WEED CONTROL

Thought I would add a little info on this since we all are going to start spraying for weed control.

There is now other herbicides that are great other than the very pricey Round-Up. They have a product now on the market called

Glyfos X-TR, ( http://www.cdms.net/ldat/ld289006.pdf ) cost about $38.00 per 2 1/2 gal. compared to Round-Up Max, which runs in the neighborhood of $135.00 per 2 1/2 gal.

Been using the Glyfos for three years now, and the results are even better than Round-Up. Always adding Surfactant to the mixture. The Surfactant is a additive that will break down the waxy covering of a plant ( weeds ), which makes the plant absort the herbicide so much better and faster. Makes the herbicide stick to the plant, and which cuts down the amount of spray that has to be applied ....

Also, the amount of the herbicide that you spray makes all the difference in the world. Most people think, the more the better. WRONG !!! All you want is a small " MIST " or should I say, a few microns of herbicide on the plant. For if you cover the plant to much, you smother the plant, shocking the weed, killing the top of the plant only, BUT NOT THE ROOTS !!! What you want is, to barely let a very small mist, and let the plant draw the herbicide down to the roots. Every leaf or sprout of the plant don't have to get herbicide on it, just one little " speck " on any leaf, and the weed will draw it down to the roots, killing everything from top to bottom, that not letting the plant to come back !!!!! That's why it is important to use the Sufactant !!!! Makes it stick so much better !!!!!

Wish we could use the Glyfoswith planting the Corn, Cotton, Soybeans etc, etc on the farms. But the seed companies make us use the Round-Up Max for they have their hand in genetically designing the Round-Up Ready seeds, which we use.on the farms. The seed companies will not warranty the seeds if you use any other herbicides other than Round-Up brand..... To bad, for we have to purchase many 55 gallon barrels of this herbicide at a time. Many timesduring the year !!!! It would be so much easier just to dip into this for use on the deer management properties. But the good thing about it, mother nature don't have a warranty, only a guarantee, that she will throw all kinds of weeds and plant exactly where you DON'T want them to be, and then, on that part of spraying, I use the Glyfos.

Hope this help some !!!!

Re: WEED CONTROL

I plan on purchasing a 12 Volt sprayer this spring to spray my Montana weeds. I used Round-Up with a pump sprayer the last few years and it killed everything. I do not know anything about spraying but would like to learn. Killing the weeds is my goal but leave the grass if possible. Two Guns I like your article but I am really confused now. Do you add the dawn to the spray and how much? I guess I have been spraying wrong since I make sure the weeds are soaked good and even then they seem totake forever to die off.

Re: WEED CONTROL

Some friendly advise, purchase a Fimco sprayer, we've used 'em all, on smaller applications, you canot bet a Fimco , they are rough, tuff, and will last. Secret to keeping any sprayer is to chemicals out after use. And if you use 2-4-D, rinse out with ammonia really good !!!!

You asked did I use Dawn dishwashing liquid ~~~ NOPE ~~ I use Surfactant , Bczoom say's he's cheap, and uses Dawn !!!! Everybody got their own ways.

Re: WEED CONTROL

For you lawn (or wherever it is you want to keep the grass), you don't want to use RoundUp or other total vegetation killer. Ortho "weed-b-gone" or similar will kill weeds but not the grass.

Have you ever noticed that when water lays on the leaves of many broad-leafed plants, the water turns into droplets? Well, the droplets can and do roll off the leaves. The purpose of the Dawn is to keep it from turning into drops and it goes on more like a film so it stays on the plant. I add about 1/3 cup to 25 gallons.

For a total vegetation killer, I'm not a real big fan of RoundUp. As you mentioned, it takes forever and doesn't work very well. I do believe they have a new version that shows the effects (browning) within 24 hours. If I have smaller weeds, I like the Spectracide products. If I have larger plants to kill (e.g. multiflora roses), I go with a stronger product like Acme Brush Killer.

If I'm only spot spraying weeds with a 2-gallon can/pump instead of the big sprayer, I often use my own mix. If you're not big on chemicals, this is probably your best solution as well. Vinegar is the primary ingredient. Mix 1 cup salt to one gallon of vinegar and heat to near boiling. The heat will dissolve the salt and cook off some of the water in the vinegar
making it a slightly stronger solution. Let it cool. Add about 8-10
drops of liquid dishwashing soap to help the solution stick to the
leaves. Put it in a spray bottle and have at it.

If you're lazy or in a hurry like I am at times, just pour vinegar and a little soap in your sprayer. It'll work almost as well as the formula above.

Dawn does contain a surfactant, that's why I use it.

Re: WEED CONTROL

Canyon Creek, Monsanto says on some weeds they suggest that you apply Round Up to the point of roll-off, i.e., saturated. Other weeds just need a light misting. It also depends on what solution concentration you're spraying, wiping, or spotting. I think everybody suggests a surfactant these days since it breaks the surface tension of the solution so that it doesn't bead up on the leaf. The applications, rates, and coverage will all be on the label (which is usually a small book).

I like Round Up since it is relatively safe. It will incorporate and break down into harmless salts in a couple of hours. That's one reason they can use it over crops that will be consumed. But it's not for every use since it kills everything it touches. It's slow sometimes but I can wait - sometimes on woody stuff it will be the following year. My rule of thumb is that it takes about as long to die as it does to grow...

Iwasn't familar with the Grazon that Border Collie uses. But I looked it up and it seems like a pretty good product. In these days of high fuel costs I think it will be more economical to pay for chemicals rather than use diesel to mow down the brush and weeds.

Re: WEED CONTROL

Tommy,

If you wanted to see napalm in action that had a wierd twist to it, you should of been with us at a Air Base in Turkey during the Turkish and Cypriot war. An F86 Sabre Jet came back from a bombing mission on Cypress and he had a napalm bomb hang up on his plane. These fighter pilots had about 1 hour of training before they went on a mission. He tried to get rid of the ordanance but had no luck and the flight officer said land..........................He lit up the whole runway......

So, did he get rid of all the weeds in the cracks of the runway?

Re: WEED CONTROL

Canyon creek, I posted info on how I spray in the wiper thread because I went there first. I would guess your count agent would be loaded with local information on specific weeds and how to control them. That is where I started many years ago. They have booklets and all sort of info available for your specific locality. I am all stressed out now because I have so much to spray before our neighbor plants his crops. My spray will kill cotton, tomatoes etc and they say it will corn if it gets directly on it. So far I have sprayed about 1/2 of what I need and it is either windy or cow troubles.I can't forget the blood pressure med right now cause I can tell when I do. Anyway, most of the spray products have very specific info about how much to control what on the thick folding labels. If you use a dish liquid you may wish to add it last or your sprayer will foam over before it gets filled with water. I add my sufactant last because my brand foams too, then I turn on the pump and let it circulate to mix. Bordercollie

Re: WEED CONTROL

Thanks guys I have learned a lot. Down South you folks probably have weeds ready to spray now but in Montana it will probably be the first of June before we even think about weeds. Last year it was still snowing in May.

Re: WEED CONTROL

And Doggman one of the best things aboutherbicides like Grazon is the residual control it has. If I spray at the recommended rate, I will have no bitterweed the entire season. It is a restricted use chemical { you need a license to buy} but the license is fairly easy to get.. Just know how to calculate to use it, safety and common sense. That's it. Call your county agent. No deadly blue weed etc. Whenever I miss a stretch.,its as if it was a line drawn there. say like a big slice of pizza in the pasture. And the BIG plus ,your grass has no competition and will make the best of moisture and fertilizer.!! Grazon isn't available in all states but other chemicals are. Good Luck and I hope I helped . Ask away anyone who wishes and we can all learn together. I learn something everyday.Bordercollie

Wouldn't hurt to " test fire " the napalm, on some of these swamp rats & beavers.

On another note, wouldn't hurt the U.S. Corps of Engineers to watch how the beaver build their dams & structures. Maybe their levees' would hold up better under pressure.

Re: WEED CONTROL

yea them beavyer and nutrias they do some damage . that tractor was out plowing yesterday and when he got close to the nutria tunnels he slowed down.lol hey speakin of lawn care and stuff is anyone close by here that hunts and wants a set of plows to pull behind thier rtv ? i think they are like 6 blades the blades are good enough for a hunting plot or you can get new ones . i might even have some new ones in the shed if i do you can have them too put they are free for the takin. i'll post pictures if anyone wants them i know if you was to buy some they would run you about 1k for a set like this infact they might be antique for all i know but i don't wanna cut them up and scrap them because i know someone can use them .i pull them behind my hpx to groom the trails and they work fine they would be even better for a food plot.
