What do you RTV owners think of this?

Here is a video by Kubota about all the good points of the RTV900 an RTV900 Review so to speak.
Looks great to me.
Just wondering what you guys with some hours in the seat would think of the video. Agree or disagree with the points they make?

Good ......
It should also include a small clip of them pulling a trailer or heavy items in the bed.

The RTV is a super machine !!!! PERIOD !!!!

Normally towing capacity is limited more by brakes than the max amount that can be towed, as once you get it moving you have to be able to stop safely.

What is the towing capacity of the rtv900? and what is the max you have towed with yours?

I would also suspect tongue weight would be a limitation since the RTV length and over all weight is not as much as a pickup.

That video is pretty much spot on. A couple things I noticed. The "leg room" isn't as generous as they may say. Also, the key location is still in a knee-kicker spot. They had 2 RTV's in the video. One with worksite tires, the other with ATV. I'm thinking the one with worksite tires going through the mud was always in 4WD and probably with diff lock on. With better tires, it could have done it in regular 2WD.

The only adverse comment I can offer regards the dashboard layout and the ignition key location. I'd redesign the dash completely and get the key moved up high, out of the way of knees. Based on my 5 years of RTV900 experience, I'd say the ad is truthful and effective. If i didn't already have an RTV900, I'd buy one. And one more thing: they oughta come straight from the factory with front mudflaps installed.

The most towed with a RTV 900 maybe would be eight (8), 55 gal.barrels full of corn,on a tandem axle, 18 ft. utility trailer..... threw the woods and fields, not on solid ground either ...........

....... or pulled a John Deere combine a few times, and pulled a John Deere
tractor out of the way. Pulled equipment hauling trailer loaded with
combine header to move .

There are many times the RTV took care of business, and never
even grunted !!!!!

Good video overall, but I have issues with two of their claims. First it's leg room. I find leg room rather limited and as someone mentioned previously, the key is a knee whacker.

The other issue is the ability to climb steep hills and be able to stop and start on a steep hill. The 08 900 I had could not do that, it would rev the motor and not move a wheel. It could even get stuck and not spin a wheel! While the Kubota dealer couldn't fix that, they did make it right by giving me a super great deal on a new 11 900xt. The 900xt performs as claimed in the video.

Thanks guys. Good info.

LongBlackRam, do you know what the difference might be in the 08 and 11 RTV's? I wonder if it is something where the older units can be modified to do better on hills?

Kubota revised the design of the hydrostat for the 900xt. The difference in performance is night and day. With the new design hydrostat the 900xt will do most everything in High that the previous design struggled to do in Low.

I was told the housing is different; making retrofit unlikely.

If they want to see what a 900 will do they ought to video mine coming up the powerline. The last 50 feet you have to lean over the dash with your left heel on the diff lock. After I took my neighbor up and down when we tagged the bear he dumped his John Deere and got one. The wardens were impressed also when I came down the hill and said how are you going to get back up there? Told them same way I came down. I had the D5 cat dozer sliding a good bit when I pushed the trees off for the power line. The wife just closes her eyes and leans forward when I tell her to. If they want to be honest they should show what happens when you follow a log skidder in the slop. High centered it and had to get the Amish kids to hook a team and pull me off the crown. Then I had to give them all rides up and down the dirt road.

Thanks LBR, to bad a retrofit is unlikely.

Muley, how steep is that hill? You make it sound like it has a tough time on your hill, but I know you live on a mountain, so I'm not sure how to take your comments. What year is your RTV? I have a long grade up from the river that my ATV's and tractor can handle, but it is a long haul. If the RTV loses power on a long climb I would not like having to lean over the dash and pushing on the differential every time I'm heading up that hill. And that is far from the only hill I have lots of them, that is the longest though.

I'm looking at buying a used 06 is the reason for my questions.

Doc - For climbing long steep hills, you'll want to have it engage the aux pump. Basically, if it starts to bog down, ease off the pedal. At around the 1/2 way point on the pedal, that pump will kick in and you'll have plenty of power. You'll recognize it in that the RPM's will go back up and you'll have the power. You won't be going as fast but it'll just keep going and going.

An addition that helps the entire process is a hand throttle. With it, you can set the engine RPM's independent of the gearing/speed. Same as a tractor hand throttle.

It does sound much like my tractors tranny (hydro). I can imagine a hand throttle would help the process. Is that addition very expensive?

Doc, mine is an 06 and the power line is steep enough the power company guys skipped the center pole and spanned 600ft. rather than bring out a tracked hole digger. The last 50 ft is real steep at the very top. The kid running the excavator slid back down 3 times and left the job when they were running the gas line. They ended up tethering a D7 to it to finish the last part. It makes the front wheels lift off the ground if you don't lean out over the hood. Wife don't like it at all and would prefer driving across my lower fields and going around on the town road and back up the lane. We winched most of the logs up to the field on top to cut for firewood. You don't want to try climbing it in bad weather and walking it will tire you out. I have challenged my cardiologist to come out and race me to the top. On a good day I can do it with only one stop to catch my breath and rest.

While my hills are tough to walk up also, I don' think they are near as steep as your mountain.
We did have a dozer do a nose dive while clearing some trees. He was straight up & down. He said it was all in a days work. I do think he messed up but he didn't want to admit that. :yum:

Doc, The transmission on the xt 900 is amazing. My 05 RTV was a good machine but it did need to be in L to start pulling a heavy load. The xt starting with the"11 model can start pulling a heavy load in H.
I don't even have to think about what I'm doing when going up a levee in H with it. With the old model , I had to be very aware of what I was doing. Like if I was chasing a cow and going up a levee or high point, the old one would slow down and begin to stop then I would need finish stopping to shift to L to get it going again. By then the cow was just" laughing" at me .the xt on the other hand, will be on the cows rear the whole time. I am glad I have the xt although I still love having had my '05. It was a great machine and helped me do much here on the farm. Maintance is important when buying a used machine. I kept a record of my high hour machine's oil changing under the hood and that had people wainting in line to buy it even with over 4000 hrs on it. No mistreatment helped too- although it was used, it was never abused and yes, it was "loved". Good Luck, bordercollie

Doc - As I recall, the hand throttle was about $50 give or take $20. :) Quick install at around 5-10 minutes.

2-guns post in our sticky thread on accessories.

Kubota Hand Throttle Kit V4241 >>> $ 51.00

I was looking that thread over the other day, didn't know the application for it so I skipped right over it. :bonk:
