TBT: Throw Back Thursday

On Facebook, some in my circle of friends have been posting old photos on Thursday. Here are a few pictures taken in 1978 by a friend of mine that flew helicopters for the NC National Guard after his tour in Vietnam flying Cobras. We had just finished building our house in the WNC mountains near Asheville. The bright panels on the roof were a solar heating system we used until the heat pumps became more efficient.

Cool pics! That's one heck of a hill you have there.

I spent my days in the USMC doing avionics on Huey's and Cobra's. :)

I don't know if I have any old pics digitally but I'll look around.

bczoom, Thanks for your service !
This was a natural level spot on that part of the mountain. Although covered by trees, the slope up to the cliff is strewn with large boulders. We have great 15 mile views off the deck. My friend, who survived flying Cobras in Nam, crashed landed while flying one around Salisbury, NC when his tail rotor went out at 2,000 feet and managed to bring it down on the skids. It crushed the skids, his seat, messed up his back for a while, and he got as hiatal hernia. His crew chief didn't fair a well. He continued to fly until he retired about 5 years ago. He never talked much about his Nam experiences.

I've had a few rough rides but nothing that bad. Glad he was able to save it from 2000'.

Good idea TB100. Good pics. You haven't run into a guy named Ken Hillberry down that way have you? A friend of mine from school who lives there.

Hmm I'll have to see if I can find any TBT pics.
