RTV battery replacement alternatives

Here's an old post of mine on that subject:

"I recall a while back there was some discussion about the difficulty encountered when attempting to replace the original battery in an RTV. Clerks wanting to know what year and model car was involved, et cetera. I recently had to do some rewiring that required me to pull my replacement battery and thought I would post the information. I put an Optima Yellow Top Deep Cycle battery in a while back. It is a Type 34/78. That battery puts out 750 CCA, fits very nicely in the original battery tray, allows the original hold down strap to be used and has the battery posts at the right end of the battery. The woven lead coil in an Optima is a whole lot less fragile than standard lead plates, a good thing for those of us who spend time bouncing around the boonies here in Texas."

I added a tag to this informative thread so it could be found later. Thanks for the info. bordercollie

Do you have a lot of accessories you run especially when the RTV isn't running? (Stereo, aux lighting...)

If so, I'd consider switching to a deep-cycle marine battery.

The Optima's are the top of the line. I just use a deep-cycle with approx. the same physical size, post location as the OEM. It's been awhile but I thought I recall having to change the strapping for my new battery.

A good battery shop can hook you up (but I believe I got the new battery strapping from WalMart).

thats what i did on my old hpx i had the stock battery just for running the basics on the hpx and starting it . i kept the stock battery connected to the stock charging system and i installed a alternator off a toyota it put out somewhere's around 90 to just over 100 amps . i ran my winch and everything else that i installed to the deep cycle battery. that might be something you could look into alot of them small compact cars have really small alternators and one might just fit in the place of the stock rtv alternator .with all the electonics they have in todays cars the alternators have to put out a good bit of amps to keep everything running right.

Was wondering what would be best. Its a 2004 RTV and its time has come.

Just one man's counsel: I've been operating motorized vehicles for more than 55 years. I've replaced a lotta batteries over that time. At some point ... more than 30 years ago ... I discovered Optima batteries. I bought 'em ... and never looked back. I've never had an Optima battery fail on any of my machines.

We run the Optima on a many of machines here. When we have the original battery go out on anything, it is always replaced with a Optima....

WE NEVER HAVE BATTERY TROUBLES !!!! NEVER !!!!

I replaced mine with an Auto Value Premium 3 years ago and I run all lights spot lights and a 1000 watt power inverter off of mine and have had no problems.

FWIW I went with the Optima yellow top. Napa cost was $184 + tax with AAA/geiser discount. Optima had a $25 rebate so before tax cost was actually $159. It fit ok with the 6 pack bottom tray. Broke a tie down rod but substituted some 1/4" all thread which was bolted the to tray making re-install easier. Starts real easy now and looks cool to boot. Old factory battery (2004) was down to 200 amps. I understand optima may not warrant their products when bought online and Napa was cheaper anyway so heads up.

Thanks all for the good advice.
