it's powered. I just like being able to put the hours/abuse on a stand-alone unit.

I resemble that getting old issue. What I'm not sure of is which is worse. Picking up the logs to the horizontal splitter or being crouched down to do vertical splitting. My back has been telling me both really suck. I drag my son out when my body tells me "not today" but it needs done anyway.

I'd hope you could find a used splitter on Craigslist or similar for cheaper than new.

I do in fact have 2 splitters. The 2nd comes into play when I do in fact need to split vertically. I use one at the tree to split the logs vertically down to a size I can lift then use the other at the woodshed to do the finish work (horizontally). I would have no problem selling it to you but the next time I'm over central Georgia, I'll be at 35,000'. I don't believe the pilot will allow me to discharge a package to you.

I agree and understand your concern about gpm of the factory pump. I am afraid a splitter would be painfully slow unless you chose a very small model. Then it would be painfully limited in what it would split.

To get satisfactory results you may be doomed to buying a stand alone splitter that fits your needs.

Let us know what you decide. :)

Richard , I am sure you are probably correct and I will probably abandon my plans. Thanks to all you guys for advice.

I am humbled by your splitting. but on a side note,i purchased a harbor freight splitter this fall that splits both directions and it is a good machine and cost less than 500 on sale. it won't split vertical though

Is that the splitter that splits in both directions? If so, we're still waiting for your review :)

Arthuritis, that sounds like an amazing price. :) Sometimes HF has coupons for a % off in farm magazines and REA magazines too. Last one I saw was 20% coupon code. best wishes T. collie

My shop burned a few years ago and I had very good insurance. Bought this stand alone, trailer mounted splitter. It serves 4 wood stoves. It's almost good enough to just park by the wood pile and turn it loose. :)

Yeas this is the splitter that splits in two directions. I haven't done a review yet because i haven't had it long enough to really put some hours on it. my splitting doesn't hold a candle to what you go through.

now that makes my back hurt just to see that much fire wood. great splitter!!! i think i could split two years worth in just a couple of minutes with that.

It's a very nice splitter. Actually a Northern Tool item. Sinfully expensive. So I'm certainly not pimping it or saying anyone should fork out the money for it. I just ended up with it thru a bad situation. My Son's use it more than I do, see picture. :)

Hyd pump upgrade

Just to let all you guys know my decision?
, I bought a new stand alone County Line 22T splitter yesterday from TSC. 899.00 , no tax, no shipping and no interest if paid in 12 months. Works like a charm. Has Kohler 3000 engine . Thanks to all for suggestions.

I just looked in. I have used my 900 worksite to run my Wallenstein vertical splitter for years. One less motor to service and nice and economical to run on diesel. Plenty fast enough for me.

Well, now we have some first hand experience. Does your 900 worksite have the optional utility valve? Or do you just unhook dump bed and use those ports? What model Wallenstein do you have? Thanks so much for chiming in. At least now I know it is possible to use rtv hydraulics to power a splitter.

I have the optional pump with cooler and all. Hand throttle too. 50 feet of hose lets me park it away and downwind. Yes it could be faster, but you still have to load it up. So you do that while its retracting. I sit on a log and roll blocks in. Usually leave the splitter sitting by the wood storage. I'll have to go and look at the splitter for a model.
