Winch Wiring?

Awhile back I asked about whether to get a winch or a motorized capstan for my wife's 05 RTV. Followed the majority of the advice, thank you, and ordered out a 3000 lb. winch from my Kubota dealer. In fact gonna go pick it up when I close this.

The question is, HOW TO WIRE IT. I understand that it comes with a wired remote and some kind of switch that mounts in the interior.

1. I have an accessory fuse block connected to the battery that I have run my lights and extra plug. Is there FACTORY wiring that will carry the load or do I run an additional circuit from my accessory fuse block that I put in?

2. Where and how do you run the actual wiring from the power source to the winch itself? I assume that this first goes to a switch and then to the winch. 8 ga wire?

3. Where do you put the inerior switch. Cut a hole in the dash?

4. Where do you stash the wired remote?

I think after you pick up the winch package and look at the instructions you'll have a lot less questions.

Kubota does a pretty good job of putting together accessories and the instructions for the install.
 
Yep (on it'll be clear once you get the winch and see the parts).
Not sure what your winch will recommend but the main power is best right off the battery.
 
The Kubota kit comes with all the wiring to go direct to the battery, you will also have wiring to go from the contactor block to the switched power source plug on the buggy. The instructions are very clear, once you get the kit you'll see how easy it is. Doesn't take anytime to put it in.:clap:
 
Oh, and two things I like to do is, use the wireless remote or wired remote whichever it comes with and not install the dash switch. Little fingers like to play and wind winches up so tight something snaps or breaks. And usually remove half of the cable, so when you do use it it doesn't bind up on the winch itself because the usual 50' is almost too much unless you get it neatly wrapped on each time. Looks good but hard to do and while you might do it at first, over time you get tired of messing with 50' of cable.
 
If you are planning on using it a lot, consider replacing the cable with Amsteel or other winch rope. The rope is incredibly strong. The Amsteel 1/4" rope is rated for over 7000 pounds.

Another thing alot of guys are doing is replacing the cable with a boat winch strap, especially if you use it to plow with. The wide contact area helps it last a bit longer, the downside is you'll only get 20-25 feet instead of 50 ft of cable.
 
Thanks for the thoughts guys.............Got it, opened up the boxes and it is just as you say, I think........I dont want to disturb how it is packed up until Susan, my wife, opens it and goes nuts........ah the simple things

I plan on using it a lot as we currently have 15 trees down due to the tornado a month or so ago.....Even many more than that if you count the widow makers and hung up stuff that is still up in the trees........We are talking mature oak and hickory trees hung up. Problably 20 or more if you count all of those........

I got the Kubota kit because I didnt want any confusion on the wiring or mounts and figured it would be pretty much plug and play. Thanks to YOU guys I see that it must be that way. I plan on replacing the wire rope with the synthetic that Warn has in their XT series of winches. Kubota sells the RT series, with the synthetic rope and a wireless remote being the major difference in the XT series........

Anyway.........thanks once again guys for the help and information. I will let you know long about the 26th or so as to how it performs and the installation........God bless....Dennis
 
OK.....Mama got the winch and is TOTALLY HAPPY.....NOW the install........A couple of questions for guys that have installed a WARN 3000 lb Kubota kit..........

1. On the Warn install instructions it talks about a "bottom tie bolt". To remove it and save it for "wench service".........The Kubota instructions say NOTHING......The only thing I see is about a 3/16 bolt that goes from the motor side to the clutch side but gives clearance for the rope by perhaps 3/8"..........Any thoughts?

2. To access the clutch disengage/engage knob on the end does one try to snake your hand through the grill.....TOTALLY HARD........or do you remove or pull the rubber flaps under the hood and above the winch aside to reach down in there?

3. Four bolts with a 13mm head to actually hold the winch to the frame?.........THAT'S ALL??????........I know they are working in the "shear" plane but for 3000lb it doesnt seem much??????

That's all I got done today with the actual wiring of the electrics tomorrow or so.....That part seems pretty straight forward......Where is your permanent switch mounted????????

i know most if not all winchs don't come with a main fuse for the battery connection if it doesn't it's worth it to go to a autoparts store and get a good 40amp or 50 amp inline fuse for the battery. i seen a few get heated up and stuck on the power out or in mode and then burn the whole atv up better to blow a fuse then to lose an atv or utv over a 500 fuse.
 
Hey Bud and thanks for the advice........I learned a LONG time ago to NEVER run any kind of accessory straight off of the battery......Instead, when I ran my lights awhile back I developed an accessory fuse panel that the winch worked out just fine hooking up to rather than straight to the battery..........

As a side note had to use the winch for the first time the other night........My SIL got stuck on an ice patch in the driveway.....lololol.....that is another story; but let's just say that when he bought that 2WD Explorer I asked him if he thought that was money well saved...........

Anyway, parked the RTV on a clear patch of driveway, spooled out the cable, put it in gear, and it just pulled it forward and slightly up hill like it was supposed to.......PAINLESS and perfect.............As a note about the wiring situation, am really glad it is wired heavy duty and fused as such because I had the headlights on and while pulling the voltage/amperage must have been tremendous as the lights turned a dullish brown/yellow...........

Anyway.........The Warn, for me worked out JUST FINE.......God bless.......Dennis
