The '14 Hummers are HERE

Here in NW Georgia the hummingbirds typically show up on the first of April.....ON THE DOT.........The hover at the plate glass windows of the front of the A frame portion of the house, say hello, and then head for the feeder. If food isn't out they come back to the windows and let us know......TRULY!!!!!!!!

This year they were late......they showed up on the 4th of April.....Guess they had just as hard of a winter as we have. Usually there are male "scouts" that hang around a few days and then disappear. With the females and cocks showing up perhaps as the scouts are heading out.............

Anyway, glad to see them......Now we start going through the pounds and pounds of sugar to put in probably 5 or 6 feeders spread around the gazebo........lol.....we usually buy 25 or 50 pound sacks at Cosco.........Got your feeders out??????........God bless......Dennis

Dennis, what is your sugar water recipe? thank you
p.s. flooding here and headed your way or just N of you be ready ! collie

We use 1/4 cup sugar to 2 cups of water.

Seems to work good.

Mixture lasts for about 3 days in our feeder when they're hungry.

We don't see them until the 2 or 3 week of May.

Great news Dennis.

Summers is coming!!!

We definitely use a 4 to 1 ratio..........If we are making for one feeder we put in 1/2 cup of sugar to 2 cups of water, microwave it for a couple of minutes, let it cool and let them have it.........Usually we make up a gallon or two at the height of the season like in June/July.........Then.....we will have up 5 or 6 feeders around the eaves of the Gazebo with 30 or more birds zoooooming within inches of our heads.......Then some years like last year, no more that 5 or 10 birds......
Today, a hen came along and sat at one of the feeders for like 30 minutes. She must have been traveling as she looked thin and would take a deeeep drink for perhaps a minute, let it settle, and then drink again..........
They are great little birds. Truly amazing to watch......But more expensive and trouble to keep going than the grain bird feeders that bring in a totally different side show.......

Anyway......4 to 1........not 8 to 1.....4 parts water and 1 part sugar.....God bless.......Dennis

We got 3.5 inches last night not a gully washer at all.....just steady....but to the south of us GOT RAIN........Total downpours........God bess......Dennis

Thank you for the repliesI once found a little fella just plum worn out from trying to get out of the skylights in the tall storage building. He had just fallen to the floor. Grabbed him up ran to the feeder and stuck in his beak. He drank as I held him, perked up, I put him on the feeder's footrest and he filled up. Dashed off a bit later. Happy ending!
