Serious Sounding Clunking Noise on my RTV 900

Strange thing happened today while driving my 2010 RTV 900 with only 112 hours on it. (Engine oil and tranny fluid/filter changed with super UDT2 at 50 hours)

I had been driving up and down my paved driveway for about 30 minutes in M gear with the grandkids, and then on a level spot, doing about 10mph, it starting making a clunking noise and it slowed it down, I stopped it, checked underneath to make sure I hadn't run over something, because it almost felt like a flat tire. Started it up again and it was doing the same thing, but I kept going trying to get the grandkids back to the house, and it finally smoothed out.

Bought it back to the house and checked under the bed and found nothing out of place, fluid level was good. The linkage to the tranny seemed to be engaging M gear correctly and the other gears. BTW, the other day I noticed that it was left in 4WD after I had driven on the paved driveway for less than a mile. I disengaged that, and came back to the house and parked it until today.

So I took it back out later on a paved hill and from a standing stop, started in M gear and I felt a slight roughness, no serious noise, just as it started moving. It did not do that in L gear, but did do it in H gear, but not as much as M gear. Using the hand throttle I increased the engine rpm slightly because it was vibrating and it still did the same thing. Drove it on the grass and engaged and disengaged 4WD several time with no problems. Then I drove it several more times up and down the paved driveway and wasn't able to duplicate serious sounding clunking noise that happened earlier.

Now I'm concerned I may have a problem, just don't know how to isolate it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Tribute.... Do you have the 2 piece drive shaft? If so, it could be your carrier bearing.. It sounds and feels like a log wagon when it goes out. It is located right there under the seat , on the frame, where the front and rear connect..... it sounds like that could be it to me... Also, if it somehow got a bunch of grit in it, the carrier bearing might make that noise... I do have a thread on here 'bout mine going out. collie ps.. I hope it is this because it is an easy fix...

I just checked and my 2010 RTV 900 has a one piece shaft going to the front differential.
Thinking back to when it made that sound it felt like I had a flat front tire and seems like I felt it in the steering. It could be the front differential.

I'm going to jack up all four wheels today and see if I can see or hear anything.

check fluid in front diff for correct level and if so inclined drain it and look for metal shavings in the drained fluid. does the plug have a magnet?? check the boots on the CV joints for damage. jack up the front and turn the wheels to feel for slack or roughness.

Are the front boots damaged? Jacking it up, rotating the tires and listening for noises and while level, checking the fluids as arthuritis suggested, is where I would start. It could be that one of the front cv joints is giving problems. Take the time to clean around the center front diff plug before you remove it.( I use a blow nozzle and tooth brush) The shoulders of the plug sure holds grit in the recess. I'd go ahead and change the fluid in the 3 front places while I was at it. Good luck ! collie

Thanks for your suggestions.
I just had the unit up on jack stands, ran the unit in each gear, back and forth in 4WD. Everything sounded good. Shook each tire for bearing play and rotated back and forth and heard the normal sounds. The front one piece drive shaft, connections and boots were fine.

All the other CV boots checked out OK and while I was under there I sprayed everything rubber with silicone spray. While it was up I rotated the tires front to back, but replaced one of the rears that had a slight wobble with a spare I had.

The slight roughness when slowly taking off on a hill is still there, and it may have always done it. The roughness feels like it's the tranny fluid pulsing slightly. If you take off fast, you don't notice it.

Per aurthuritis, I will go back and check the front differential, drain it, checking for shaving, and refill it with some SuperUDT2. I'll also do the same for the knuckle cases.
