When T. Boone Pickens says we can't drill our way out of this mess...

Good post Paul. I have seen his commercials and wondered what he was up to.

Here is an excerpt from the USA Today article:

Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens wants to supplant oil with wind
SWEETWATER, Texas — Get ready, America, T. Boone Pickens is coming to your living room.
The legendary Texas oilman, corporate raider, shareholder-rights crusader, philanthropist and deep-pocketed moneyman for conservative politicians and causes, wants to drive the USA's political and economic agenda.
"We're paying $700 billion a year for foreign oil. It's breaking us as a nation, and I want to elevate that question to the presidential debate, to make it the No. 1 issue of the campaign this year," Pickens says.
Today, Pickens will take the wraps off what he's calling the Pickens Plan for cutting the USA's demand for foreign oil by more than a third in less than a decade. To promote it, he is bankrolling what his aides say will be the biggest public policy ad campaign ever. The website, pickensplan.com, goes live today.
Jay Rosser, Pickens' ever-present public relations man, promises that Pickens' face will be seen on Americans' televisions this fall almost as frequently as John McCain's and Barack Obama's
"Neither presidential candidate is talking about solving the oil problem. So we're going to make 'em talk about it," Pickens says.
"Nixon said in 1970 that we were importing 20% of our oil and that by 1980 it would be 0%. That didn't happen," Pickens says. "It went to 42% in 1991 with the Gulf War. It's just under 70% now. Where do you think we're going to be in 10 years when our economy is busted and we're importing 80% of our oil?"
Finding solutions to other major issues, including health care, are important, he concedes. But "If you don't solve the energy problem, it's going to break us before we even get to solving health care and some of these other important issues." And it has to be done with the same sense of urgency that President Eisenhower had when he pushed the rapid development of the interstate highway system during the Cold War.
Of course, Pickens also has a particular solution in mind.
Wind. And natural gas.
Last week, Pickens loaded up his $60 million, top-of-the-line Gulfstream G550 corporate jet with reporters and a few associates from his Dallas-based BP Capital energy hedge fund and related companies and flew here to illustrate just how big — and achievable — his vision is.

I have to wonder if, like Gore, Pickens has bought stock in the windmill companies and is in it for the buck?
While we might not be able to drill our way out of it, drilling would ease the burden while whatever is next is coming to the forefront.

Dinosoars rotting in the ground producing crude oil is a hilarious theory similar to evolution. (theory not provable).

Personally, I still believe the earth is flat. That picture of the ball they keep showing is a government conspiracy to sell their space exploration project.

I'm just a disabled, wore out old truckdriver with a 10th grade education. What I know for sure would make a thin book. I know a little bit about a lot of things. I don't consider myself an expert on anything. So I try not to make positive statements about things I'm not sure about. Sometimes I do get carried away and say something I don't posess definitive proof of. So I will apologise for saying that the THEORY of evolution is laughable. I take my belief in Creationalism from the book of genesis. For me the Bible is the end of debate. What I mean by that is if you can show me in the bible where it says Men evolved from apes you'll get no more debate from me! Otherwise I'm going to believe the bible until undeniable definative proof is found to absolutely prove Mr. Darwin's THEORY is presented in a way that removes the last shred of doubt from my mind. If it pleases you to believe the moon is swiss cheese that's Ok with me but if you demand that I believe it you are going to have to prove it with more than artist conceptions or bone fragments. As far as Billionare Pickens is concerned his opinion is backed up by a lot more success in the oil business than I can boast of! However I remain skeptical about Peak Oil and the benefits of drilling on the 98% of Alaska that is under Government Control. There are a lot of places in Alaska to drill. I agree with the conservationalists that some places are just too sensitive and too valuable to allow drilling but ANWR is not one of them. However there are a lot of places much easier and more potentially profitable to drill in Alaska. Our great country would not be what it is today had the thirteen colonies adopted the attitude that our government has toward Alaska toward the land west of the mississippi.

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst

Believe it or not, MOST people want to believe that PEAK OIL is a MYTH, because if it is real...the future will be getting a lot tougher for ALL of US...:(

Well I'm not a farmer. I've hefted a few bales of hay and hoed a few rows of peas and such. I'm a novice gardener who has pretty good luck growing Squash and turnips neither of which I particularly care for. most of the other vegetable(that I like) seem harder to grow. My son rescued a MF 85 tractor the other day from going across the scales (cause it looked good to him) So far we've Found out that it will run on ether and has antifreeze coming out of the petcock on the radiator. I t runs on LP gas and we have no way to add fuel.I stumbled across this site looking for 18.4 X 30 tires (who would have thought tractor tires would cost so much!). The local dealer wants 675.00 for tires plus mounting. I found some in kansas (What are buffed tires?) but it seems shipping is not available to Lueders. I am considering trying to mount truck tires on it by drilling new lug holes on budd wheels of which I have plenty. I am sceptical about my chances of success in that! The wheels on it are complicated with some kind of an adjustable width feature. One question I would like an answer to is Will other types of tractor wheels fit on the Eight hole lugs in the center of the wheel ? Thanks for your help and for not laughing (Aww go ahead and laugh if you want to)
