RTV bogging out...

Anyone experience a bogging down from their RTV? It's symptoms are it idles fine, but when put in gear, it starts out fine, then it seems the fuel flow stops, or damn near, and it stumbles all over itself, then gets a shot of fuel and goes, only to bog down again. I thought i had it fixed by replacing the fuel filter. The original filter was somewhat restricted, when i blew threw it with my mouth to check it. The symptoms diddnt really go away, and now its bad. I replaced the "new" filter with another, but with blowing threw the new replacement, the filter wasnt clogged. (yes, i have it installed correctly, with arrow on filter showing which was the fuel flows.). Before i really start pulling my hair out, i thought id ask the forum.

Thanks, Jeff

Yes, good place to check, but ive long ago removed the spark arrestor, and have banged out the air filter.

Check the quality of the fuel >>> is it pickingup enough fuel ?

Either that, or sounds like something is being restricted some how >>>>>>>

How old is this machine, how many hours, are you using any type of fuel conditioner if you are in the cold weather up north ? Are you still under warranty.... if so, I would bring it to my dealer and let him pull his hair out >>>>> don't let it get to you, cannot be much wrong ......

I would guess water in the fuel from condensation or fuel injector sticking. Must be a good guy with a name like fordnut. My Ford diesel truck will act up if I do not drain condensation from the fuel filter bowl.

As a last resort take the plug out of the muffler and rev it up to blow the soot out. It takes an allen wrench to do this. put the plug in your pocket while doing this so the it won't get lost. I almost lost mine but found it where it had vibrated off onto the ground. Then I put it back in before I could lose it again. [:P]I doubt this will help but there is a chance. I did get a LOTof soot out of our skid steer when I did it although not as much out of the RTV. It (skid steer)seemed to work better afterwards. Also just make sure something hasn't blocked the air intake on your machine . I was thinking maybe a mouse had blocked it. What about the rubber vac type hose under the engine that hangs down, possibly clogged?? Good Luck, Bordercollie[&][&]

Thanks for the replies. I think there were some good suggestions i havent tried.. (1) Checking for air leak in the fuel line. Could be this. I DID service the filter, so thats possible. Ill go check when it warms up.
(2)Water in the fuel. Never had this in all my experiences , but there is a water seperator on my other diesels, but the RTV doesnt have one. I can put in a suction tube into the tank, to the bottom, and suck out half the fuel. (with barrel pump, and a piece of hose stuck on the end of it.) If there is water, it will be on the bottom. I may do this just to eliminate the possiblility. (3) Tube clogged that hangs down inside the unit. I never inspected this, and had me thinking about it. I dont know why. (4) Mouse/rat , animal crawled in the muffler. Doubt it, but it IS possible, and i will have to check it out also. This WOULD cause the symptoms of bog. Cant believe i wouldnt smell it though.
It is very cold here, but i do run premium fuel additive in all the diesels. All diesel is bought from the same place, off road, non taxed.

Its 3 yrs old, and has 160 hrs.

If/when you drain some fuel out of the tank, stick a flashlight in there and take a look.
There may be a piece of debris in your fuel tank that's partially obstructing the fuel line going out.

Hi , On the air intake , I was talking about where the air enters the chamber before it gets to the air cleaner. This is where I thought there might be a blockage by a mouse or something. On the muffler,it has a plug under it where you can "clean it" and has nothing to do with the spark arrestor. This is in the manual on page 55 of my '05 manual. It sounds to me like it s something to do with the air or fuel blockage Wonder if whatever got in the fuel filter is still in the tank causing this trouble? since it idles fine. maybe the line under neath has stopped up with mud or such. I think with such few hrs it should be a minor thing. I have a really ugly JD mower (diesel) that I bought used for 225$ with a like new deck. It smoked and looked terrible but it cranked. It had been mistreated and owned by a city so you know that it had been abused. Well, my Dad ( has Parkinson's)and I replaced the injectors (this caused the smoking according to my Dad because I had zero blow out of the oil stick area .) and cleaned the fuel tank out good., she runs like a top now and doesn't smoke at all.I changed all filters and fluids and have a good mower that is so ugly maybe nobody will steal it. I keep this in Ark at their house. Keep us informed. Bordercollie[&][&]

A couple of people have posted in the past that off road fuel caused their RTVs to run poorly. When you get everything cleaned up you might try runningsome road fuel and see if anything changes. I use road fuel in my equipment and just take the tax credit for the highway tax portion of the fuel price.

While I was typing this something occurred to me. Are the RTV's fuel tanks vented? If they are this would be something to check out. A clogged vent or bad fuel cap would hinder performance. .

I am joking but you did remove the vice grips used to cinch the fuel line when you changed the filter, right?

Fuel Cap huh? My fuel cap is a piece of SH....T. I hve heard of the problems associated with the fuel cap. andmine is bad. I have to use a HUGE set of channel locks to open it, and remove it. Like the threads are not even CLOSE to matching. This is my biggest complaint, so foar, with the machine. Can i have the cap to tight? Not vented? This may be something.

Jeff

Fuel Cap,,,,It's the tank & caps threads ....Some just don't match up !!! Reason being, when mine was brand new, back in Feb. last year, mine leaked BAD , my dealer give me a new cap to try,.... It stated on the top " Diesel Fuel " in white letters on it.... It did not work, tried it for a week or so ....

Then my dealer ordered me a new tank from the factory....New tank ,came with a new cap. It works perfect, no leaks what so ever . And don't even have to put the cap on tight at all ........

Now, that being said, he let me keep that cap thatcame originally with the machine, and the cap that had " Diesel Fuel " on the top ... Then, Just to see, ( did some testing ) with my new tank.... I put the old original cap on the new tank, it leaked, put the " Diesel Fuel " cap on , it leaked, and put the cap back on that came with the NEW tank on , IT DON'T LEAK >>>>> and is easy to put on and take off ~~~~~~~

I even tried the new cap that came with the new tank on the old tank they removed. The threads are different,. wouldn't even get started good.

Now, after doing some research later , found out that the threads on the tanks were in fault, and some of the threads on the New caps were at fault.... something to do with the molding process of the production of the tanks ...

Bottom line is, be sure not to mix up the old cap with the new tank.. Keep both that came in together !!!!

Hope ya'll got all that, I like to have confused myself writing this one ~~~~~
